Introduction: Dance is an expression of the soul. It is not just a showcase of talent but a manifestation of skill and discipline. A dance performance isn’t only meant to amuse the spectators, it also transcends the ability of the dancers to make connections with the audience through the movement concepts. How you move as you dance shows your body coordination, your flexibility and gracefulness. You dance not just for the sake of dancing but to perform as spectacular and as seamless as you can. This is where movement concepts come into play: Body, Space, Effort, and Relationships. These are the concepts that one should consider in critiquing the movements of a dance performance. Reaction: BODY Movement is essential to a dance and to be able to move gracefully, one should utilize his or her body in the most efficient way possible. As for Michael and Charity’s performance, they surely know how to utilize their body well as they perform. Michael’s body strength is showcased during the lifting. Charity’s flexibility is highlighted as she stretched her body during their performance. The lifts, the twirls, the bends, the twists, the stretches, the curls, the gallops, the skips, and the jumps, everything is on point. Both dancers complimented each other’s body movement gracefully. It was a well-coordinated performance where the non-locomotor, locomotor, and manipulative skill actions were presented seamlessly. SPACE Space or space awareness is also an important movement concept in a dance performance. Space awareness is where the body moves. Both dancers exhibit awareness of self-space and general space. As they perform individually and as a duo, they were both able to utilized the space to their advantage. They perform as if the dance studio doesn’t seem too small or too wide, but just the perfect fit for the two of them. They move with ease as they extend their body to the different directions, such as up and down, left and right. It was a seamless transition of movements. EFFORT Effort is how the body moves. It is divided into three sub-concepts: time, force, and flow. As Michael Dameski and Charity Anderson dance in the beat of the song “Falling Like the Stars”, they were able to dance in sync with the tempo of the song. It was a contemporary dance with a slow romantic beat. They performed with sustained movements characterized by even flow of energy resulting in motion that is ongoing and smooth. The dance performance is light and free. RELATIONSHIP Relationship in movement concepts has focus on with whom or with what the body is relating as it moves. With regards to their performance, both dancers were able to manifest efficient relationship with their body parts through coordinated movements. With the extension of their hands, bending of their backs, and pointing of their toes, they were able to portray excellent body coordination. As for the relationship with people, the pair have an excellent chemistry. Their movement is symmetrical and mirrors each other in a fascinating way. The pair was well-coordinated and their movement oozes with passion and power. The amount of trust they have for each other is also evident during their performance especially during the lifting and twirling movements. Conclusion: In conclusion, both dancers Michael Dameski and Charity Anderson were great performers who wonderfully manifested the four movement concepts: body, space, effort, and relationship. It was a powerful performance from the dynamic duo that compliments each other very well. They don’t just dance for the sake of dancing, but they dance to express their emotions and showcase their skills. The way they dance resembles art; every movement they made creates a perfect stroke like those of the painter’s brush. They were able to expertly utilize their body, maximizing the space well with their graceful and free movements and with their undeniable chemistry shared in a passionate dance. Over-all, it was a superb performance.
