Pocketbook of Peace
A 30 Day Companion
Kia Scherr
Introduction
The peaceful life I was living ended on
November 26, 2008 when my husband, Alan
and 13 year old daughter, Naomi, were shot
and killed by terrorists at the Oberoi Hotel in
Mumbai, India along with 158 other people.
is now known in India as 26/11. When peace is
to restore balance. Love was brutally lacking
in the terrorist attack and so for me, the way to
restore balance is to deepen my commitment
to love unconditionally. What does that mean
in everyday life? That is what this little book is
about – to put 30 positive behaviors into practice
that will lay a pathway to peace and open the
doors of the heart by increasing trust through
living with integrity, day by day, step by step, we
can each make a difference.
How can a person be capable of the coldblooded killing of innocent people? There may
deep down, there must be a huge disconnect
to self and the rest of humanity. When we feel
connected to other human beings, we would
way to work things out because we are all a
connected whole. It has been said that there
are no half-hearted terrorists and so we must
be wholehearted in bringing more focus to
respecting the dignity of life in ourselves and in
everyone we meet. When we take a pledge, we
set the stage for that intention to come to life.
By taking a pledge to bring peace into the world,
and then putting it into practice every day in 30
different ways, we become the peace we wish
to experience and naturally bring this peace into
every interaction.
I invite you to join me in this grand opportunity to
raise your personal peace quotient and likewise
the peace quotient in your daily life.
In this process, may you deepen your
connection to the core of life within yourself
and connect more fully with others as you
experience greater peace, compassion and love
in your everyday life.

How to use this book
focus for 30 consecutive days by which positive
behaviors are interwoven into everyday
encounters. Each day has a quote to inspire
and guide your focus. Once you are clear on
the focus, “statements of intention” are provided
to clarify and ground your experience. You
can read these statements aloud or quietly
to yourself or write them out to post by your
computer or put on your refrigerator.
The next section provides questions for
Each day’s focus is a building block that leads
to living with peace, compassion and love in
simple harmonious ways that integrate into your
daily life with ease.
You can also sift through the pages and
randomly pick a focus to assist you with a
particular challenge you are currently having in
your life. Every time you repeat these practices
you will enrich your experience in ways that will
surprise you with greater insight and revelation.
Today and every day,
I will bring peace
to this world by
respecting the dignity
of life in myself and
in everyone I meet.
Day 1 ~ Slow Down
“Slow down and everything you are chasing will
come around and catch you.”
~John De Paola
~Statements of Intention~
Today I am willing to relax and let go.
I am enjoying a slower pace in my thoughts,
words and actions.
Everything is unfolding perfectly in its own time.
As I slow down, I am respecting the dignity of
life in myself and in everyone I meet.
As I slow down, I notice the interconnectedness
of life.
I am so grateful for the experience of slowing
down that is happening in this moment.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
Increase respect by slowing down. How can we
respect the dignity of anything unless we slow
down and pay attention? Slowing down and taking
the time to pay attention is respecting the life we
all share. With respect comes the possibility of
peace.
Reminders – How many times can you slow
down today? What are all the ways you can
remind yourself?
Challenges – What are your challenges in
regard to slowing down?
Insights – What did you learn about yourself
by slowing down?
Day 2 ~ Smile
“Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It
might be the only sunshine he sees all day.”
~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by
H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
~Statements of Intention~
Today I am smiling just to smile and to smile at
everyone I meet.
I am smiling with understanding, love and
compassion.
I am smiling with appreciation and gratitude.
I am open to the smiles of everyone in my world
today. I enjoy smiling for no reason.
Smiling opens my heart to the experience of joy
in each moment. Smile... smile... smile.
I am respecting the dignity of life in myself and
others with each smile.
I am so grateful for the smile I am experiencing
in this moment.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
Respect the dignity of life in yourself and
others today by smiling more often, especially
for no reason. Smile with compassion, with
understanding, with appreciation, gratitude and
love. In this way, you will contribute peace.
Reminders – What are all the ways to remind
yourself to smile?
Challenges – What were your challenges in
regard to smiling more often?

by smiling more often?
Day 3 ~ Breathe Deeply
“Sometimes the most important thing in a whole
day is the rest we take between two deep breaths.”
~Etty Hillesum
~Statements of Intention~
Today I am breathing deeply, taking a long deep
breath every hour of the day and letting go of all
discord.
This very breath is life. I am so grateful and
respectful of the breath that sustains my life.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
of every human being. By breathing deeply,
we deepen appreciation for the breath of life in
ourselves and others. Breathing deeply increases
the power of peace within.
Reminders – What are all the ways you can
remind yourself to breathe deeply today?

regard to breathing deeply?
Insights – What did you learn about yourself
by breathing more deeply?
Day 4 ~ Acceptance
“Accept your humanness as well as your divinity,
totally and without reserve.”
~Bernard Avishai
~Statements of Intention~
Today I am focused on being more accepting.
I accept myself as I am.
I accept everyone I meet as they are.
I accept myself as a worthy human being.
I accept my humanity with all its imperfections.
I respect the dignity of life by accepting what is,
both in myself and in everyone I meet.
I am so grateful for accepting the experience of
life that is happening in this moment.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
Respect the dignity of life by accepting yourself
as you are and accepting all others as they are.
In this way remain connected to yourself as a
worthy human being. Accepting others as they are
opens the door to harmony and peace, rather than
and requirements. Accepting life as it shows up in
each moment brings the power of peace.
Reminders – How will you remind yourself to
be accepting of life as it shows up in your world?
Challenges – What did you not want to accept
and why?
Insights – Did being more accepting change
anything in your experience today? Share an
example.
Day 5 ~ Listening
“So when you are listening to somebody,
completely, attentively, then you are listening not
only to the words, but also to the feeling of what is
being conveyed, to the whole of it, not part of it.”
~Jiddu Krishnamurti
~Statements of Intention~
Today I am focused on listening more deeply
in every encounter. I am listening to the quiet
pulsation of life within myself.
I am willing to listen with respect to everyone I
meet.
I honor the dignity of life by listening fully and
completely with acceptance and gratitude.
I am grateful for the experience of listening that
is happening in this moment.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
Respect the dignity of life in yourself and others
by listening - beginning with yourself. Continue
to slow down, breathe deeply as you listen to your
body, mind, emotions and spirit. If you can take
the time to listen to yourself, you can listen to
others more fully. One of the greatest gifts you can
give to another is to listen fully and completely.
Peace will then be possible in any moment.
Reminders – How will you honor your
commitment to listen?
Challenges – When did you
Insights – Did listening bring any new
understanding today? Give an example.
Day 6 ~ Speaking the truth
“Truth is such a rare thing, it is delightful to tell it.”
~Emily Dickinson
~Statements of Intention~
Today I will bring focus to speaking the truth in
every conversation. Truth is integrity.
I use my words to express the truth of who I am
and what life is.
As I am truthful I am respecting myself.
As I speak the truth I respect those in my world.
I speak the truth with love and compassion.
I am so grateful for the experience of speaking
the truth.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
Respect the dignity of life in yourself and others
by speaking the truth. This is living with integrity,
appropriate. We are most truthful when we speak
from the heart. When we speak from the heart we
bring the power of peace to our world.

the heel that has crushed it.”

myself and others.
In this way, I will give forth of myself with more
love and compassion with no conditions. I am
willing to forgive all that I have experienced as
hurtful.
I am willing to let go of the past so that I can
create a fresh start.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
Can you consider opening to the possibility of
bringing peace to yourself and others by being
forgiving? As you forgive, you open the doors to
healing and peace. Forgiveness allows the heart
remain contracted. We can choose to be loving
and, therefore, contribute love to our world.
Forgiveness liberates us from holding on to the
past and allows us to respect the human being
underneath the hurtful behavior.
Reminders – Whom do you most need to
forgive? Can you include yourself ? Is there
anyone to whom you need to apologize and ask
forgiveness?

to forgive? Can you do it anyway?

that clutter up my thinking and emotions.
In this way I respect the dignity of life in myself
and others.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day
with love and gratitude.
We bring peace to our lives by simplifying. It is
often said that “less is more” – less talking, less
running around, less clutter (both inner and
outer). When life is less complicated, we are
more balanced and peaceful.
Reminders – There are so many ways to
simplify – where will you begin? Name 3 ways
to simplify.
Challenges – Where is your life most complicated? Where do you need to simplify the
most?

we are having fun, we are smiling, laughing and
feeling more alive. This is the power of peace.

create the experience of having fun in your normal routine?
Challenges – When did you take yourself too
seriously?

the day, did you experience more fun? Give
some examples.

~Statements of Intention~
Today I am honoring my agreements.
As I honor my agreements, I create balance
within myself.

harmony with my world.
As I honor my agreements, I live with integrity
and truth.
I am being truthful to myself and others.
I will carry this focus with me throughout the day

by honoring all agreements. It is disrespectful of
both yourself and others when you don’t honor an

we stay balanced and create balance in our world,
and thus, peace prevails.

dignity of life by sharing, both with yourself and
with others. There is much to share in both the
inner and outer aspects of life and many ways in
which to share. We can share what we have, what we
know, but most of all we can share from the heart.
Sharing in this way brings peace to our world.

Day 28 ~ Peace
“There is no way to peace, peace is the way.”
~A.J. Muste
~Statements of Intention~
Today I open to increasing my experience of peace.
I am creating peace in each moment in my
thoughts, words and actions. Peace is the
outcome of balanced being.
Peace is living in harmony with myself and all in
my world.
I am living peace in each moment. Peace is my
state of being.

yourself and sharing peace with others. We cannot

allowing, accepting, completions and anything else
that inspires you to let go and simply be at peace.
