Gilbert Wandera 9498 Sign 0799045310 ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND The government of Kenya under the KERRA urgency had plans to modernize Musikoma – Mungatsi road of about 78 km, it therefore handed the mandate to Gab International Construction Company Limited after qualifying in an interview. Application letters plus valid certificates of completion on the recent projects together with the owned construction plants or affordable ones on the basis of borrowing were presented by a number of companies. The Gab International now as an organization qualified and was granted the task which they began in the year 2017. The government also thought it best by assigning some of its representatives, i.e Engineers, levelers, supervisors, surveyors and inspectors on the site in order to approve, second and give the advice in all the proceedings. These representatives were also to make sure that the work done was of high quality and durable. They were to give reports daily together with the graphical evidences of the work in completion at the end of the day. Examples of the additional daily reports were; weather, breakdown of machines plus any other relevant outcomes. Tests of samples were extracted from the field to the laboratory (situated in Bungoma town)in order to test whether the properties of the specimen can suit the given area/section. The government was to refund the company of all the agreed capital after the completion of the work on sections over the agreed distance just after the warranty timeout. ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE GENERAL MANAGER DIRECTOR SITE MANAGER INSPECTOR TECHNICIAN FOREMAN OFFICE SECRETARY WATCHMAN WORKERS DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DAILY ACTIVITIES This formula is used in any layer to get where the TOE PEG is placed = THICKNESS OF THE LAYER 0.150m × × BASE OF THE LAYER 4m + + DISTANCE (The cut) (From center to edge level) 4.5m Example For road formation: Road formation starts at Final Earth Works eg In the sketch drawn above. = TOE PEG 1. Know the height, thickness in m Base 0.150m × 4 + 4.5m = T/ Peg S/Base 0.325m × 4 + 4.5m = T/ Peg TSG 0.450m × 4 + 4.5m = T/ Peg BSG 0.600M × 4 + 4.5m = T/ Peg “FEW FILLS” – SAME TO FILLS REMARKS It’s very important to know and notice the height from OGL to finished Road Level for job done well. (Easy calculation) B. THE TOE PEG It’s the distance measured from the center of the road towards the cut. TO FIND THE TOE PEG (i) (ii) Of the bottom Sub-Base Depth (thickness) × slope + 0.625m × 4 + =6 Of Sub-Base (0.175 + 0.150) × 4 + 3.5 0.325 × 4 × 3.5 = 4.8 Distance from the center to the edge level 3.5 ROAD CONSTRUCTION - Supposing you have been given a section which is not flat and that also has an existing road model; to construct a modified road with designed level as shown below. (i) Cut the hip and fill the valley (ii) Begin compacting from the Final Earth Work top level then fill the layers. (iii) FOR DRAINAGE Fill all the layers of the road-cut, compact the excavate for the drainage in both 2 sides. Attain a drainage of 1m deep. C. FIVE POINT ROAD DATA Edge levels Example 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒚−%𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒆 ×𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝟏𝟐𝟕𝟗.𝟔𝟗𝟔 − 𝟒% × 𝟎.𝟓 𝟏𝟎𝟎% = 1279.676 (Shoulder) N/B – FOR LEVELS, DO NOT BREAK. D. ROAD SLOPES (1) CAMBER - Camber means straight - Here, water flows in either directions - From centerline in either sides, the levels are being subtracted using the %. Whenever the % is 2.5, it’s in both left and right and shoulder will also remain of the same % if its 4%. (2) CORNER (Super Elevation) - (i) (ii) The percentage changes depending on how the ground behaves, e.g 5.2% (+) -2.5% (-) E. CULVERTS Types of Culverts a) Access b) Cross (i) ACCESS CULVERTS of 6m long Question 1. Supposing you have been given two levels for an Access Culvert (2 known with 1 unknown) Find x N/B – Water flows from the highest point to the lowest point. Solution X …… 1271.123 – 1270.999 = 0.124 𝑫𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 = 𝟎.𝟏𝟐𝟒 𝟐𝟎 = 0.0062% (Cross fall) X = 1270.99 + 0.0062 x 15 (DON’T BREAK) = 1271.092m Now drop by 1m to reach culvert invert level. = 1270.092m N/B (a) Access culvert is always determined by FRL (Finished Road Level) at shoulder. (b) The difference between two levels, divided by 20 is known as Cross Fall. PURPOSE OF THE ATTACHMENT After the 1st attachment in module 1, usually, the school through the ILO’s office recommends trainees to put in practice all the theoretical skills learnt by being attached somewhere in Year II in the field for 3 months. The main purpose of the attachment is to expose the trainee to some of the live activities, both modern and incoming ones practically. Here, now the student starts building a mind of questionnaires, creativeness and innovativeness. Upon facing challenges in the field, the trainee now learns how to handle them and solve them without worry in future. Skills are also one of the major purpose of an attachment, whereby a trainee acquires some skills upon interacting with strange and leaned brains. The attachment also equips the trainee with the mind of book-keeping, neatness, obedience, kindness, humbleness, tolerance, creativity and innovation together with hardworking mind. CHALLENGES (i) DEWATERING This is the technique used for removal of water (stagnant) either from a solid or from a structure. It is used in water logged road sections over the stagnant water. A water pump was actually suitable for this task since the use of baskets was a bit tiresome and time wasting. Sometimes the water pump would breakdown leading to stagnation of the work. (ii) WEATHER Sometimes back, depending on the season, the rainy weather would be experienced during working hours almost halfway the day; either from morning to evening or vice vasa. This stopped all the proceedings on site leading to postponing of the task to next day. Also this rain could sometimes disqualify all the work done during that day which was yet to be completed by soiling and dumping all the material. This brought loss. (iii) DELAYED WEDGES/ SALARIES Usually, workers used to complain over their late payment and that when delivered, they deliver in bits and in small quantities; not as expected. This actually could force them to conduct a cool strike which could last up to two weeks or more. The work could also be forced into stagnation for those two weeks. RESOLUTIONS TO THE CHALLENGES For dewatering, the company is supposed to acquire by whichever means three water pumps with skillful personnel/ operator to cater for the impromptu damages. As for water, since it is nature, the company should organize well it’s workers especially in sunny seasons and perform the work frequently as per the days. They should set all the assets required in order and ready including the machines together with their operators. Workers are supposed to be looked upon in terms of wedges and salaries in time and in wholes. This will boost up their need of wanting to work hard and smart. FINDINGS 1. I found out that the company on the ground had other road construction projects across the sub-counties and counties. For example;- The Bumula Road Construction in Bumula Sub-county, Bungoma County and The Shianda Road Construction in Kakamega County. 2. There was need to demolish all the existing manmade and old culverts and also natural rocky ground by either blasting or using an excavator. This was done in order for the road formation to fit its “plan” during construction i.e Road Level. 3. I also found out that generally, the good work which was displayed on the site was due to close and frequent supervision from both the company and the government representatives with more of advises and suggestions. 4. Lastly, I found out that the senior employers and employees were actually willing to take me through all the processes on site. Day by day they taught me, assigned me, questioned and recommended where applicable. Travelling from the Yard (The company’s encamped temporary Centre of settlement) to the site wasn’t a problem since the company had owned a number of vehicles as means. I was also theoretically, practically and mechanically taught how the machines on the site operated. Some of them were:Excavator, bulldozer, grader, shovel and a Level machine. RECOMMENDATIONS I recommend that all the materials needed in terms of quantity should be readily assembled to avoid the delay of work e.g fuel for vehicles. In most cases, operators of these machines were much restricted over the quantity of fuel to be used per day without even considering the type of ground or soil to be dealt with in the planned section, or even without considering the emergency breakdown of machines. I suggest that workers to be paid on time and accordingly. This will boost their eagerness of working hard. Some even used to travel long distances to the site by their own means. I also propose that the manager and director of the company should assign faithful, humble, hardworking and kind leaders on the ground in order to cater wisely for the needs and desires of all the employees and incase there be raised any concern or any cry for help from these employees, they are the once to settle the matter immediately and with sincerity. CONCLUSIONS Looking forward to my third year of study and recalling my experiences in my first attachment in Module I and in this one, I hereby first thank The Almighty God for sending to me destiny helpers with kind hearts and also by giving me strength, knowledge and the anointing of success in it. I also thank my Dear Parents and all the personnel involved in my three months’ journey of my attachment. I humbly pray that may God, our creator, bless them abundantly. My supervisor, the inspector on site, this humble man with an understanding heart, Mr. Nyagi A. Bonphace, I really humble to appreciate this soul, he played his part well, may The Lord anoint him more. Finally, I bless the Name of the Lord for just as in my first attachment, He has again used able and destined personnel to give me victory in this attachment. I now hand over the mantle of a greater portion of blessings to our lovely ILO’s office (staff) and The Sigalagala National Polytechnic in fraternity:- my tutors, my fellow students and workers. Receive! The recommended page of conclusion was just a page, were it not so, I would have filled the whole of this book due to the joy and favor I attained from my surrounding. But as for now, Shallom!
