THE PRINCE&THE PAUPER MARK TWAIN Presented by: Sophie Ch O I N T A O T U N T E L S I N E E R P PLOT OF STORY CHARACTERS MAIN IDEA OF AUTHOR MY OWN OPINION PLOT OF THE STORY IT WAS FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1881 IN CANADA, BEFORE ITS 1882 PUBLICATION IN THE UNITED STATES. THE NOVEL REPRESENTS TWAIN'S FIRST ATTEMPT AT HISTORICAL FICTION. INTRODUCTION Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who were born on the same day and are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive, alcoholic father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Edward VI of England, son of Henry VIII of England. CHARACTERS PROTAGONIST Tom Canty/Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales (King Henry VIII’s only son.) One of the protagonists. Tom was born the same day as Edward Tudor but to a very different lot in life— Tom is a beggar and he is abused by his father, John Canty, and grandmother, Grammer Canty. ANTAGONIST John Canty John Canty is just pure evil, so he's totally the antagonist. He makes life hard for Tom as a child by beating him when he doesn't bring home enough money. Then he makes life hard for Prince Edward by constantly attempting to kidnap him. OTHER CHARACTERS Father Andrew -The priest who teaches Tom Canty to read and write which was quite the achievement for a member of the lower classes in Tudor England Father Andrew is a kind man and he takes pity on Tom. Miles Hendon- Edward Tudor’s friend and protector. Miles is Sir Richard Hendon’s middle son. When Miles discovers Edward, lost and confused in London, he swoops in and offers Edward his protection. Edward tells Miles that he’s the prince, but Miles writes this off as symptoms of mental illness. THE MAIN IDEA OF AUTHOR In Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper there is a clear disconnect between the extremely wealthy and the extremely poor. From wealthy people's lofty positions in fine estates far away from the dirt, noise, and misery in London's slums, they place no real value on the lives of the poor. DETAILED ANALYSIS WHAT IS THE MAIN CONFLICT IN THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER? CONFLICT The novel's main conflict can be found in the fact that the Prince and Tom Canty's identities have been confused. Tom is mistaken for the prince, and the prince has been mistaken for Tom. Over the course of the novel, the boys must find their way back to the lives in which they belong..... learning a lot along the way. MORAL LESSONS LESSON #1 there are always things in life that we will be discontent with but that there are also advantages and things taken for granted in any position in society LESSON #2 that people's merit is not reflected by their class. In some societies, there is a view that the lower one's class, the less one's value as a person. However, Twain presents characters of every class by demonstrating kindness and generosity, such as Tom and Miles Hendon, MY OWN OPINION Some moral lessons that could be taken away from The Prince and the Pauper are the basic premise that "the grass is always greener on the other side" and that a person's moral character is not reflected by their class. this story also shows how people judge other people by only his/her appearance. the story teaches to be grateful with what you are. Tom at first was dreaming to be a prince, but after becoming a ‘fake’ prince, he felt was too hard to live in the palace. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! Don't hesitate to ask any questions!
