Essay 1 Draft 1
One of the worst feelings is not being able to do what you have been wanting to do. In the story “Soldier’s
Home” by Ernest Hemingway, Krebs is a young soldier who went into war at a young age and served 2 years
between 1917 and 1919. Throughout the story, Krebs shows the reading how his life is full of punishments
and how he feels alienated from others.
In the story, page 104 second last paragraph states “At first Krebs, who had been at Belleau Wood,
Soissons, the Champagne, St. Mihiel and in the Argonne did not want to talk about the war at all. Later he
felt the need to talk but no one wanted to hear about it. His town had heard too many atrocity stories to be
thrilled by actualities. Krebs found that to be listened to at all he had to lie and after he had done this twice
he, too, had a reaction against the war and against talking about it. A distaste for everything that had
happened to him in the war set in because of the lies he had told. ”, This is one of the times where the author
shows the reader that the one thing that Krebs wants to do after returning from war is the only thing that he
can’t do. which is to talk about the war to his townspeople and tell them the story of his deployment and not
to lie while doing so. With this in mind, this quote shows the reader an example of a punishment that the
character is going through. Due to all of this Krebs feels alienated and doesn’t want to talk or interact with
anyone.
Another example is on page 2 paragraph 5 which states “ He would have liked to have a girl but he did not
want to have to spend a long time getting her. He did not want to get into the intrigue and the politics. He did
not want to have to do any courting. He did not want to tell any more lies “. This is another example that
shows the reader how the main character’s life demonstrates punishment because he wants to be with a girl
but also can’t due to all the reasons that he states such as time, love, affection towards the girl, and this also
show the reader how Krebs is alienated from everyone and how he doesn’t want to talk or interact with
anyone.
Not being able to do the main things that you want to do in life is a state in life that no one wants to be in.
Ernest Hemingway shows the reader through the character Krebs how not being able to do the one thing you
have been wanting to do can cause a person to be different in many ways and how all of this can cause a
person to be alienated from society to a point of where the person doesn’t want to have anything to do with
the society around him or her.

Your thesis needs to tell the reader where you see Krebs' life being "full of punisments and how he feels
alienated from others". How do other interact with him? How does he interact with them?
Do not start a body paragraph with a quote. Start with a topic sentence. A body paragraph should not be 6
lines of a quote. Where is your analysis?

Writing statement
Multicultural perspective is a class filled with many reading and writing assignments. From just
the first half of the semester, I have learned that stories can have multiple meanings and how
each reader will understand the reading in their own way. I believe that my writing will still
need to improve because I know for sure that I still have many grammatical issues and that it’s
one of the main things I need to focus on so that my writing can get better. After doing some of
the writing responses and the essays I can see how throughout the different English classes I
have taken, I can see an improvement in my ability to connect various parts of a story to my
thesis or my reasoning in a writing response. Some of the things that I still need to work on are
my ability to see the story from a different Pov than what I initially see when I read the story
and some improvement, I need to make in my writing is not start my paragraph with a quote
and write in a way that’s more pleasant to the reader. One of the struggles I had while writing
essays and writing responses is the ability to make connections in the readings to help me draft
my essays and responses better.
