The Outsiders Final Project: Independent Study Instead of an Independent reading project this quarter, you will be creating a project of your choosing based on The Outsiders which we read together. DUE JUNE 18th!!! FIRM DEADLINE! ● You will be allowed to create groups with other students in your own class, but I reserve the right to add/delete from them as I see fit. Groups will be limited in size to 4 students. (You may have ‘extras’ in your project, but max four students can be part of the grade). ● It is expected that all group members will do an equal portion of the work. ● Although this is a group project (if you choose it to be), each student will receive his/her own individual grade. The grade will be based on observations of your effort in class, the final product, your own evaluation of yourself, and the group’s evaluation of your effort (see grading rubrics). ● Choose your group wisely. Don’t just automatically partner up with your friends. Choose a group that will work the best for you or who plans on doing the type of project you are best suited for. Additionally, if you don’t think you can be part of a group due to scheduling issues, it might make more sense to go it alone. ● Group projects, while very fun and rewarding, require much more meeting time outside the classroom. Do not choose a group project if you cannot commit to meeting outside the class with your group members. ● Products are easier to put together than a film project because each member can do his/her part at home at his/her convenience, and it can be collated in school or on a collaborative doc/slideshow. You and your group, if you are working in one, will complete one of the following tasks. SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM TO SEE THE GRADING RUBRICS so you understand how you will be graded. Projects marked with an * require choosing two (2) of this type. If you aren’t sure, ASK ME. ● Mini Movie- Create a number of small scenes to tell the story of The Outsiders using dialogue, costumes, setting, etc. Your movie should be a minimum of two minutes long per group member (a group of 4 would produce a movie that is a minimum of 8 minutes long). SAMPLES: Sample Mini Movie 1 Sample Mini Movie 2 ● Talk Show- Create a talk show format to interview some of the characters from the book or even S.E. Hinton herself. Your talk show should be a minimum of 2 minutes long per group member. SAMPLE: Talk Show Interview: Video Sample ● *Movie Trailer- You may create a 2 minute movie trailer for the novel. It should be similar to the trailers you see before a movie. Viewers should get a basic understanding of plot, themes, setting, conflict and tone. The movie trailer can be a mini-movie with clips of a variety of scenes, utilizing voiceover to underscore thematic elements. Your trailer should be 2 minutes per group member. Movie Trailer: The Outsiders ● *Book Trailer- You may create a 2 minute book trailer. The trailer should have a number of slides and background music or some voiceover narration. The trailer should include the title and author, general plot details, setting, conflicts, and themes. Trailer should be compelling, persuasive, and unique. Trailer should use music that creates the appropriate mood, images that both literally and symbolically convey the story, text and quotes that grab the audience’s attention and pique interest. Animoto is a good program to use. Ask me and I can get you a free student account if you’re interested. Apple’s iMovie is also quite good. Check out this sample trailer ● Scrapbook/Journal/Diary- Create a digital scrapbook/journal/diary, using pictures, photographs, drawings, journal entries, letters, and anything else that could conceivably go into one of the aforementioned formats. The scrapbook/journal/diary should give the reader a basic understanding of what happens in the book. Google Slides will work here as will Prezi. This is a good solo project but if multiple people do it, 4 slides per person. Check out this Sample scrapbook made using Prezi. ● Comic Book/ Graphic Novel- Create a digital comic book or graphic novel to retell the story. The reader should be able to understand the basic plot of The Outsiders just by reading the comic. ToonDoo is a cool website to pretty easily create a comic book. Each student in a group would be responsible for producing 4 pages of a comic. SAMPLE: The Outsiders Graphic Novel Comic Strip ● Newspaper Create a digital newspaper with articles, interviews, advertisements (for something from to your book), editorials, pictures, etc. Please try to make it as authentic as possible (Here is a sample newspaper article and here is how to structure a news article). Base it on the papers you are familiar with, e.g. Newsday, New York Times, etc. Try these free newspaper templates for Google Docs, or try Google Slides, Microsoft Publisher, Flipsnack, or these templates. or these Docs templates. Your paper should be two or more pages of articles or 2 pages per group member. You can also use Google Sites to create a website version of your newspaper (2 pages per member). Each article should be 250-300 words. ● *Soundtrack- Create a soundtrack for the book by selecting at least 12 songs and writing about why each song was chosen and how it relates to the book in a well developed paragraph detailing links between song and lyrics and the content tone of the book. Make the connection clear. You may use Google Slides for this. Feel free to add links to the songs as well. If you are musically inclined, you can create a score for the movie or original songs for a soundtrack (minimum of five songs). Soundtrack: The Outsiders here is another one Song 1 - Song 2 - Song 3 - Song 4 - Song 5 If you write your own songs, you don’t have to do a second *asterisk project. If you use someone else’s songs, you do. ● *Prezi- create a Prezi presentation using the presentation offered on their website. It should provide the viewer a thorough investigation of the novel and the viewer should leave with a pretty good understanding of the characters, the author, the setting, the conflicts, the plot. Prezi Book Report/Presentation ● Website- create a website using Google Sites that provides a thorough investigation of the novel. Someone looking at your website should come away with a good understanding of the basic plot, the author, the setting, conflicts, etc. You can use video, pictures, etc. in addition to text and links. You should have 4 web pages (or subpages) per group member. Below you will find the rubrics for this assignment. This is your final grade for the quarter and will count as your final project grade.
