This unit applies to workers in a range of community services and health contexts who
provide leisure and health services. It describes the skills and knowledge required to work in
a context within which leisure and health work occurs and to effectively support its role in
enhancing wellbeing.

This document is Assessment 1 of the two assessments you are required to complete,
together with structured workplace learning, for CHCLAH001 Work effectively in the
leisure and health industries.
This assessment is designed to gather evidence of competence, specifically to:

1. Identify at least two myths about the value of leisure and recreation in enhancing health
and wellbeing. Identify the facts that dispel your recognised myths. Please provide the

a. Older people cannot participate in physical activities.

The extra benefits include a reduced occurrence of chronic
conditions, (Module 1 topic1.1) improvement of mental health, a
decrease in cognitive decline and a reduction of mortality rates.

The emotional strength and skills that are created in childhood are

Leisure activities can create positive lifestyle choices for young people.

Having a variety of leisure activities has shown to increase positive
general self-worth and social self-concept.(Module 1.1.1) Studies have
also shown a link between academic achievement and increase in

Australians are moving away from traditional British roots, towards a
more Americanised sports like Basketball. Australia has developed a
cultural hybrid. American sports are popular, there is still an audience
for cricket but local sports like Australian Rules continue to thrive.

The lack of spectators due to Covid restrictions may have affected the
performance of sports people, therefore the younger audience did not

In 2020 Paralympians were acknowledged by the Australian Government as
being as valued as their able-bodied counterparts. The federal government
committed to providing financial support to groups. This has
encouraged enrolment by disabled people to try for an Olympic dream.
