1 ESSENTAIL TECHNIQUES IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY ASSIGNMENT # 1 MSDS (MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET) Name: Saad bin Habib (FA19-BSO-064) Semester VI (Bioscience) Instructor: Sir Afraz Ahmad Date of submission: 23rd February 2022 2 What is MSDS? A MSDS or SDS document is a standardized data sheet which contains occupational safety and health data regarding a chemical. The manufacturers of such chemicals are mandated by the International Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to provide a proper SDS to the chemical handlers, for its safe application. It provides the user with the information about the safe use, emergency and first aid procedure about the certain chemical. This type of information is usually like the chemical properties (flammability, cohesiveness), health and environmental hazards (irritant, toxic) of the chemical. [1] Hazardous Pictogram: These are symbols used to alert and inform about the potential hazardous effect of a chemical or its products, to people or environment. These pictograms are represented in a shape of a diamond, with red borders and white background. One or more of these can be found on the packaging or label of chemicals. [2,3] Represents corrosive effect on skin and other surfaces. Must not be directly touched. Shown by a symbol representing corrosion. Represents hazardous effect to the environment. Such chemicals must not be disposed directly into the environment. Represents potential Explosive properties of chemicals. Must avoid shacking, mixing, heating or dispersing the chemical. Represents flammable in liquid, gas or solid state. Shown by a symbol of a flame. Must not be kept away from fire source. 3 Chemically oxidizing in nature. These are potential firehazards, and must be kept away from fire and oxygen source. Represents compressed gases, mixture of gases, dissolved or liquified gases present under pressure. Represent acute Toxic nature of chemical. Shown by skull and bone. Must not be tasted or applied on skin. Can cause chronic health effects. Unlike acute toxic, these develop slowly over time and deteriorate health. Examples of Chemicals: 1. Diethyl ether ≥99.7% stabilised, AnalaR NORMAPUR® ACS, Reag. Ph. Eur. analytical reagent: Table:[4] PROPERTY VALUE Boiling point: 35 Celsius Melting point: -123 Celsius Flammability: Extremely flammable in liquid and vapour Coerciveness: Non-corrosive to skin Explosive property Not Applicable Colour: Colourless Carcinogenic: No Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature 4 Hazards:[4] Category 1, flammable liquid. Category 4, Acute oral toxicity. Extremely flammable liquid and vapour. Harmful if swallowed. May cause drowsiness or dizziness, and may form explosive peroxides. Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. No evidence for being carcinogenic. 2. Potassium iodide: Table:[5] PROPERTY VALUE Boiling point: 1.33 Celsius Melting point: 680 Celsius Flammability: Non-flammable Coerciveness: Yes Colour: Off-white Vapour pressure: ca.1 hPa at 745 °C Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature Hazards: [5] The substance can cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure if swallowed. Potential carcinogenic at high doses. The substance/mixture is however, not considered very persistent, bio accumulative or toxic at level of 0.1% or higher. 5 3. Methylene blue (C.I.52015) (manufacturer: Merck): Table:[6] PROPERTY VALUE Boiling point: - Melting point: 180 Celsius Flammability: flammable in liquid and vapour Coerciveness: Non-corrosive Volatility: Non-volatile Colour: Dark blue Vapour pressure: - Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature Hazards: [6] The substance is harmful if swallowed. Don`t eat or drink. Don`t let products enter drains. Thoroughly wash hands and apparatus after use. Potential carcinogenic. 4. N, N'-Methylenebisacrylamide: Table:[7] PROPERTY VALUE Boiling point: 333.8 Celsius 6 Melting point: 173.7 – 185.9 Celsius Flammability: Non-flammable, but can cause explosion in dust form Coerciveness: - Volatility: - Colour: White Vapour pressure: < 0,01 hPa Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature Hazards: [7] The substance is toxic if swallowed. It may cause genetic defects. Proper storage necessary. Thoroughly wash skin after use. 5. Phenolphthalein: Table:[8] PROPERTY VALUE Boiling point: 82 Celsius Melting point: -88 Celsius Flammability: Flammability Coerciveness: - Volatility: - Colour: Colourless 7 Vapour pressure: 40mmHg Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature Hazards: [8] Carcinogenicity Category 2, suspected of causing cancer. Combustible in dust form, hazard not contributing to classification. 6. Calcium Chloride (Dihydrate) Extra Pure: Table:[9] PROPERTY VALUE Boiling point: Equal to or greater than 1600 Melting point: 176 Celsius Flammability: Non-flammable Coerciveness: Non coerciveness Volatility: - Colour: White powder Vapour pressure: 0.01 hPa at 20 °C Chemical stability: Stable at room temperature Hazards:[9] Can causes serious eye irritation. In which case, rinse with water and expose to fresh air. 8 References: 1.
