Background/ Rationale
. Aurora National Science High School
(ANSHS), one of the top performing public
secondary schools in the province, offered Campus
Journalism as an elective subject for third year and
fourth year students from School Year 2010-2011
to School Year 2014-2015. For five years, the
subject gave opportunity for students to develop
strategies and knowledge to: identify and report
news-making events,
incorporate
journalistic
forms, techniques, and knowledge while editing
own copy, assess writing for fact and opinion, and
analyze the role and responsibility of a free press in
a democracy as well as legal and ethical aspects of
journalism and other essential skills in journalism.
While completing the course, students were given
the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in the
following areas: interviewing/factual researching,
interpersonal
features
communication,
writing, legal/ethical
news
writing,
media issues,
editorial writing, sports writing, photography
principles and/or practice, knowledge of current
events, and advertising theory and practice.
Due to the changes brought by the
implementation of the K to 12 curriculum, ANSHS
has to give up offering Campus Journalism as an
elective subject to give way for other elective
subjects that would prepare the students for senior
high school since ANSHS will only be offering
STEM (Science and Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) strand.
This matter became a primary concern of
the school paper adviser since this would affect the
development of the journalistic skills of the
students .The fact that The Nucleus, the school’s
official publication has to maintain its journalism
crown not only in the Division Press Conference
but also in the regional, even in the national levels
in various categories of journalism is one of the
main reasons why the English teacher, being the
school paper adviser, has decided to include topics
on basic campus journalism in the English 7
subject.
The English teacher made an enhancement
material that aims to develop both the students’
grammar skills and skills in journalism. The
enhancement material includes additional activities
that would further enhance students’ skills in
grammar lessons such as subject-verb agreement,
pronoun-antecedent
agreement,
verb
tense
consistency, etc. which are also based on the
English 7 K to 12 Learning Materials. One of the
special features of the enhancement material is the
inclusion of activities that would help develop
students’ journalistic skills. The English teacher
will discuss a particular topic on campus
journalism that is related to the lesson in English 7
curriculum. At the end of each module, the students
are expected to write articles such as news, feature,
editorial, etc. as primary evidence of their learning.
