CITIZEN JOURNALISM
People without professional journalism training can use the tools of modern
technology and internet to create, augment or fact-check media on their own or in collaboration
with others.
TYPES OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM
1. Sharing photographs, videos and audio
Posting on blogs, Facebook and other social media sites
2. Sharing of opinions
Commenting on things you find online makes you become a citizen journalist by
sharing your opinions with others.
3. Sharing of discovery
Sharing information with the world after discovering news
4. Sharing of expertise
Creating a blog or doing a report on a topic you are knowledgeable on, even though
you are not a journalist.
ADVANTAGES OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM
1. It empowers local communities, as it helps get local citizens more involved in the events
affecting their lives.
2. It also brings individuals together to make a positive change in their community.
3. They provide a more interesting version of the story instead of the scripted version which
newspapers publish.
4. News can be told without being swayed by political views or other agendas.
DISADVANTAGES OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM
1. Citizen journalists are both the writer and editor of their stories, their telling of the events
may be influenced by their feelings and opinions.
2. There is no formal training involved in citizen journalism.
