1. CINEMA
- birth of PH cinema is attributed -> establishment of
Malayan Films owned by Jose Nepomuceno, the Father
of Cinema (1917)
- 1950s- GOLDEN AGE OF PH CINEMA a lot of filming
techniques were invented and employed
- DALAGANG BUKID (1918)- first Filipino film
- GENGHIS KHAN (Manuel Conde) – First Asian film in
Venice and Cannes
- we were the first asian country that was recognized by
the cannes
- 1960s – decline in the Philippine cinema – nakigaya sa
trend of Western movies
- mismanagement in different film entertainment
1970s
- Second golden age
- LVN STUIDOS, PREMIERE PRODUCTIONS, LEBRAN
SAMPAGUITA – big four of film industries
- they had sign some biggest artists in
media (Gloria Romero, FPJ, Dolphy, etc)
- counterpart of cinema one (1990s), viva
(1980s), regal films (1960s)
- Martial Law – Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal (famous
film directors at that time)
– represent current situation of the
country (Walang Himala, etc)
- after EDSA, cinema became freer
- though other critics think that 1970s films are not very
good because there is censorship
2. TELEVISION
ABS-CBN
- oldest network in the Philippines
- founded in 1966 -> American Electronics Engineer
James Lindenberg as “Bolinaoelectronics Corporation
(BEC). (Bolinao because he lives in Bolinao, Pangasinan)
- started as a radio network
- 1952 -> BEC was renamed to Alto Broadcasting System
(ABS) after Judge Antonio Quirino, brother of former
president Quirino purchased the company
- the company that was merged with ABS was founded
in 1956 and was named “Chronicle Broadcasting
Network (CBN) by newspaper magul Eugenio Lopez and
his brother Fernando Lopez
GMA NETWORK
- Lareto F. de Hemendes Inc thru DZBB and started
broadcasting March 1, 1950
- Robert Stewart started the RBS TV Channel 7 in the
1960s
- due to our law that there should be no foreign equity,
Robert was forced to give up his shares on to the
triumvirate composed of Gilberto Duavit Sr., Menandro
Jimenez and Felipe Gozon
- the station changed its name to GMA 7 RadioTelevision Arts
