Needs •Needs are general wants or desires. For examples: 1.Water 2.Food 3.Shelter •Every human being has to strive for the satisfaction of his basic needs if he is to maintain andactualize or enhance himself in the world. Categories of needs:1: Biological needs 2: Socio-psychological needs Biological needs “Biological needs are that which the body needs to survive such as sleep ,food and shelter.” FIRST CATEGORY All our bodily or organic needs fall into this category. In this category , Fundamental needs for the survival are water oxygen food. second category In the second category of our survival and existence are as Need for rest when tired. Need for being active when rested. Need for sleep when deprived of it for long. Need for the elimination of waste. Need for protection from natural disasters. Need for internal temperature. third category In the third category, we can place the need of satisfaction of sex urge or desire to seek sex experience. Although it is not the need of an individual . But it is the strongest urge in the Satisfaction which lies his proper growth, development ,adjustment and well being. fourth category In the last category, We have needs that are associated with the demands of our senses. The sensory needs include the need for physical contact, sensory stimulation and stimulus variability and manipulation. Although we may not die without them but it required for general welfare and optimal growth SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS NEEDS:NEEDS ARE BASICALLY PSYCHOLOGICAL FEATURES SOCIO-PHYSHOLOGICAL NEEDS:"Socio-psychological needs are human needs for selfdetermination, competence, relatedness and meaning" These needs connected to our social-cultural envoirnment These needs are not connected with the survival of organism The deprivation of these needs seriously affect mental health and welfare of organisms such as, agression,group behaviour etc. CLASSIFICATION:It is classified as follows Need for freedom or gaining independence Need for security Need for love or affection Need to achieve Need for recognition or social approvals Need for social company Need for self-assertion Need for self-actualisation 1: The need of freedom:- Every individual posses a craving for independence. In general, the more time you spent doing what you want, where you want, when you want and with who you want, the better your freedom need is. 2: the need for security:"Security is basically a sense of safety , confidence and freedom from apprehensions." Everyone of us needs to feel secure. It belongs to our both personal and social life. According to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs (1970):"The need of security is one of the most essential human need." 3: The need for love or affection:"Love is intimacy, passion, motivation." It is combination of mental,emotional and physical behavior. Everyone of us irrespective of age,color,cast has a strong desire to love or to be loved. 4: the need to achieve:According to psychology , "Achievement means the attainments of sone goal." Every human being wants to achieve something in their life. It is important as people with strong sense of purpose, perform better at work. 5: THE NEED FOR RECOGNITION AND SOCIAL APPROVAL:"Social approval is the acceptance of someone or something by society." Each one of us has an inheritance desire for gaining recognition, appreciation at the hands of others. 6: THE NEED FOR SOCIAL COMPANY:Man is referred as a social animal that urges to maintain social relations. It is very essential for the growth and development of brain. It promotes a sense of safety. The person facing social rejection suffers a bad mental health. 7: THE NEED FOR SELF ASSERTION:"The act of dominating oneself over other is called as self-assertion." Everyone of us has an desire to get an to dominate others. It is useful as it helps to express yourself effectively. It boost your self-esteem. 8: THE NEED FOR SELF-ACTUALISATION:"Self-actualization refers to the realization of a person's potential. " It is very important because with realizing it you are not able to achieve anything. A drive such as hunger or thirst motivates the organism to act in ways that will reduce the tension. Example (1) When you become hungry (tension caused by the need for food) you are motivated to eat (method of reducing the tension). Example (2) When we are cold we put on a sweater to adress our need warmth and maintain our body temperature categories of drive Drives of any nature are divided into two categories. 1.
