Sections of a Newspaper
1. General News – contains the most important news both local and abroad. It is
usually found on the front page of the newspaper. The title of the most important
news is printed in big bold letters. It is called the banner.
2. The Cover Page – this is where you will find more details about the cover story.
3. Weather – you can find the weather forecast in the different regions or country.
4. Table of Contents – this is the most important part of a newspaper. This part of
a newspaper shows where to find all of these newspaper sections. Without it,
reading the newspaper would take hours to read.
5. Editorial Page – printed in this section are articles called editorials. An editorial
gives views or opinions of the editor or publisher or certain issues or events.
6. Business and Finance Section – is for things that are happening business-wise.
For example, the business section might contain media and advertising, world
business, the economy of the country that you live in, the stock markets, company
researches, mutual funds, and stock portfolios, imports and exports, and prices
of prime commodities.
7. International News Section – tells you about news in different continents, such
as Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
8. Local News Section – part of this page contains news from towns and cities of
the nation. Another part contains news from abroad.
9. Technology – contains things that are going in and out of style in the technology
world, things that are coming out, and things that have been out, but they’re
coming back in style.
10. Science – contains things that are happening in our medical world today. For
example: a science section in a newspaper might contain things that are happening in
and around our environment.
11. Health – usually contain the things that are happening to a modern day person’s
health. For example: they might have come out with a new medicine that could clear
the human race totally of allergies. In a health section, there might be news containing
things about fitness and nutrition, new health care policies, and mental health
behavior.
12. Sports – where you may find out last night’s baseball, basketball, and football
game. It may also tell you about a player and other well–known sports personalities.
13. Education – you might be able to find out the overall average for students in a
particular school, and maybe even a couple of awards that a student won for the school
that they attend, or doing something that would help their school do better.
14. Classified Ads Section – falls under headings like “help wanted”, “for lease or
sale”, “wanted to buy”. Also found in this section are personal and legal notices.
15. Entertainment Section – contains information about movies, radio, television,
and other activities for entertainment. It includes games, puzzles, comic strips, and
cartoons, and the daily horoscope.
16. Society Page – contains news about important or well–known people who are
celebrating special occasions or performance at a particular place.
17. Home and Culture Section – where you may read ideas about budgeting, food
preparation, house improvement, proper plant care, and the like in this section.
18. Travel and Tourism Section – provides a guide to enjoyable travel. It directs
tourists to scenic vacation and gives information on the activities that may be had in
these places. Also found in the section are the schedules of the departure and arrival
of ships and airplanes in and out of the country.
19. Religious News – provides news on the activities of the different religious sects
such as fellowships, seminaries, prayer meeting, bible studies, and the likes.
20. Obituaries – in an obituary, you can find out about people who passed on
recently, and people think that their death should be mentioned to the community.
When you would go to this section in a newspaper, you can most likely find a picture
about someone and a short biography.
