1. Roaring 20’s- A new age of prosperity. The real significance of the decade was the birth of new values.
America was experiencing economic and social changes.
2. Red Scare- Americans feared a communist revolution because of a wave of strikes that happened. It
created an atmosphere of panic.
3. Teapot Dome Scandal- The Secretary of Interior gave government lands in Teapot Dome, Wyoming to
business friends in exchange for bribes.
4. ‘Rugged Individualism’- President Hoover’s belief that there should not be much government
interference with businesses, and they should succeed
5. Henry Ford/Model T- Henry Ford was an engineer and early car manufacturer with the goal to make
cars that everyone could afford. The Model T was the first car many middle-class Americans could
afford.
6. Frances Willard- Elected as President of the National Women’s Temperance Union. She advocated
women’s rights, suffrage, prison reform for women, 8-hour workdays for women, and better working
conditions. She organized the Prohibition Party and made enough states ratify the 18th amendment.
7. Clarence Darrow- Defended Scopes in the Scope “Monkey Trial”. He pointed out contradictions that
were in the Biblical text to Bryan who was an expert on the bible.
8. Flapper9. Tin Pan Alley- A section in New York that song writing, and musical ideas mixed to form popular
music in America
10. Langston Hughes- A poet and writer who expressed this new pride in heritage while attacking racism.
11. Marcus Garvey- Highly controversial political activist who emphasized racial pride. He formed the
Universal Negro Improvement Association in London. He went to the U.S. to help organize African
Americans.
12. Charles Lindberg- The first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. His daring trip made him a national
hero. Went from Roosevelt Field on Long Island to Paris in 33 hours.
Answer the following completely, in your own words. (3 pts. Each)
1. What were the Palmer Raids? How did ‘red scare’ fuel these raids after WWI? Palmer Raids were raids
on people that were accused of plotting to overthrow the government. He arrested them and released
most of them but deported 600. America was high on alert, fearing a Communist revolution.
2. What was the Sacco v. Vanzetti case? Was the ruling on this case fair? Explain. Two immigrants Nicola
Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted of committing a murder during a robbery to get funds
for an anarchist revolution. No, I don’t think that the ruling was fair. The ruling seemed like it was
mainly because of their anarchist views and not because of the evidence that they had.

3. How did red scare, nativism, and racism lead to extremism in US? What were the consequences?
Americans assumed that immigrants from Europe were bombings and made Americans alert and hostile
to foreigners. There was a restriction for immigration.
4. What were the economic policies of the Republican Presidents in ‘Roaring 20’s’? Which laws were
passed? Name them and explain briefly. High Protective Tariffs, Lower taxes on the Wealthy and
Corporations, Lax Enforcement of Antitrust Laws and Regulations.
5. Give 4 reasons for Economic boom in US in the 20’s? Explain each.
A Rise of Automobiles- Cars allowed greater mobility for people. The Model T was priced at $300 per
car which was cheap.
B New Industries- Electricity and appliances that used electricity were wanted by Americans and made
like comfortable.
C More Efficient Production Techniques- Assembly lines and standardized parts made the process of
making products quicker.
D Age of Mass Consumption- Advertising stimulated demand, more people wanted to buy items that
were advertised. The introduction of installment buying by retailers made it so people could buy things
over a period of time.
6. What were the reasons for the government to pass the 18th amendment? What were the consequences?
The National Women’s Temperance Union organized a Prohibition Party that led to the passing of the
18th amendment. America lost money from not selling alcohol
7. Why was the 21st Amendment passed? The popularity of the 18th amendment was lost, and America lost
money.
8. What happened during the Scopes trial? What was the result? Why was the decision though not fair but
right? Darrow examined Bryan as an expert of the Bible and showed many contradictions in it. Scopes
ended up being convicted and his fine of $1 got taken out. It wasn’t fair because he was just teaching,
and an old religious law shouldn’t be there anymore.
9. Who were the ‘lost generation’ writers? Why were they given that name? A group of writers who got
that name because they didn’t fit with everyday life after WW1.
10. Explain the causes and consequences of the ‘Great Migration’. When African Americans moved from
the south to the north. African Americans were still met with racism and other bad things.
11. Why were the 1920’s called the ‘jazz age’ and the culture called ‘Harlem Renaissance’? Explain. This
was a time of when African Americans culture started to be recognized. Harlem Renaissance was started
by middle class African Americans had different dance and musical arts.
