A physical barrier that protects the underlying tissues and organs from microorganisms, physical trauma, ultraviolet radiation, and dehydration. Plays a vital role in temperature maintenance, fluid and electrolyte balance, absorption, excretion, sensation, immunity, and vitamin D synthesis. The skin also provides an individual identity to a person’s appearance. The skin is thicker on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet and is continuous with the mucous membranes at the orifices of the body.
