Forest:
The Mendocino National Forest (MNF) is composed of 913,306 acres and is located north of the San
Francisco Bay Area. It is the only National Forest in California that is not crossed by a paved road or
highway. The land rises from 750 feet in the Sacramento Valley foothills on the Forest’s eastern edge
to over 8,000 feet of the Yolla Bolly Mountains in the northern part of the forest. The forest has rich
history of human habitation, from the five Native American peoples (the Yuki, Nomlaki Wintu, Patwin
Wintu, Eastern Pomo, and Northeastern Pomo) who continue to partner with the Forest Service. In the
early 1900s, many visitors came to the area in search of the minerals dissolved in the hot springs for
the supposed health benefits of baths in several resorts and spas. Today, the MNF is visited for a wide
range of interests including the tranquility of remote Wilderness and nearly 300 miles of off-highway
vehicle trails and roads traversing through the beautiful scenery and challenging terrain. Wilderness
and Wild Scenic River uses, Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, off-highway vehicle use,
hiking, camping, fishing, and mountain biking, are popular activities with visitors. The MNF is truly
one of numerous uses, including timber management, livestock grazing, special uses, and robust
recreation program of motorized and nonmotorized activities.
