Content: The Nature and Function of Social Sciences II. Background Information of the Lesson: Social Science is a generic term covering the scientific study of man. It is a discipline or branch of science that deals with the socio-cultural aspects of human behavior. The social sciences generally include cultural anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, criminology, and social psychology. At a minimum it would appear that to be “scientific” entails a systematic and disciplined method of acquiring knowledge, and that knowledge must be verifiable knowledge. To understand the difference between participant observation and survey is to realize that these research methods have different purposes. A survey is usually used to study the habits of people in a target group. In market research, surveys allow you to communicate with group members to understand their buying habits and purchasing power. Unlike participant observation methods, surveys do not require you to take part in the daily lives of your audience. Also, they usually require one-time communication. The goal of a survey is to identify each participant's wants within a group. The goal of participant observation is to record what you see and hear during people’s daily lives. Participant observation data can include photos and sketches, recordings of people speaking, videos of people performing tasks, transcriptions, visual aids such as maps, and records of the observers' thoughts and emotions during the research. Survey data are generally in the form of questionnaires or structured interviews. Surveys are usually carefully developed to include a set of specific questions and instructions. Social Science and Social Studies are not only related generically. They also share common body of content. Both are related to society and have same aims and objectives. Both emphasis on inculcating good qualities like truthfulness, sincerity, etc. of human being. Both helps to understand the various aspects of the society and utilize them. Both are must be accurate and reliable- only then can be useful. Social Studies and Social Science: focus and emphasis of both are different - When a student studies geography as a social science, he has to focus his attention on the methods of geography, tools and concepts, etc. While studying geography as a social study, he should focus attention on using ideas and concepts from geography, to understand man, how his efforts to control his environment have led to a better life, how various geographical factors influence his life, etc. III.
