People believe that dishonesty is more bearable than truth, therefore lies are immersed into our vocabulary and spoken as a second language. In “The Ways We Lie,” Stephanie Ericsson challenges the assumption that, in some cases, the truth will cause more harm than a lie. She condemns white lies as an act of arrogance: “[…] in effect, it is the liar deciding what is best for the lied to. Ultimately, it is a vote of no confidence. It is an act of subtle arrogance for anyone to decide what is best for someone else” (181). The lies Christopher’s father told are not justified. He more than anyone in his life should know how significant telling the truth is to Chris. Also, he had the right to know the truth and elaborate his reaction, Chris shouldn’t have been underestimated by his father. Other lectors conclude that Ed only told what we know as a “white lie” however it goes further Than that, the impact it had on Chris perspective of his father reveals the opposite effect of a white lie. •family ties- his father is all he has and the one person he trusts “I know father loves me because he tells me the truth” (look for exact quote). •Chris prefers things to be simple and straightforward. He shows such preference with his fondness to the maths. Meaning that truth would’ve saved him from many headaches “there’s only one reality, the rest are things that didn’t happen said to have happened” (look for exact quote). Chris has the capacity to break down complexity to create a more simple explanation. Explain how capable Chris is to understand how humans work. (There’s no heaven or earth quote) He more than anyone because he’s detailed (introduced his similarity to Sherlock) He could handle the fact that his mother was dead without any complication (scene when he talks with teacher about his mother being dead). The idea of his mother being alive and some place else is more romantic than dead and gone forever as his father made him believe. While others believe that Ed (Chris dad) took the right path by lying to his son and Assumed that it was best for him to think that his mother was dead instead of knowing that she left him. Took for granted the pain that Chris felt when he discovered the truth. (scene where he found out the truth and was left speechless). The death of his mother didn’t seem a troubling topic to Chris however is evident that he missed his mother. “My mind is like a video recording that I can rewind when I want”(look for exact quote) after, with great nostalgia he remembered moments with his mother. Although I admit that they are right about Chris’s mother being the one who decided to leave, I cannot accept the conclusion that it was right of Ed to hide those letters from Chris. It might’ve not been enough but she clearly had the intention to be reunited with Chris. —part in letter where she talks about the park and how she wished he was there— It is easier to lie yet the consequences of doing so come in handy. Trust is fragile, once you break it, it is never the same. Ed decided to lie to Chris, he assumed that it was best for him to not know that his mother had left them. What he did was not right and there is no excuse to that even if it was an insolent act of good intent.
