Brainstorming Report on water conservation By: Abdulwahab Alali June 22, 2021 EGR 1403 22/06/21 Brainstorming Report 1 Executive Summary Finding an effective solution to water conservation problems that is ecofriendly has been a single question that has been avoided over the years that is worth asking. The Ted talk revealed that cleans water sources are greatly deteriorating due to high rate of pollution in surface water sources. The content of this report is a brainstorming of surface water pollution, water conservation challenge and how hydraulic rams can be used as in a massive scaled to help conserve water from surface water sources. The brainstorming revealed that there is a great need for effective engineering solution to help solve the clean water conservation as scarcity rate in increasing. Hydraulic Ram has been revealed as one of the most appropriate engineering solutions that can be applied in a massive scale to help avert the situation. 6/14/2021 Brainstorming Report 2 Table of Contents Executive Summary ................................................................................................................. 2 Introduction ............................................................................................................................ 4 Clean water scarcity ................................................................................................................ 5 Data showing areas in the world with clean water and improved conservation since 2015 . 6 Brainstorming Process ............................................................................................................ 7 Conclusions ............................................................................................................................. 8 Appendix A – Generating Solutions ........................................................................................ 9 Appendix A – Generating Solutions ...................................................................................... 10 Appendix A – Generating Solutions ...................................................................................... 11 Appendix B – A self-sustainable hydraulic Ram .................................................................... 12 Appendix B – A self-sustainable hydraulic Ram .................................................................... 13 Appendix C – project – Schedule .......................................................................................... 14 Appendix C – project – Schedule .......................................................................................... 15 Appendix C– Project schedule as per the Semester. ............................................................ 16 6/14/2021 Brainstorming Report 3 Introduction • How do you solve the water conservation dilemma? • Solving the water conservation dilemma is one of the questions that environmentalists ask in this era apart from sustainability. • Water conservation arguably has a greater impact on human life as everything dealing with production depends on water. • Water is a key resource used in life, food production, economic development, and general well-being. • 71% of the universe is covered in water, and rainfall on most occasions replenishes used water. • However, there is a projected shortage of clean water due to improper use, pollution, and conservation of water sources. 22/06/21 Brainstorming Report 4 Clean water scarcity • Causes of water clean water scarcity • The need for conservation • Effects of clean water scarcity • Effects of poor water conservation • Responses and working solutions 22/06/21 Brainstorming Report 5 Data showing areas in the world with clean water and improved conservation since 2015 22/06/21 Brainstorming Report 6 Brainstorming Process • TED Talk Report on water surface pollution Step 1 • Water pollution is a threat to all of us. • Evaluate the, Is the earth running out of clean water? Step 2 • Evaluate whether conservation is the main issue. 1)Problem → There is a clean water problem in the US due to increase pollution Step 3 2)Problem → There is notable poor water conservation in major states in the US → Step 4 22/06/21 • Solution The design and construction of hydraulic Ram in major rivers and streams as means to conserve water in the United States Brainstorming Report 7 Conclusions • Two major problems as below have been revealed from brainstorming. 1)Problem: There is a clean water problem in the US due to increasing pollution 2)Problem: There are notable poor water conservation insignificant states in the US • The recommended solution to these problems is: • They are cheap and self-sustainable hydraulic Rams that should be constructed and installed in major rivers and streams across the United States. 22/06/2021 Brainstorming Report 8 Appendix A – Generating Solutions 22/06/2021 Brainstorming Report 9 Appendix A – Generating Solutions Before deciding on the application of TRIZ, which is the basic thinking model in engineering, I employed the Deming PDCA model. PDCA in full is an abbreviation which is full stands for (P: Plan, D: Do, C: Check, and A: Act) In reality, I did agree that all problem-solving process involves all these steps. However, all the model is too simple and does not tell clearly what is to be done, so I decided on TRIZ. 22/06/21 Brainstorming Report 10 Appendix A – Generating Solutions • TRIZ is a thinking and problem-solving model used in engineering. • In as much as it is complex, it gives a clear direction that one can take when developing and designing solutions. • The model has 40 principles that guide an engineer in problem-solving. • However, it helps one to: Determine how the problem has been solved before. Come up with an ideal solution. Identify available resources to solve the problem. State the problem and the 22/6/21 Brainstorming Report 11 Appendix B – A self-sustainable hydraulic Ram • A hydraulic ram, also known as Hydra, was first developed by John Whitehurst of Cheshire in the United Kingdom In 1772. • However, the idea of an autonomous pump was later developed in 1796 by Frenchman Joseph Michel Montgolfier. • The patent was first offered in 1797 and 1840 in the US. • Hydraulic Rams have since been used in the US for a long. • However, there is a need for increased design and installation in major rivers as the pollution continues to affect major water sources in most states. • • 22/06/2021 Brainstorming Report 12 Appendix B – A self-sustainable hydraulic Ram • As per various sources, engineering has been one of the major contributors to water pollution as mots wastes coming from firms, industries, and homes are engineering results. • It is also better if engineering could develop solutions to some of its problems, such as water scarcity caused mainly by pollution and contamination of clean water sources. 22/06/21 Brainstorming Report 13 Appendix C – project – Schedule June Task 18 19 21 22 Aug July ust 23 26 2 TED Talk Report Brainstorm Report Draft Final Report Final Report Presentation 22/06/2021 Brainstorming Report 14 Appendix C – project – Schedule Task Preparation TED Talk draft Brainstorm draft TED Talk final copy Brainstorm Final copy Draft Final Report Final Report 22/06/2021 June 18th 19th 21st 22nd 23rd July August 26th 2nd Brainstorming Report 15 Appendix C– Project schedule as per the Semester. 22/06/2021 Brainstorming Report 16
