PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
-Blocks the activity of cyclooxygenase, the enzyme needed
for prostaglandin in synthesis.
- Aspirin inhibits platelets aggregation by interfering with
productionof thromboxan, A2 a substance that stimulates
platelet aggregation. (2020 Nurses Drug Handbook, 2020)
Therapeutic Use
-Inhibition of platelets aggregation, which protects aganist ischemic
stroke and myocardial infarction.
_Inflammation suppresion

Patient is prescribed Aspirin as a prophalyxis for her chest pain
Complications
Medication Administration
-Headaches, dizziness, sweating, Tinnitus, respiratory
alkalosis, GI bleed,heptotoxicity, decrease blood iron
level, prolonged bleeding time, Confusion (2020 Nurses
Drug Handbook, 2020)
Contraindications/Precautions
-Active bleeding or coagulation disorders; breastfeeding;
current GI bleed or ulcers; hypersensitivity to aspirin,
aspirin products, other NSAIDs, tartazine dye, or their
components, third trimester of pregnancy. (2020 Nurses
Drug Handbook, 2020)
Interactions
-ACE inhibitors, beta blockers-decreased antihypertensive
effect.
-Possibly acetazolamide toxicity
-Activated charcoal decreased aspirin absorption

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
-Reduction in inflammation
-Reduction of fever
-Relief from mild to moderate pain

medication in the patient was evidence by the reduction of the
patient's chest pain.
ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES
May be administer PO, Suppositories.
Adults: 325 to 650 mg every 4hrs. or
500 mg every 3 hr as needed to
relieve mild pain or fever. 160-325 mg
daily for 30 days to prevent acute
myocardial infarction. (2020 Nurses
Drug Handbook,2020) Patient's dose:
Aspirin 81 mg daily
Nursing Interventions
-Don't crush timed-release or
controlled release aspirin tablets
unless directed.
- Ask about tinnitus. This reaction
usually occurs when blood aspirin
level reaches or exceeds maximum
dosage for therapeutic effect. (2020

Client Education
-Stop aspirin 1 week before an
elective surgery or expected
childbirth.
-Take NSAID with food , milk,
oe an 8 oz glass of water to
reduce gastric discomfort. (ATI,
