A book like that is known as anthology. ◦ Etymology: Derive from Greek word “anthos” (meaning Flower), “legein” or "logia” (meaning to gather or collect) ◦ Anthology : According to Collins dictionary it is a collection of writings by different writers published together in one book. The purpose of an Anthology is to provide the potential reader with easy access to a wide range of literary works on a given theme. For example, Anthology of poetry from 18th-century England . -Through anthology it is possible to unify remarkable works of art or the most relevant particular production. - Editors of anthologies are in charge of determining which work will be included in compiling the entire volume. Sometimes they publish their own work next to those authors who contribute to the anthology. - Anthologies provide the chance to experience works from unfamiliar genres, eras and culture. What is the purpose of Anthology? ◦ Allows the reader or the public to easily understand and compare one work with another ◦ It is an instrument for teaching and learning, an excellent tool to transmit diverse subject. ◦ In academic field, it follows logical order that helps the student to understand the subject in a clear and progressive way. ◦ Give the reader a new and exciting experience by exploring different stories that are all closely related by one subject or theme . Additional Information Anthology derives from Greek word Anthologia and it was converted into English during the 17th century. Have been used for centuries to compile the best works within a literary genre for popular consumption. - It is usually contains excerpt or selection rather than the full works. The idea would be that if any particular work catches the readers attention, then she\ he can pursue the avenue further. - In some cases, anthologies are compiled by a publishers around a certain theme, such as short stories or poems from a particular genre, culture, nation, or time period. o TYPES OF ANTHOLOGY: Literary Anthology it is the most common , in poetry and is also used in essay, fables and etc. -Musical Anthology- collection of musical works -Theoretical Anthologies – it belongs to academic world.
