Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was once one of the most unpopular women in Britain, with the Queen, it is said, vowing never to meet her. But life ambles on. Hurts heal. Words soften. Attitudes change. Forgiveness leads to understanding, admiration and affection. Happily married to Prince Charles, for some years Camilla’s worked away with quiet dignity, is now a much-valued member of the Royal family and has a delightfully regal air about her. In a message marking the 70th anniversary of her reign, the Queen said it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla will be known as Queen Consort when Charles becomes King. Following the announcement, it seems a good time to remind ourselves that the Duchess has told of at least two psychic experiences. Camilla once revealed that she was so unnerved by Prince Charles’ “haunted house” that she could not set foot in it for years. The property in question was Dumfries House. The Prince renovated the building in 2007 and opened the Palladian country house in Ayrshire to the public a year later. Camilla allowed an ITV documentary team to follow her around for twelve months. During the programme, she admitted that she could not enter the property after sensing a ghost inside. “If you could have seen it when the Prince first spotted it, you wouldn’t have believed it was the same house,” said Camilla. “It was so sad and unlived in, unloved and neglected. And it had a really eerie feel about it. There was definitely a ghost without a shadow of a doubt. “I remember the first time I walked up the steps, got into the hall and thought, ‘I can’t THE Duchess of Cornwall: “There was definitely a ghost.” (Photo: José Cruz/ABr) Psychic News (incorporating Two Worlds) Psychic News was founded in 1932 and Two Worlds in 1887. I remember leaving and thinking ‘I don’t want to come back here again’ and didn’t for a few years.” After the mansion was renovated, Camilla walked in to find a “completely new house. “Whatever was there had disappeared. The whole thing seemed to be smiling again.” Speaking about what one report termed the “spookiness” of the property, the Duchess said: “I love hearing clocks striking together. We’ve got ten or eleven grandfather clocks that were collected by the Queen Mother. “They are all supposed to strike at the same time, but they never do. However much you wind them, they’re always out of sync.” Dumfries House was “saved” by the Prince after the building was put on the market. A group convened by Charles secured the property and its furniture for £45 million, with £20 million personally guaranteed by him. Ghost changes TV channels BEFORE marrying into the Royal family, Camilla lived at Bolehyde Manor, a Grade II listed house, which is located in Allington, Wiltshire. In a book on the Duchess, Royal biographer Penny Junor says that the property came with “a resident ghost. “Camilla was typically unfazed. She would joke about how she’d be sitting on the sofa watching television, and the ghost would come and sit beside her and change the channels. “She never saw it, but she could feel it next to her, and she would laugh about how she and the ghost always wanted to watch different programmes.” The Royal family has a long history steeped in psychic experiences. It has never been denied that the Queen Mother sat with a medium on many occasions after King George VI passed on. However, what was denied, as it caused a right Royal rumpus at the time, was that she also consulted society psychic Tom Corbett, even though he was photographed leaving Clarence House, where she lived. Some years ago, I purchased a massive 666-page book, Counting One’s Blessings, which is subtitled The selected letters of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Dated April 12, 1923, one is addressed to D’Arcy Osborne, which I assume refers to British diplomat Francis D’Arcy Godolphin Osborne, the 12th Duke of Leeds and a minister to the Holy See. Writing at nearly midnight, Elizabeth says, “I wish you would come in one evening if you can and drink a cocktail and exchange a few ideas on magic and politics and Spiritualism and religion… and all the terribly interesting things in this world.” Back to the Queen, who is reported to have felt the presence of John Brown, Queen Victoria’s faithful ghillie, throughout Balmoral. Paton) during a stay in the 1980s at the Queen’s private home, Sandringham House, in Norfolk. Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, is said to have 25 ghosts. They include Elizabeth I, whose presence, say some, was felt by the Queen and Princess Margaret. Ashes to ashes… ANOTHER member of the Royal family who also frequently received a bad press was the party-loving Princess Margaret, who loved holidaying on the private island of Mustique in the West Indies. Indeed it was there that a scandal erupted after she was photographed in the sea with her then toyboy lover Roddy Llewellyn. Now a retired landscape gardener, in what The Daily Mail called “an incredible acknowledgement,” last month the Queen allowed Roddy, who is now a knight after inheriting a baronetcy, to visit where Margaret’s ashes are stored. Journalist Richard Eden said he could disclose that Roddy, who had an eight-year PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 202255 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 NEWS The bear facts… PRINCESS MARGARET gave advice through a medium to Helena Bonham Carter, who portrayed her in “The Crown.” (Photo: Sophie Mutevelian/Netflix) affair with Margaret, was “granted special permission to visit her final resting place on the anniversary of her death.” After the Princess passed on in 2002 at the age of 71, “her ashes were placed in the tomb at St George’s Chapel to rest alongside the remains of her parents, George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.” The Queen is the only person who can grant access to the Royal Family’s tomb. Sir Roddy, who now lives in a village in SW France, had apparently asked for permission to do so. “Going to Windsor was an enormously important moment for me,” he told friends at a reception following the Chelsea funeral of conservationist John Rendall, at which Roddy was an usher. “After two years of having absolutely nothing in my diary, I had two crucial dates – to go to St George’s and to be at John’s funeral.” Sir Roddy described how “tiny” the space was in the royal crypt, commenting: “I don’t know how there will be space for the Queen; there’s hardly any room next to King George and the Queen Mother.” He added it had been Margaret’s express wish to be cremated, and that she did not want to be interred at Frogmore, which she viewed as too gloomy. On the day of her funeral, Princess Margaret’s body was driven from Windsor Castle to Slough crematorium for a municipal cremation. “She was simply listed as ‘Number Eight’ at the crematorium,” said Sir Roddy. “Can you imagine that!” exclaimed Sir Roddy. 6 PSYCHIC PSYCHICNEWS NEWS || MARCH MARCH 2022 The Queen was said to be despairing of Margaret’s “guttersnipe life,” but the Princess refused to end the relationship. Sir Roddy, whom Margaret once referred to as “my last great love,” remained on good terms with him after their relationship ended and he married someone else. One of Princess Margaret’s closest friends, Lady Anne Glenconner, commented: “After Princess Margaret’s funeral, the Queen said, ‘I’d just like to say, Anne, it was rather difficult at moments, but I thank you so much for introducing Princess Margaret to Roddy because he made her really happy’.” By the way, it emerged a while ago that Helena Bonham Carter consulted a psychic, an astrologer and a graphologist ahead of playing Princess Margaret in The Crown. The actress said she spoke to the Princess, who gave her permission to portray her in the Netflix series. Ms Bonham Carter told the Cheltenham Literary Festival: “When you play someone who is real, you kind of want their blessing. “She said, ‘You’re better than the other actress that they were thinking of’… She was really good at complimenting you, but putting you down at the same time. “Then she said: ‘You have to brush up and be more groomed and neater… Get the smoking right’ by smoking in a very particular way. “Remember that the cigarette holder was very much a weapon of expression as it was for smoking.” THE other night, I watched a fascinating programme on Channel Five called The Queen’s Guards: A Year in Service. Featured were the Coldstream Guards, which is the oldest regiment in the British Army. During the documentary, it emerged that for ceremonial duties the soldiers wear real bearskin hats, which made me flinch. The next day, Jack Maidment, the Deputy Political Editor for MailOnline, wrote: “Animal rights campaigners, including the PETA UK group, have long pushed for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to switch to using man-made material instead of the pelts of Canadian black bears. “But the MOD announced in December last year that faux fur did not meet its performance requirements and real fur would continue to be used.” A leaked e-mail, obtained by LBC radio, showed Boris Johnson was grilled by one of his Uxbridge constituents on the matter. Mr Maidment commented: “The decision to stick with the real fur is unlikely to have been well received by Mr Johnson’s wife, Carrie, who is a passionate environmentalist... “PETA UK named Mrs Johnson as its ‘Person of the Year’ in 2020, describing her as a ‘fearless force for good when it comes to making the world a kinder place for animals’.” Three years ago Mrs Johnson tweeted: “There is no excuse for trophy hunting. I’ve heard all sorts of attempts to defend it on tenuous conservation grounds. That’s rubbish.” The e-mail showed that Mr Johnson was contacted by a constituent who requested a meeting “to discuss the Queen’s Guard’s use of bearskin for their ceremonial caps.” Sent in December 2021, the response from Mr Johnson read: “As you may be aware, the Ministry of Defence recently conducted tests on a fake fur fabric commissioned by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as a potential alternative to the existing bear pelts used to make the Queen’s Guard’s ceremonial caps. “This material was assessed against five requirements. As I understand it, while it met the basic standard for water absorption, it showed unacceptable rates of water shedding and performed poorly on visual assessment. “Sadly, as the man-made fur did not meet the standards required for a ceremonial cap which is worn throughout NEWS NEWS CHANGING of the guard at Buckingham Palace. However, all these matters are kept under review.” PETA UK has argued there is “No reason the MOD shouldn’t switch to the new animal-friendly equivalent.” The ceremonial headdress can only be worn by foot soldiers in certain regiments, including the Grenadier Guards, the Coldstream Guards, the Scots Guards, the Irish Guards and the Welsh Guards. An Army spokesman said the bearskins “are sourced from the by-product of a necessary cull of black bears in Canada. “The bearskins worn by the Guards are part of our proud military history and identity. There are no suitable alternatives.” However, PETA UK said it had found “no evidence of any Canadian province running – or having previously run – any official black bear culling programmes.” The decision to stick to using real bearskin is not one which I will take my hat off to and is enough to make one’s fur fly. admire is Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who doesn’t seem to duck, dive and connive as much as the rest of them. But it is my belief and it comforts so many people.” Gillian, said the paper, “warns followers that she doesn’t do tarot reading in the ‘conventional way’ and is taking tips from a reality TV star. “She launched a private page for the sessions, with more than 930 members, and started giving them away for free.” Earlier this year, Gillian said, “Won’t ever do as a business, but it’s good for the soul to help share love and healing to people.” Now, said Mr Patterson, Gillian has “changed her mind and says she has 40 bookings lined up from punters looking to talk to the Other Side, although she’s vowed to keep doing free weekly readings. “She posted an ad looking for someone to help her and offered them a fee as well as commission on every booking taken. “One emotional client said she was left in tears when a loved one got in touch through Gillian. “But the First Minister’s little sis claimed the readings sometimes go haywire because she has so many dead folk trying to talk to her.” Of a recent event, Gillian said: “We had another fabulous night with Spirit. We had a busload of them coming in. “It was quite strange. It was very difficult for me to interpret a lot of the stuff because they were just coming in fast and furious. “I couldn’t work it all out. I was being given names and symbols and shapes. People were saying ‘I understand that; I understand that’.” Whether Nicola will find her psychic sister’s interest in Spiritualism a votewinner remains to be seen. I reckon she’ll stay schtum and abstain on this issue… n PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 202277 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 NEWS Hong Kong’s youth turns to crystals and counselling MORE than two years have passed since pro-democracy protesters clashed with police at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Thousands of students were arrested. Many are now imprisoned. In the Hong Kong Free Press, Peter Lee reported that New Age shops like We Luv Tarot and Alma Crystal now find themselves serving the needs of a new client base of Hong Kongers. Emma, a law student, who used an assumed name to protect her identity, told him that she could not sleep at night after some of her friends were arrested for chanting slogans on their graduation day. Unable to open up about her feelings, Emma turned to her black rutilated quartz, a translucent crystal flecked with black stripe-like inclusions. “A few months earlier,” said Mr Lee, “during a difficult romantic break-up, Emma had started to buy crystal bracelets. “In the New Age lexicon, every crystal has a distinctive power; black rutilated quartz is said to help remove negative energy.” Emma told him that wearing crystals helped to lighten her mind and ease anxiety. Though she “still had my friends around, but for some reason I found myself unable to open up to them.” Instead, crystals helped Emma to deal with the painful feelings that the anniversary of the university demonstrations brought up. Phoebe Chan, co-owner of Alma Crystal, a shop dealing in New Age jewellery, told the paper that “When you cannot find anything helpful, you start to try ‘superstitious’ things.” Mr Lee said that shops offering crystals, fortune telling and psychic and healing services have long had a place in Hong Kong life, but “these practices were often stigmatised as superstitious. Their traditional base was mainly older grassroots people.” Now Alma Crystal’s customers “include 8 PSYCHIC PSYCHICNEWS NEWS || MARCH MARCH 2022 FLASHBACK to 2019 and protestors take to the streets of Hong Kong with laser pointers. They also drew Phoebe Chan into opening a shop with her partner Hugo Tang. The couple started with an online outlet in November 2020 and expanded into a small shop in just eight months. “Young women going through difficult times are particularly attracted to a belief in the power of crystals,” said Phoebe, who explained that during an unhappy period of her life, she put on a moonstone bracelet and the effect was dramatic. “I felt so peaceful,” Phoebe added. “I was very calm, rid of distracting thoughts and felt comfortable.” She realised that “crystal buyers are in dire need of heart to heart conversation,” so decided her own shop would provide just that. Peter Lee commented: “Chan and Tang’s shop is a brightly lit space with a counter in the centre arrayed with shimmering crystal bracelets, all carefully sorted by colour. “Shelves line the walls, displaying still more crystals and accessories. Customers typically walk around first, browsing the collection. But then many will take a seat at the counter and begin revealing their secrets, worries, hopes and fears to two complete strangers.” Usually first-timers will not share much, Phoebe explained, “but when they come around for the second time, they will be willing to talk. “I want to offer a feeling that I understand my customer’s needs and provide them with aid.” Rachel Kwan and Sai Kwok’s customary greeting to customers who come to their fortune-telling We Luv Tarot shop is a statement of reassurance: “This is a safe haven where you can come and say anything. Nothing will leak out. No trouble will follow.” Pointing to a tissue box next to the counter, Rachel said some customers “immediately start crying when they sit down. “What we do is to provide a space for everyone to dump the weight off their minds and carry on with their own journey.” The partners, said Mr Lee, started an online business in 2014 and “now operate a shop in a commercial building in Tsim Sha Tsui. “As pungent white sage incense and soothing music fill the air, Kwan invites clients to relax and talk about their troubles.” NEWS Rachel said that some customers “may have kept a secret for nearly twenty years and not found an outlet. “We will help them sort out their feelings, figure out what they should do and how they can perceive things.” Co-owner Sai Kwok commented: “We are here to help people. We will for sure send them to qualified services if things are beyond our control.” Phoebe Chan added that she does not think her crystal business competes with professional therapy, but provides a support buffer for people in emotional crises facing long queues for help in the public health system. “But affordable public counselling services will not be available until 2023,” she explained. Crystals could “help them to be happier and more positive at the moment.” Rachel Kwan insisted that New Age therapies have educational as well as healing benefits, and that a tarot reading CUSTOMERS are offered a “safe haven” at We Luv Tarot. She said that the goal is to help clients begin to explore “the best solutions for themselves.” The proprietors of both shops are protective of their clients and will not reveal their identities or the content of their conversations. When Peter Lee interviewed Emma, she was in the middle of a difficult time, with university exams and upsetting news from friends in prison. However, she was able to take care of herself without the need for her crystal bracelets. “I have slowly returned to normal life,” said Emma “and found more ways to deal with my emotions by socialising and opening up with my friends. “With or without crystals, as long as you have a healthy mind, you can achieve what you want.” Peter Lee said that since June 2019, “over 10,000 Hong Kongers have been arrested and nearly 2,700 charged in relation to the pro-democracy protests. Many are now imprisoned. “Students account for about 40 per cent of those arrested. Established New Age shops like We Luv Tarot and Alma Crystal now find themselves serving the needs of a new client base of Hong Kongers in need of safe, trusted spaces where they can talk about their problems.” n ‘Dead’ singer’s wife feels his presence ELVIS PRESLEY, the “King of rock ‘n’ roll,” passed on decades ago, but his wife Priscilla still feels her husband’s “presence” every time she visits Graceland, their former home. According to the Daily Star’s Deputy News Editor Andrew Jameson, Priscilla “says there’s an eerie silence at the late star’s estate in Memphis, Tennessee, which is when she recalls vivid memories of the legendary singer.” Priscilla hosted a birthday celebration at the mansion in January to mark what would have been Elvis’ 87th birthday. “Y’know, it’s 45 years since his passing and I still can’t believe it,” she said. “I still think he’s here. I still feel him here.” Elvis purchased the 13.8 acre estate in 1957. The shrine-like home is still decorated in the outlandish style enjoyed by “The King.” “I go in Graceland and I feel his spirit,” Priscilla added. “It’s God’s honest truth. I know he’s living there! He’s there, trust me. It’s very reverent when you walk in. You just become silent.” The couple were married from 1967 to 1973. After Elvis passed on, Priscilla vowed to keep his memory alive for his millions of fans, as well as for herself and their daughter Lisa Marie. “There is no way that Elvis Presley’s legend, his legacy, will ever leave my heart,” she said. “I don’t want it to leave others’ hearts either. “Elvis was born to be who he was. He loved entertaining; he loved people. I want generation after generation to know who he was, what he represented and the human being that he was.” Whenever Priscilla visits the mansion, she sees Elvis “walking down the staircase, remembering all the memories we had and shared and lived. They trigger off. It’s almost like I never left, they are so vivid.” After Priscilla’s son Ben Keough passed on in 2020, she was so badly disturbed by paranormal activity at her home in Beverly Hills, California, that she fled back to Graceland. “Immediately after the devastating tragedy, Priscilla began seeing apparitions and heard loud banging noises, starting around 2.00 am or 3.00 am every morning,” said the Globe newspaper. When Ben’s apparition first appeared to Priscilla, she was “spooked,” but calmed down when he assured her that he was all right and with his Grandad Elvis. A source close to the family said: “One morning, she was startled to hear voices. Priscilla was shocked to see the ghosts of Ben and Elvis, along with the figure of a large woman in between them, which she was convinced was Elvis’ beloved mom, Gladys.” Ben, who took his own life at the age of 27, is buried in the tranquil Meditation Garden on the estate, alongside the graves of Elvis, his mother Gladys, father Vernon and paternal grandmother Minnie Mae. Moving back to Graceland, “seeing” Elvis regularly gave Priscilla comfort. ELVIS PRESLEY’S wife said she felt his spirit presence at his former home. (Photo: Rossano aka Bud Care) “I can hear laughter,” she said. “I can hear music playing in the music room. It’s a very surreal feeling. But it’s not scary. It’s beautiful.” The ground floor and basement rooms of the Graceland mansion are open to the public. Private rooms upstairs, including the bedroom in which Elvis passed on, remain off limits. There is also a museum housing Elvis’ music awards, stage outfits and cars. It is estimated that his records have sold over a billion copies worldwide, more than anyone else in the industry’s history. Sir Kenneth previously told Crystal G. Martin of Oprah.com how he asked Brian for help during one of the most turbulent times in his career. At that point, Sir Kenneth was directing a play in London’s West End, acting as Prof Gilderoy Lockhart in the film adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and writing a script. “My work, especially directing, is often about crisis management,” he said, “but during those days, none of my problemsolving attempts were working because I was permanently preoccupied. “My mind was always spinning and I couldn’t stop it. I wasn’t having a breakdown, but was undeniably stuck. “One day I called my great friend, Brian, whom I’d known for many, many years, and we went on a long walk with our dogs. He’d always been a listening ear in difficult times and I told him how I’d been feeling.” When they got back home, Brian told him: “Look, you need a break. I’m going to make sure you get it twice a day.” Brian invited him to meet with his meditation group, but Sir Kenneth’s first reaction was “I haven’t got time to muck around with this. It was silly, pointless, a waste of time, but towards the end of the 30 minutes, for a brief moment I experienced simple, weightless happiness. I wasn’t thinking about anything at all. The mental chatter had disappeared.” Afterwards, Sir Kenneth felt as if he had just returned from a holiday, “and with that my life changed forever because I had found a way to still my mind.” For the past decade, he has meditated for 30 minutes twice a day. Though Sir Kenneth finds meditation “as difficult as ever,” it has “changed my view of the world. I’ve learned to acknowledge my problems and then let them go. “Thanks to that ability to release them, I understand that frustration is just a passing feeling; I don’t identify with it. “My mind no longer gets congested because each morning and night I start fresh again. I shut off all the noise and thoughts, and listen only to my instinct – that inner voice that, if we just give it a chance, will speak to all of us.” Belfast, which chronicles the life of a working class family during the tumult of the late 1960s in the Northern Ireland capital, is based on Sir Kenneth’s own childhood experiences. It is run by Geraldine Beskin and her daughter Bali, who are proud to be the second and third generations of the same family to own the shop. In this interview, the first point put to Geraldine was “Can you give a potted history of the shop?” THE Atlantis Bookshop was started in 1922 by Paul Brunton, who went on to travel the world and write In Search of Secret India and In Search of Secret Egypt. As he developed, he became a very famous – and true – mystic. Michael Houghton stayed behind, as he identified his true calling was to be a bookseller and the centre of his universe was the Atlantis Bookshop. Michael was a young Jewish immigrant from the East End of London when he “discovered” a love for books and the spiritual side of life. Like so many people interested in these subjects before Harry Potter, he was considered a bit weird by his family, but maintained good contacts with them. He had a nephew who was a greatly gifted musician and a friend of Yehudi Menuhin, the world famous violinist. Michael found so many people who were on the same wavelength as him in bohemian Bloomsbury that his enthusiasm soon led him to start the hub of ideas that is the Atlantis Bookshop. Even now, every day we still have the pleasure of trying to sort out the secrets of the universe with people. Michael was always sweet to me and a great friend of my father. We have a lovely bust of him here in pride of place. A poet and a publisher too, Michael knew absolutely everyone on the occult scene: Tolkien, Austin Spare, Aleister 12 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 GERALDINE BESKIN (pictured right) and her daughter Bali are continuing the family tradition of running the Atlantis Bookshop. (Photo: Instagram/etiennephotography) Crowley, Dion Fortune, W. B. Yeats and Lady Frieda Harris were among his friends. We still have the big names visiting us, but if they are famous we don’t talk about them. However, as J. K. Rowling gave us an acknowledgement in one of her books, we can now admit that she has been to the Atlantis Bookshop. Are you the world’s oldest occult bookshop? No. Watkins Books is older than us and was backed by the Theosophical Society until Mr Watkins died in the 1970s. Michael Houghton was fiercely independent in business and in his journey through life. We are very proud that we have never had backers and the long role our family has played in maintaining and enjoying such a small but important business, which is known and loved all over the world. We were always the edgy shop, as we sell all the Western mystery traditions from alchemy to witchcraft and they did not, so we are the world’s oldest truly magical bookshop. Do you plan celebrations to mark the shop’s centenary? Well, we had great plans which got delayed during lockdowns, so now we are dusting off our notes and firming things up again. Watch this space. How did your family first come to own the shop? Michael Houghton was highly psychic. When my father went into the shop for the first time, Michael was busy and said: “Take a good look around, young man. You will own the place one day.” And so it came to pass. I was here with my mother for years. She passed in 1986. A year or so later, we sold Atlantis to the former Psychic Press Ltd, which produces Psychic News. When the ownership of Psychic News changed and the publication moved to Essex, we purchased the shop and became the owners once again in 2002. That really is an example of life coming full circle. By the way, we would love to meet readers of Psychic News, which we stock, so do pop in and visit us. We’d also be delighted to help if you are searching for a specific Spiritualist or paranormal title, and are only a phone call or e-mail away. We have a large stock of secondhand books that we are way behind in sorting out, but we will always help if we can. Rumour has it that Aleister Crowley used to visit the premises. Is there any truth in this? Indeed he did. Through our Neptune Press, we have published various books of his and he was a frequent visitor here. As an expert on his works, how would you summarise his teachings? NEWS Crowley appeals to the intellect like nobody else. He is funny, preposterous and deeply knowledgeable. He is also a really enjoyable read, although could sometimes have done with a good editor. I think that going to the pub with him would have been embarrassing and memorably fabulous in equal measure. Did he really deserve the title of “The wickedest man in the world”? We have the luxury of knowing so much about him – and quite a lot of it was bad back in the day. If people are honest with themselves, they have strayed a long way from the Victorian moral life too. Crowley was also very brave in writing about his bisexuality, his mistakes and also his triumphs. He couldn’t fit in anywhere and then decided not to try. Crowley was a brilliant conversationalist, but could also be the most tedious man for miles around. Approximately how many books does the shop have on sale? I don’t know, as I’ve not actually counted them, but it’s a probably a good few thousand. We often buy and sell secondhand books, so have stock which is constantly changing, including rare and hard to find editions. At the Atlantis, we offer all the latest titles in our area, from hot-off-the press books through to new, affordable modern paperbacks. What subjects do they cover? All the Western mysteries – witchcraft, Spiritualism, the tarot, astrology, the Kabbalah, folklore, alchemy, moon magic, herbs, voodoo, runes and Norse. The design of books is so lovely now. When I was a lass, we were lucky if there was a drawing or two. Now every page is a delight to read. What's the rarest book you've ever purchased for the shop? Things become rare over time. Even some zines (small-circulation selfpublished works) from the 1970s and ‘80s are now incredibly hard to find. Some collectors have been thrilled to discover that we had them. Fashions change, so be careful of buying what everyone else is. Just because a publication is a limited edition doesn’t mean it’s worth a fortune and you could be stuck with it when you need to sell it. Likewise, what's the most expensive book you've ever sold? An expensive book was a first edition of Manly P. Hall’s Secret Teachings of All AMONGST famous faces to have visited the Atlantis Bookshop is J. K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter. Ages. He was a Canadian author, lecturer, astrologer and mystic. It is the largest and heaviest book we have ever sold. It is about two feet by eighteen inches and weighs several pounds or several kilos. It’s almost impossible to lift. I bought a copy and sold it two hours later. Two years after that the purchaser sold it back to us. Two hours later I sold it again. Weird! What’s the oldest book you have had on sale? We’ve sold fifteenth-century books with clasps and vellum covers. They are never going to be read as they are in Latin and usually Bible-based, but they look and smell fabulous. When leafing through books, do you ever find items like old stamps, postcards, letters, etc? Yes, though people are a lot cleaner with their books now and far fewer of them are smoke damaged, as these days less people smoke. We used to find much more than we do now, but I once discovered a bacon rind being used as a bookmark. Disgusting! Earlier on, I found a copy of an Official Secrets declaration that someone left in a book. My lips are sealed in case I get carted off to the Tower... Do you send books to many parts of the world? Can you name some of the countries? We sell to customers in all the usual places – Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the States. We are firm e-mail friends with folk we’ve never met or who we met when they have been in the UK on their holidays. Your website says you have customers as far away as the North and South Poles. Yes, that’s correct. They’ve never met, but are aware of each other. It just shows that when someone comes into Atlantis, they really are from all walks of life and places far and near. Do you receive visitors from all over the world? Yes again. If customers can’t speak English, we can make ourselves understood by smiles and body language. In most circumstances we can get a customer married up with the right books. Translations from apps are really useful too. What else does the shop sell apart from books? Tarot and oracle cards, bells, candles and silver jewellery. The only crystal we sell is obsidian, as Dr John Dee used it for his scrying. It is marvellous for earthing people and steadying their nerves. PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 13 NEWS But take care you who you lend them to, as they may not be returned! Lastly, the words printed in a physical book seem to have much more authority than titles read on screen. There’s a permanence about a printed book which ebooks lack. THE bookshop sells titles on a range of subjects from the paranormal to other esoteric topics. Have you had any paranormal experiences on the premises? Oh yes. Sometimes I smell roses or other sweet aromas. I’m not as psychic as I sometimes think though, as once a sudden smell was a man in the street smoking a cigar. For some reason I’ve forgotten, we decided to have a dinner party here one night. We have windows at the back of the shop that we’ve since covered over, as we needed the shelf space. The window sills had vases of flowers on them. One of the vases lifted itself off the sill, moved about two feet away from the window, hung in the air until we had all seen it, then gently lowered itself to the ground without spilling a drop of water. The bookshop is in Central London and literally minutes away from the British Museum. Are the overheads, such as business rates, extremely high? Of course they are, but we can’t complain as loudly or frequently as I used to, as during lockdown the council, which owns the premises, let us off a quarter’s rent and gave us a grant. These days, books are readily available to download on the internet. How can you compete with this? We pride ourselves on treating everyone as an individual and in the same way we would like to be treated. We help in various ways and can recommend our stock because Bali and I chose it from the many, many titles which are being published now that the esoteric world is so trendy. We have good relationships with a lot of publishers and know many of the authors, which also helps. One of the ways to success is to trust your feeling for something. The luxury of 14 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 choosing a book yourself is far better than relying on a review. Many titles are available on the internet, but you really cannot beat the wonderful feeling of sitting down in a comfy chair or at the kitchen table and reading a physical printed book. Reading via a PC or mobile phone, etc, is OK, but tiring on the eyes. To settle down and enjoy the sheer delight of holding a proper book and turning paper pages is, if you’ll excuse the pun, a real joy in my book. I do enjoy a good murder mystery on my Kindle, but don’t tell anyone! However, there is something wonderfully tactile about a printed book, which you just cannot achieve with an ebook. Décor-wise, bookshelves packed with interesting titles add colour and interest to a room. Invite friends round and I can guarantee that most people will make a beeline for them. The books people read and keep give so many clues about what someone’s like, their beliefs, interests and outlook on life. The Atlantis Bookshop once featured in a film. Can you give further details about this? Way back in the 1970s, a friend of someone who worked for us wrote a film called Gumshoe, which starred Albert Finney. He starred as a bingo-caller who, bored with his mundane existence, takes out a newspaper advert offering his services as a private detective. The Atlantis Bookshop was used as a location. There is a scene where some drugs are packed and sent to a Crowleytype figure. We have shipped all sorts of strange things from shoes to teddy bears for people as well as their books, but obviously never anything illegal. Over the years, we have provided help, expertise, props and locations for TV shows, radio programmes, news items and Hollywood productions as well as taking part in interviews for TV, radio and print media. As well as selling books, do you organise other events? We have held an enormous number of book launches, art exhibitions, author events and workshops. We will be doing them again soon. The best way to hear about them is to join our mailing list. Do you believe in life after death? If so, what's convinced you? I very much do believe in life after death and trained as a medium, so I could know when Spirit is around and wanting to work through me. I don’t work as a medium, but it often kicks in when I am trying to assist someone. Friends and loved ones have visited me often so it would be silly to try and even think they aren’t all with us still. Our bodies may wear out like a pair of comfy shoes, but we continue. n The Atlantis Bookshop is at 49a Museum Street, London WC1A 1LY. Tel: 020-7405 2120. HARLIE-SKYES TOBITT was just four months old when she passed on. Born in the middle of the pandemic, Harlie-Skyes spent the majority of her time in a hospital bed. After being diagnosed with several genetic disorders, doctors were unable to discover the exact condition which caused her passing. Shortly after this, her parents started a charity to raise money for, and awareness of, the genetic disorders which ended her earthly life. Elaine Gray, her mum, comes to my centre. She has been a member for several years, so I suggested a sponsored walk to raise as much for the charity as possible. We organised a walk between the piers in Bognor Regis and Brighton, West Sussex, and raised money in collection buckets as we went. Before the walk took place, it was featured very favourably in the Bognor Regis Observer. How many people took part? There were about fifteen altogether, but only five finished. Thankfully, we were blessed with a sunny, calm November day. Did you get into training before the walk? Yes. About two months beforehand, most days I walked around five miles. I was prepared for the walk, but it was a long way. Altogether we walked 26 miles. It was extremely demanding towards the end of the day and our legs were really tired. It took its toll on us mentally and physically. From pier to pier felt more like 50 miles. Did you have breaks on the way? We stopped several times for refreshments and comfort stops. What was the first thing you did on reaching home? I had a long, hot bath and well-deserved cup of tea. We were all very tired when we got home. The next day I felt exhausted. I had a very lazy day to help with the pain and cups of tea and biscuits. We all suffered with sore feet and had blisters on them. After walking such a long way, our shoes were rubbing in several places. The next few days were spent resting and putting Savlon antiseptic on my poor feet. All told the walk took ten hours, but it was worth every penny to raise funds for the charity. All the money we raised will be put towards life-saving research and supporting the families of children with genetic disorders. Let’s start at the very beginning. Where were you born and when? I was born in 1969 in Bognor Regis. Were you raised in a Spiritualist household? No. I was raised as a Roman Catholic and went to a Catholic school. I have had my beliefs in God and prayer since I was little. Where do you live now? I still live a couple of miles from the town where I was born and have never moved from the area. Can you describe your first psychic experience? This happened when I was about five years old and I had an awareness of spirit children playing in my bedroom. At the time I didn’t really know they were spirit children, as it felt normal to connect and play with them. ELAINE GRAY is seen cuddling her daughter HarlieSkyes in hospital. What psychic gifts do you have? I’m very lucky with my psychic gifts, as my development has given me the opportunity to work with all my clair DARREN HART: “You just need love and sincerity.” senses – clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, claircognisance and clairgustance. I also use psychometry, which means reading the energy from an item to perceive information about its history or ownership. Lastly, I’m a trance medium working very closely with the spirit world and allowing for the voice of a spirit communicator to channel through me to bring a more personal communication with the Other Side. Where did you develop them? This has been an interesting journey for me, as my personal development came from my life’s experience and journey. My soul’s journey has inspired me to develop my ability to communicate by using my own sensitivity. I developed all of my skills at the Arthur Findlay College in Essex, which I have been visiting for many years. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s finest teachers, who gave me the opportunities to develop my mediumship and psychic abilities. Equally as important, they also gave me knowledge about the scientific approach to mediumship as well as learning of the miracle of communication between the two worlds. Are you a full-time medium? If so, is it a somewhat difficult way to make a living financially? Yes, I work full-time as a medium, as I run the Barnham Spiritual Centre in West Sussex and have done for many years. PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 15 FEATURE with the spirit world and working with their innate psychic awareness. We give people the opportunity to unfold in a very loving and supportive environment. BARNHAM SPIRITUAL CENTRE meets at a local Community Hall where those attending find mediumship, friendship and fellowship. (Photo: Facebook) My level of work doesn’t stop at mediumship, as I teach others to develop their psychic gifts. Some time ago, I opened the Darren Hart School of Mediumship. This has enabled me to teach and share my depth of spirituality and knowledge with others through various development circles and psychic workshops. I also demonstrate at other venues around the south of England, organising my own demonstrations, which have been very successful. The financial side of being a full-time working medium is often very difficult and certainly does not allow you to have that much security. It’s not the life that people often think it is. It has taken me many years of no financial support trying to establish my mediumship, which is a passion of mine. To this day it comes from a love of the heart to work in mediumship and not for financial gain, as you will wait forever for that. What jobs have you done in the past? I’ve worked as an actor and was involved in a television show as well as various films with some well-known actors. This helped me in building confidence in working with people and certainly allowed me to use my creative side. I also had a removal company, which was interesting. Again, it certainly gave me a streetwise level of knowledge about running a company and dealing with others from all walks of life. Why did you decide to open the Barnham Spiritual Centre? Centres are needed to help promote spirituality and to become sanctuaries of love and comfort for everybody. A centre should be a place where people feel wanted and provide a sense of support 16 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 and security in their moments of need. The Barnham Spiritual Centre was opened for exactly these reasons. Where does it meet and how often? How’s it done in the last ten years? We meet at Barnham Community Hall every Monday for evenings of mediumship as well as a monthly Divine service on the first Sunday. Additionally, the centre also offers private sittings and spiritual healing. Over the last ten or eleven years, the centre has grown immensely. We have a good number of people coming every week and continue to promote our reason for being there, as it brings such comfort to those who attend not only to witness mediumship, but also enjoy the friendship and fellowship of others. You launched your school of mediumship in the midst of the worst pandemic since the Spanish flu epidemic over a century ago. Wasn’t it a rather perilous time to establish a new venture? I believe that everything happens for a reason. Opening the school of mediumship gave people a reason to find their own spirituality inside themselves. Promoting a venture is all about spirituality and allowing others to bring their own beliefs and gifts into reality. What better time to offer help and guidance than during a pandemic when so many people were feeling lost, lonely and depressed by lockdowns and various rules and regulations, which touched and restricted all our lives? At first, the school was held online due to Covid. Thankfully, the centre is now open again so people can visit physically and not only via Zoom. What kind of subjects do students study? We teach students how to harness and use their natural ability in communicating Why do you think that the majority of mediums are female? There are a lot of female mediums, but as we move forward in life the interest of men working in mediumship has grown. What you must remember is that sensitivity plays a large part in mediumship. Traditionally, men were taught to keep a stiff upper lip and not show their emotions or sensitivity. However, life has moved on. Thankfully, these days we live in times of equality and there is no shame, for want of a better word, of men showing their sensitive side in a range of different situations. No matter what their gender, a good medium works with love, honesty, compassion, understanding and sometimes sympathy. If you have love in your heart for others, the honesty will bring the truth and the compassion will deliver the voice of Spirit. Likewise, if you believe in yourself and take trust in Spirit, you can’t go wrong, as we are only using our natural abilities. I cannot stress enough that the language of communication is love. A good medium will never complicate matters. A medium will use his or her own personality and never try and be anyone else. You just need love and sincerity, and the rest will follow. What brings you the most satisfaction about being a medium? My satisfaction about being a medium is the benefits I can bring to others. It gives me a great sense of quiet satisfaction when I’ve communicated with a loved one in Spirit and brought a moment of healing and a feeling of purpose for the person who is in front of me. The comfort sitters experience lasts a lifetime for them. So, too, can an evidential message at a public demonstration of mediumship. Touching someone’s heart with messages from their loved ones is what feeds my soul. Do you think that Spiritualism still suffers from an “Is there anyone there?” image? If so, how can we counteract this? I believe that in many ways Spiritualism has moved forward and is slowly shedding the “Is there anybody there?” image, which was so often portrayed in films. However, in some people’s eyes it is still all to do with ghostly things. Too many people think that we sit FEATURE around in the dark with our hands on a table and a flickering candle in the background. As we know, this is not what we do. We must continue to educate people about the spirit world and communication with the Other Side, and that our loved ones really are only a thought away. I believe that if we also educate our mediums more in their development, the understanding of Spiritualism will deepen and they can then pass this on and enrich the lives of others. We have to remember that Spiritualism is growth of life. Our mediums are the soldiers on the frontline. If their knowledge of spirituality is lacking, they cannot share this with other people. In essence, mediums are ordinary individuals, but with extraordinary gifts, which are quite natural. When a medium takes sufficient time to develop and listen to the voice of the Spirit, their soul is enriched and they can educate others. Lastly, what’s your philosophy of life? To allow love and the power of God to blend with the souls of those who need the truth of eternal life. I would like to bring the voice of the Spirit to the ears of all. I believe that in a spiritual sense we all connect as one. I would like to share my knowledge and experience of the power of spirituality, so that others can drink from the same cup. I always try and place the needs of others first and would like to encourage everyone to listen to their own soul for the direction which is hidden in their own wisdom. n Please see advert on page 65 for details of Barnham Spiritual Centre. THE sponsored walk which ended at Brighton Pier was 26 miles, “but felt more like 50.” (Photo: Eric Hossinger on Flickr) TV presenter ‘saw’ woman fall into river KNOWN to millions through television and radio, Fearne Cotton has revealed that she knew in advance a woman was going to fall into the River Thames. Fearne, who launched a hugely successful podcast called Happy Place, was walking along the river in London when she “sensed someone was about to fall in.” The former Top of the Pops presenter explained that a woman in a wheelchair accidentally toppled into the water and was hurriedly dragged out by her partner. The story is revealed in Fearne’s new book Bigger Than Us: The Power of Finding Meaning in a Messy World. “How on Earth had I picked up on this event ten minutes before it had even happened?” she asked. “There are too many variables for it to have been a coincidence.” The broadcaster also admitted that she talks to trees and objects, and recently spoke to a straggly conifer seeking permission before pruning it. “I asked it if it was OK to proceed and notified the tree it was in the name of growth,” she said. “There was no direct answer and one wasn’t really needed. “It was more a moment of respect and an attitude of humbleness to nature that I had previously overlooked.” Fearne’s affinity with the natural world extended to the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which she “spoke” to before FEARNE COTTON: “I choose to stay in the moment.” (Photo: Facebook) climbing it in 2009 for the charity Comic Relief. “Standing at its base I felt tiny and I knew I needed support from the mountain for the climb,” she explained. Now 40, Fearne found fame at an early age and started her broadcasting career at seventeen. She previously struggled with the eating disorder bulimia and has experienced anxiety attacks. Recently she was grief-stricken by the passing of her rescue cat Lula, a companion of twenty years. Discussing love, life and loss on her podcast, looking back on the past, Fearne commented: “I might have been called every name under the sun by strangers, been judged from a place of assumption, felt pure panic and a lack of safety being in the public eye, but I do not need to carry that around with me every day. “Today I choose to stay in the moment which is a feeling of gratitude for a lunch break walk in the sun! What a joy.” She concluded: “For those of you tackling hard stuff at the moment I send you love. From my own personal experience and from the plethora of individuals I’ve interviewed who have often been to hell and back, I know you’ll get through it. “It might be sticky, painful and soul destroying, but you will feel that sun on your face again one day. “I don’t want that to sound flippant or whimsical or to be triggering; I just believe it to be true.” Fearne has written a series of self-help books. In her latest, she states, “From intuition and energy to manifesting, ritual, prayer and signs, I have explored positive ideas and simple exercises that are available to every single one of us.” n PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 17 FEATURE Famed figures dictate spirit-inspired books Forget any bad weather in the UK, for we’re about to head off to Greece and meet Ioannis Kontodinas of the Spiritualist Society of Athens. The first point put to him was: “The internet says: ‘Greece is officially a secular state. However, its religious and social landscape is deeply influenced by the Greek Orthodox Church. “‘It is estimated that 98 per cent of the population identifies with the Greek Orthodox Christian faith.’ What does the church teach on mediumship and spirit communication?” THE official position of the Church today is against mediumship and spirit communication because it associates them with the negative side of Spiritualism and there have been various frauds throughout the years. This is true for most religions, not just Greek Orthodoxy. There are priests, however, who believe and practice Spiritualism individually outside the official line of the Church. It is also true that in the past, concepts such as spirit communication and reincarnation were essential in the Christian religion, but were later removed by Ecumenical Synods. If you stopped ten people in the street, do you think they would believe in life after death and making contact with the “dead”? Most people believe in survival after death and contacting spirit beings. Our religion primarily teaches about life after death, so people find it natural to accept that loved ones can contact them one way or another. For instance, it is common to hear individuals talking about dreams they had where a deceased person visited them, sometimes to convey a message. There are also other personal experiences that people cannot explain and often attribute them to the paranormal or the spirit world. Is there much coverage in the Greek media about mediumship and the paranormal? Not so much in mainstream Greek media, but it appears on individual websites and social media channels, etc. There are magazines on metaphysics 18 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 IOANNIS KONTODINAS: “Most people believe in survival after death.” and the paranormal, but the size of their circulation is unclear. Media coverage is still not widespread as in the UK. When was the Spiritualist Society of Athens founded? It was established in 1972 as a nonprofit organisation with a charter that contains its aims. It was founded by a group of 30 people who realised the importance and sacredness of the spirit messages which had been received. However, meetings and séances had been taking place since the 1950s. Medium Georgios Pisanis received spirit-inspired publications between the years 1961 to 1979. Of course, even though receiving these texts has been completed, contact with the spiritual world still provides guidance and support. What are the society’s main aims? Briefly, these are the publication and the worldwide spreading of the teachings which were transmitted by the Highest Authority in the spirit world. We also hold regular meetings for members to study and discuss these teachings for the enlightenment and selfcultivation on the destiny of man. Does the society have its own premises? If so, can you describe them? From member’s donations, we have acquired our own independent space. It is a ground floor of a building in the central Athens area. It contains a hall for meetings, an office, auxiliary and storage space, and a small, private courtyard. There is also space for underground parking. What kind of activities does the society organise? As mentioned before, there are weekly meetings for members to study and discuss the spirit-given texts. In addition, we participate in book fairs and exhibitions, mostly in Greece, but also abroad when the opportunity occurs. We also collaborate with various bookshops and other spiritual centres related to our philosophy and religion. Additionally, we have donated our translated publications to various prestigious places such as the British Library and the Library of Alexandria. Do you work full-time for the society or do you have another job? I have a full-time position as a physics teacher at a private school. Nobody works for the society professionally; we all contribute what we can on a voluntary basis. What’s your position within the society? I am currently the President of the Administrative Board. What began your interest in Spiritualism? It started at a very early age under the influence of my parents. I still remember being in elementary school and reading FEATURE books about Spiritualism and the spirit world, etc, that they brought home. We had frequent discussions about these subjects. For me to believe in the existence of a spirit world and reincarnation, etc, came naturally. Later in life, I had personal experiences that solidified these beliefs. For a while, I lived in the southwestern United States where I met people with similar interests and took courses in healing parallel to my studies. Returning to Greece, I became acquainted with a couple of mediums from a Spiritualist circle and finally discovered the Spiritualist Society of Athens and its teachings. Have you received good evidence through mediums? If so, can you describe a couple of examples? I’ve had much evidence, mostly from personal experience. For example, through my parents, I knew a powerful medium of a Spiritualist circle. They belonged to the medium’s circle. The medium had a very strong connection with my deceased brother, and we received many communications with him. Things were said that the medium could not have known. An impressive event was the following. One day, the medium visited us in our summerhouse where my father had a pair of binoculars. On that day, he dropped the binoculars, which shuttered into pieces. These were placed in a drawer. The medium had a vision of my brother and another entity working on them. Some time later, the binoculars were found intact in a drawer. This is just one example of material evidence for those who doubt such phenomena. I could go on and on. Nothing can be compared, though, to the impact that the spirit teachings I’ve already mentioned had on my spirit. The society publishes books said to be from various famous people such as Socrates, St John the Baptist, Goethe and Newton. How were these received? As mentioned, all the communications that constitute the teachings published by the society were transmitted through channelling by the Highest Authority to Georgios Pisanis. Apparently in full health, it is worth mentioning that Mr Pisanis passed on right after the teachings had ended. He received the messages in a circle comprised of a few people. In the beginning, he used a ouija board. Later on, Mr Pisanis wrote down the messages as he was receiving them. This method is explained in the communications. HERE is the entrance to the Spiritualist Society of Athens, which is based in the capital’s centre. How is it possible to confirm the identities of the famous people who communicated the books? Good question! To answer briefly, this is done through faith and the impact that the study of the texts has on our logic and the reasoning part of our spirit. I will try to be more specific, even though it is hard to explain something which is predominantly an esoteric experience. The study of these teachings reveals and confirms not only the authenticity of the source, but also the individuality of each teacher. There is a hierarchy in the structure of the heavenly kingdom. Spirit teachers and leaders hold certain positions, but also have specialties. For example, we published a two-volume book on medicine and communications transmitted by Hippocrates and other heavenly doctors. Others, like Socrates, have given teachings of a more philosophical nature, and still others about religion, mathematics, astronomy, music, etc. Sometimes they also talk about their earthly life, but the main point here is the individual revelation to the human spirit which comes from the study of these texts. I would like to end this answer with a teaser: in the texts, readers will find something really interesting about William Shakespeare. Are there many mediums in Greece? There are many clairvoyants who communicate details about personal matters, such as work issues, love affairs, good fortune, etc, but no more mediums of higher teachings. Likewise, are there many spiritual healers in Greece? There are a few, but it is hard to give an exact number because generally they do not advertise. Are public demonstrations of mediumship held in various parts of Greece, including on some of the islands? Probably not, but I really do not know. Do you ever invite mediums from the UK and other countries to work in Greece? We do not invite mediums to work in Greece. However, what I would like to stress is that we have travelled to London in particular, where we have been contacting the main Spiritualist societies in the UK for over 30 years. One of our publications, Incorruptible Discourses – The Echo, was transmitted especially for a British audience. Mention Greece to the average Briton, and they imagine sunbathing on a golden beach by a wonderfully blue sea with a bottle or two of chilled Retsina at hand. What’s it like living and working in Athens? It is true that people think of Greece as a holiday destination where they can relax, enjoy the sea, the sun, the food, etc. Athens is large and offers all the pleasures of a modern city, but is also close to the islands and the sea. One is surrounded by ancient history and can walk the streets where great minds lived and taught. There are monuments and places that constantly remind us of the different phases of our country’s civilisation from ancient Greece to Christianity. In a country with natural beauty and the enjoyable moments of a modern life, there comes a message for humanity to gradually awaken from its lethargy of purely material attractions to become more spiritually based on the values of pure Spiritualism. n For further details about the society, please see advert on page 66. PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 19 FEATURE Pop star now tunes in to tarot cards FORMER S Club 7 band member Paul Cattermole has tuned in to a new career as a psychic and clairvoyant. On the spiritual marketplace website Ask the Answer Paul states, “I channel messages from Spirit, Source, The Ether, The Universe and beyond into the multiverse.” Paul, 44, found fame as a pop singer, but quit S Club 7 in 2002. His stage career ended in 2017 when he injured his back during a tour of The Rocky Horror Show, in which he played the dual roles of Eddie, the victim of alien transvestite scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter, and also hero Brad’s teacher, Dr Scott. The following year he was forced to sell his BRIT music award on eBay to make ends meet. Last November, Paul created a YouTube channel called Tarot me this, on which the “Psychic wizard” gives collective general tarot readings and predictions linked to astrology. He told Charlotte Oliver of Heat magazine: “You have to connect with the energies out there in the ether. Absolutely nothing happens by coincidence. When you think it’s a coincidence, it’s the universe speaking.” Paul revealed that he first picked up tarot cards 22 years ago, but his skill only came to fruition in 2020 after he enrolled PAUL CATTERMOLE: “I channel messages from Spirit.” (Photo: Facebook) at The Spiritual Studio in London. “When lockdown started, I started thinking, ‘What can I do to help?’” he said. “Lots of people need guidance, and tarot gives that.” Ms Oliver wrote: “According to Paul, he’s always been hyper-intuitive. Before S Club 7 found success, he says he just knew they’d top the charts. “But back then, it wasn’t something he could switch off and on – and he was afraid that ‘people might think I was crazy.’ “Then, ten years ago, he started meditating, which he says unlocked the door to a wealth of untapped knowledge.” “It helped me know how to really get there, sometimes in just two or three breaths,” said Paul. “Through that, I was able to start giving people information and predictions.” The Spiritual Studio says it offers the UK’s only “Telephone Tarot Reading Accredited and Approved Training” for those who are “short on time, but need the very best start to a new career as a psychic telephone agent.” The course taught Paul to read tarot cards professionally, but he also learnt how to tap into his psychic abilities, honing his clairvoyance and psychometry. Paul’s page on Ask the Answer carries a five-star rating. He states: “I am well equipped to give readings with just intuition and channelling messages from Spirit alone without any tools, but I can use a variety of tools if requested (Angel cards, crystals, dice, etc). “I am very lucky to have the gift of spiritual healing. It would be my pleasure to give you spiritual guidance or just straight up advice. “My predictions can be incredibly insightful. I have an innate sense of what makes people tick. I can also offer compassion, empathy and care for all sorts of situations.” n Leading zoologist was sacked for believing in Nessie RECENTLY released documents by London’s Natural History Museum have revealed that a leading zoologist was sacked for believing in the Loch Ness monster. Dr Denys Tucker served as a pilot in the Second World War. In 1949, he joined the museum as a scientific officer in the department of zoology. Eight years later, he became a principal scientific officer. In 1960, when aged 39, he was sacked for alleged insubordination, which, said Daily Mail journalist Carlos Alba, “stunned colleagues and sparked decades of speculation over his beliefs about Loch Ness. “The newly uncovered documents, from the museum’s board of trustees, reinforce the view that his dismissal was down to his belief in the creature rather than concerns about his professional behaviour. “The ignominy of the sacking ensured he never worked again in a senior academic post.” Just months before, in New Scientist Dr Tucker wrote of his belief in the monster, which he maintained was a plesiosaur, a 20 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 reptile thought to have been extinct for 70 million years. By then, thousands of people claimed to have seen Nessie. “The documents from the board of trustees have now revealed the level of paranoia among senior figures at the museum who feared potential reputational damage if it was perceived to be taking the monster’s existence seriously,” Mr Alba wrote. A memo issued to staff by the board in 1959 warned: “The trustees wish it to be known that they do not approve of the spending of official time or official leave on the so-called Loch Ness Phenomenon. “If, as a result of the activities of members of the staff, the museum is involved in undesirable publicity, [the trustees] will be gravely displeased.” The official reason for Dr Tucker’s dismissal was given as “continued, vexatious, insubordinate and generally offensive conduct towards the museum’s director and other senior staff.” Records also reveal that Dr Tucker tried to win funding from the Royal Society for a scientific project, but he failed to get an interview. In a newspaper cutting from the time, held in the museum’s archive, he is quoted as saying: “I put the project up to the Natural History Museum. The museum does send out expeditions to collect specimens. But they didn’t like the idea of a Loch Ness expedition at all. “They refused me leave to lecture on the subject. Since I was sacked, they have banned me from the library. “I had an international reputation as a zoologist. Now I’m like a struck off lawyer.” Dr Tucker later embarked on an unsuccessful legal battle against the museum to be reinstated. This included launching a case against Lord Fisher of Lambeth, the leader of the trustees, who was then Archbishop of Canterbury. n PSYCHIC NEWS: To Subscribe or Advertise visit: www.psychicnews.org.uk or call: 01376 563091 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 21 FEATURE Grasp the nettle and forage for food By Jo Dunbar A medical herbalist since 1999, Jo Dunbar is the author of the national prize-winning book “The Spirit of the Hedgerow.” The founder of Botanica Medica Herbal Apothecary, it was through growing and collecting herbs that Jo developed a personal relationship with plants and trees. This love of nature also led her to follow the Druidic path, honouring all life forms on Earth as well as the cycles of the year. Jo grew up in South Africa where she first studied horticulture and worked with the Xhosa men, an ethnic group who taught her about indigenous plants and how they are used magically and medically. Giants and dragons were real to these folk. After all, everyone had seen the firedrakes flying across the starry skies from time to time. Today we call them comets. Certain wells or pits were thought to be the lairs of these fearful dragon or wyrms and to this day some places bear witness. At Dragon Hill, Uffington, Oxfordshire, locals still debate whether the ancient chalk engraving into the hill represents a dragon rather than a stylised white horse. In the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon eras, the collective mindset was animistic and magical. People believed in faeries and elves, not the small winged creatures of Victorian fairy tales, but a race who lived mostly unseen alongside ours. Elf beings could be smaller than us or taller and may be as likely to bestow favours on a homestead as to cause terrible mischief. They had to be constantly placated. They were known as “the fair folk,” “the little people” or ”the gentry,” and were sturdily believed in by country folk even up until the last century. In ancient times, disease and discontent was believed to be caused by dark magic. Not only did the hedgerow protect by forming a physical barrier against the forest, but its plants were used as antidotes to malevolent magic. These folk had relationships with plants which are very rare these days, believing that all natural things – plants, animals, mountains and rivers – have spirits that can influence human events. Hedgerow plants in particular had benevolent magical properties and so were deeply respected. The herbs were seen as powerful beings, to be honoured and harvested with great dedication for they were the food and medicine of the people. Even not long ago, long dark winters meant starvation for many. By the time early spring came around, the food stores and strength of the people could be at a low ebb. Living close to the Earth, they would observe that soon after the winter solstice there was a powerful upsurge of energy that renewed the land with vigorous life. Both practically and magically, this new life force was very welcome. In eating these green shoots, the people were imbibing vitamins and mineral-rich, blood-cleansing nature. Their own vigour would rise like the sap in the trees, bringing renewed vitality for the busy months ahead. Wild garlic and nettles were a special part of these early spring feasts, washed down with refreshing birch wine. THE leaves and flowers of wild garlic “are absolutely delicious.” Wild garlic (Allium ursinum) This is one of the great treats of springtime, rather like asparagus but wild, making it all the more fun as you harvest your own. It is very easy to find – just look for an old, undisturbed woodland then follow your nose. The flowers in April open, releasing such a pungent garlic odour that you can even smell it as you drive past. This plant is an excellent respiratory disinfectant used to treat mild chest and sinus infections and coughs. It can also treat dysbiosis, an overgrowth of the unfriendly bacteria or yeast in the gut and one of the main causes of bloating, gas and fermentation. The leaves and flowers kill threadworms. When medicating yourself, “Let food be your medicine, and medicine your food.” In other words, eat a lot of it – unless you are taking blood-thinning medication, since wild garlic can also thin the blood. The leaves and flowers are absolutely delicious, adding a pungency to salads or when sprinkled over new potatoes with olive oil and chopped olives. The leaves can be turned into pesto, eaten with a chicken, and a mayonnaise or cheese and tomato sandwich or crushed with butter and melted into a jacket potato. Modern chefs are falling over themselves to offer us new and exciting wild recipes. I made a smooth green wild garlic and potato soup in chicken stock enriched with double cream and eaten with crusty bread. Forest floor pesto A BLENDER makes easy work of forest floor pesto. (Photo: Cayobo on Flickr) Wash a handful of freshly picked wild garlic leaves and pat them dry. You need three tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese, three tablespoons of walnuts and one cup of extra virgin olive oil. Roughly chop the wild garlic leaves then add to the blender with the olive oil and pine nuts. Whizz in a blender to the consistency of your choice, and then stir in the Parmesan cheese and pine nuts. This pesto is delicious with grilled or roasted lamb, chicken, salmon or pasta with fresh cherry tomatoes. A word of caution: please make absolutely sure that you are harvesting the correct plant. Wild garlic looks very similar to Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis), which affects the heart. PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 23 FEATURE WHEN the Romans first invaded Britain, they cooked nettles in oil and rubbed it on their bodies to ward off the cold. Nettles (Urtica dioica) Few of us have not been stung by nettles so, of course, most people are unenthusiastic when I invite them to stroke a nettle leaf with their bare hands. However, if you approach the nettles in a friendly manner and pick the leaf firmly, once captured it can be stroked like a pet and won’t sting. Indeed, it is the sting that has made the nettle so valuable in herbal medicine. When the Romans first invaded Britain, they found this island very cold, so they cooked nettles in oil and rubbed this oil on their bodies to ward off the cold, dilating the blood vessels and warming the muscles. Local folk already knew that flogging their arthritic limbs with fresh nettles caused a flush of circulation. The needles of the nettle inject formic acid and histamine into the skin, bringing a flow of fresh blood to the site that washes away accumulated toxins such as uric acid crystals. Nettles are also blood-cleansers, and a nice cup of nettle tea will also wash away the toxic accumulations, but without the pain. Why pay for nettle teabags when you could cultivate a small patch in the garden and make your own? Simply pick a sprig of nettles and drop it into a cup of boiling water with a few slices of ginger, lemon and honey to taste. Nettle soup is also a wonderful way to celebrate spring, especially when enjoyed with crusty bread and butter. In Italy they make nettle ravioli and nettle pesto. 24 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 The simplest way to eat nettles is to steam the leaves and add a little butter to eat as you would spinach. They taste delicious, with a strangely furry texture, but only use young, fresh tips because once they turn to flower they become a bit unpleasant. Why eat nettles? They are very rich in minerals such as iron and silica, and in or silica deficiency. Stress and a poor diet, both quite common in these fast-paced times, can also lead to falling hair, which feels disastrous for a woman. As nettle tops are rich in minerals, if you want your hair to grow like weeds, then you could make a weedy hair tonic for yourself. I have found this tremendously successful in restoring hair growth, taken either as a juice or as a tea or tincture. The simplest method is to pick a sprig of nettles, add another sprig of rosemary (but not if you are prone to epilepsy), drop these in a cup with some honey and lemon to taste, and add boiling water. Drink this three times a day and in time you will be thrilled at your beautiful, abundant and strong hair. Weedy hair tonic NETTLE tea will replenish the blood with iron. vitamin K, which is essential to help blood clotting and to stop internal bleeding. This is particularly helpful for women who suffer from very heavy periods. Regular nettle tea will restrict the excessive bleeding as well as replenish the blood with iron, thereby helping to prevent anaemia. Have you heard the saying, “Hair that grows like weeds”? Alopecia (hair loss) has several causes, but a major one can be iron Pick a large handful of nettles, and boil in a pot of water for three minutes. When cool, strain into a jug and add a tablespoon of white wine vinegar. Pour this mixture over your head every day. Do not wash out. Your hair should grow thick and strong, and the vinegar will make it soft and glossy. This can be further enhanced by drinking nettle tea daily. Nettles also have an antihistaminic effect. I commonly employ them every summer to help those suffering from hay fever, combining nettles with ribwort (Plantago lanceolata) and elder flowers (Sambucus nigra). Every part of the nettle plant is useful medically. For example, the root helps men with the symptoms of an enlarged prostate FEATURE gland, significantly reducing night-time urination and allowing urine to pass more easily and comfortably. The men I have treated with nettle root remain comfortable with their herbal prescription for years, avoiding a rather unpleasant operation. One of the lesser-known therapeutic parts of the plant is the seeds. There is an old story about an unscrupulous horse dealer who fed up an old nag with nettle seeds and oats for a few weeks, whereupon the horse was soon looking glossy and splendid enough to be sold for a bag of coins. However, once back on a diet of grass, the beautiful horse reverted, as though by black magic, to an old nag, by which time the horse trader had moved on. Oddly, the story continues. A doctor at a care home for the elderly heard this sorry tale and instructed the staff to add nettle seeds to the residents’ porridge. Sure enough, they soon all became alert and lusty. The alertness would have been due to the essential fatty acids in the seeds, known to enhance brain function. I don’t know why they became lusty… Daisy (Bellis perennis) There is an old saying that “When you can put your foot on seven daisies then spring has come.” The dear little lawn daisy has long been ignored as a medicine, but its older names – Bruisewort or Poor man’s Arnica – tell us that it once had a place of importance in its relationship with the common man. Its name comes from “Day’s-Eye,” referring to the way daisies seem to gaze adoringly at the sun as it moves across the sky during the day. When the sun sets or clouds cover the sun, they close their petals and bow their heads. Lawn daisy foot bath or poultice for sprains and bruises Simply gather a handful of daisies and drop them into a teapot of boiling water. After ten minutes, add this tea to a foot bath of tepid water and immerse your sprained foot into the water for about twenty minutes. A daisy poultice can be made to treat bruises on less convenient body parts. Use a saucepan instead of the teapot then take the hot daisies out and place them on a clean piece of muslin, wrapping it roughly into a square shape. Now dip the poultice into the daisy infusion in the saucepan, squeezing until it no longer drips; apply it to the bruised area for several minutes and then re-immerse it in the warm water. This should be done several times throughout the day, but the speed at which the swelling reduces will be impressive. By the way, there’s an environmental point to this. Why use very expensive Arnica, a plant that grows in the delicate ecosystems of the high Alps and is an endangered species? It makes far more sense to use our own little Bellis perennis, which thrives abundantly in our lawns. Cowslips (Primula veris) Around the spring equinox, cheerful cowslips begin to unfurl their pale yellow flower stalks through the grasses in our meadows and on our river banks. These flowers were once abundant, but are not so easily found nowadays, perhaps because too many were brought into homes for the joy of seeing colour at last after the long dark winters. However, perhaps it was the very popular and slightly narcotic cowslip wine that resulted in their decline. These days, cowslips are protected by law, but in ancient times the flowers were believed to be guarded by magical creatures and dedicated to the Norse goddess Freya, the goddess of love, beauty and war. Did the goddess use these flowers as part of her beauty regime? Certainly it has been well known by mortal women that an ointment of the flowers and leaves will restore lost beauty and remove wrinkles. Cowslips are gently sedative too. In the old days, herbalists used their flowers to calm “the phrensies” and ease paralytic ailments, hence its old name Palsy Wort. When wild harvesting herbs, please be aware that the land may belong to someone and it might not be legal to collect certain plants. Given this, once you are certain that you are harvesting the correct plant, please do so with consideration for the plants themselves. Only collect a little, so that your enjoyment of the plant does not negatively impact the survival of the plant population. Shamans and herbalists always ask a plant’s permission to collect its leaves, bark or roots and leave a gift in exchange. If you think that’s odd, then simply silently thank the plant as a token of respect towards a living being that is donating some of its body parts for your food or healing. The plants described here are often despised as “weeds” these days because we have become alienated from the natural world. I invite you to re-enchant your life by stepping back into our ancient animistic consciousness and the magic of the hedgerow. n “The Spirit of the Hedgerow” is published by Local Legend. With all those metaphors of wings and rising up, it’s easy to think this means pulling ourselves away from the physical, and that in order to have a greater spiritual connection we must somehow lessen our connection to the Earth. But in truth nothing could be more wrong – or in fact more dangerous. Just look at the state of our world right now – at the damage that has been done to our planet, our fellow humans and other species by those so intent on enforcing their own spiritual beliefs and the rules they claim will support spiritual progress that they continually choose destruction over love and care of others. We can sit on a meditation mat or connect with our interpretation of the Divine for as long as we want to, but until we put those love-filled vibrations into practice, we will only ever be spiritually bypassing what is happening in front of our eyes. I’ve practised as a medium for almost all of my adult life while calling myself a practising witch for over a decade of that time, and can honestly say that the more I’ve leaned into the nature-based side of my own beliefs and practice, the more I’ve opened up and the more my connection to spirit has expanded. In fact, I often say that the awakening which most deeply influenced my connection wasn’t a spiritual one, but a physical one – the experience that brought my brain and heart firmly back into my body and this beautiful planet we call home. It was an awakening that connected me to the ancestors that had walked these lands before me, to the elemental and spiritual beings that guard it still, and to the plants and animals which share this beautiful natural ecosystem with me. Equally, it was an awakening which forced me to look ahead to the future and reminded me that whatever my own purpose here, in many ways the role of all of us is to create the kind of legacy that supports those who follow us. After all, what is the point of a spiritual awakening if not to remind us that we’re part of something bigger and all have a role to play in supporting that? But maybe that shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, how can we ever truly embrace the power, beauty and wisdom of our souls and the spirit energies we connect with 26 PSYCHIC PSYCHICNEWS NEWS || MARCH 2022 2022 FEATURE FEATURE TREES “cannot grow tall and sturdy enough to truly take their place in the forest unless they also root deeply enough to stay standing during even the strongest of winds.” unless we embody those into the here and now on the physical plane? Think about a lightning conductor rod and how it can’t channel or conduct energy from the skies safely to where it is needed most without that energy first going deep into the ground. Consider also the great and protective trees that are often the very embodiment of Earth’s energy for us. They cannot grow tall and sturdy enough to truly take their place in the forest unless they also root deeply enough to stay standing during even the strongest of winds. The Wall Street Journal bestselling author Meggan Watterson regularly reminds us that the body is our soul’s chance to be here – to experience life, to gain the experiences our souls need to grow and to effect change in the universe. What is Earth but a bigger version of that same sentiment? It’s our home for this life, our base for this connection and a key element to the power of being a soulfully embodied human. So what does it mean to connect more deeply with Earth? It can start as simply as all the things we have heard about so many times before – hugging trees, standing barefoot on the Earth and taking nature walks during which we fully embrace the sounds, sights and feelings of the world around us. But we can also take it much further. As a practising witch, I honour Earth and all things natural as completely sacred, celebrating each solstice and equinox to mark the turning of the seasons throughout the year. Around the world others who follow animist and nature-based belief systems follow a variety of other practices and traditions all aimed at honouring and connecting more deeply with nature and our planet. More recently, I’ve also been working hard with the energies under the surface of our planet, supporting Earth by tuning into the grids of energy that not only help her to survive no matter what is thrown at her, but which, in turn, support us and the other members of this global ecosystem of ours. Think about that grid as the circulatory system of the Earth and the way that not only energy runs through and across the whole planet, but also the wisdom and insight that has been collected throughout CERYN ROWNTREE: “I honour Earth and all things natural as completely sacred.” history and is held within the Earth which is shared and moved around. As with so much that is visible to us in the outer world, over the past few centuries those energy grids have become polluted both physically and energetically by chemicals, by the negative energy as we have battled against and harmed one another and by so much more besides. By connecting into that energy grid, we are able to send healing directly into it and so into the Earth too, supporting our planet to heal where she has been damaged and to thrive where she otherwise may struggle. When we do that, we benefit too. And not only us as humans, for we create benefits for everyone and everything who calls this planet home and is so dependent on her health for their survival. But there are other benefits to this deep Earth connection and healing too. As we connect into those inner Earth grids specifically from a place of offering healing and support, we find ourselves connecting not only to the energy that is held there, but to the wisdom too. Within those grids is the insight and support of our ancestors – not only personally, but collectively as humans and as citizens of the Earth. As we focus our minds and our hearts on that energy, we begin to tangibly feel that support and access that insight within ourselves and our own lives too. I am part of Project Earthwork. This comprises a group of individuals who gather together each month to offer free Earth connection and meditation sessions PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 202227 27 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 FEATURE to people all around the planet. We have run these sessions for just over a year. The insight that has come through to us – as well as the change we have felt in our own energy and that of the Earth – has been mind-blowing. Since the start of that work, I’ve found my own spiritual connection deepening more than I had ever thought possible. Additionally, I’ve found my spiritual work taking on a much deeper purpose for both me and my clients in terms of the insights that are shared and where they lead us. With that in mind, I thought that a useful way to close this article might be with words which came not from me but from the planet itself when Gaia stepped through with a channelled message to share in our February Project Earthwork session. It reads: I am Gaia. I run through every cell of this planet. Every being who works, who breeds, who treads here does so in my name and with my support is nurtured in every step by the Great Mother of All. Gaia was always intended to be the mother of this universe; that as the beings came from the stars around us, they came here to be held. But this was never a journey you were intended to take alone. It was a journey for which I was only too willing to embrace you, for that is the job of a mother and the agreement a mother makes. There are those who have long taken this for granted and do not recognise that at some point, a mother’s love must be reciprocated with respect, honour and care. I thank you for stepping out and returning back to the embrace of my heart, back to the warmth of my arms. For this is what I long for – to hold and to love beings of this Earth, the beings of my own space. It is said by many that the journey here and to Earth is a difficult one. That is in many ways the case, but do not feel that Earth was intended as a punishment. Do not feel that a life here on Earth was all to be challenge. Life here on Earth is an opportunity for great beauty, a great connection as I connect with you, you with me, each of you with one another and with so many other beings. It is this connection which is the true meaning of life upon this planet; a connection I embrace with every ounce of my own being and one which I call you to embrace also. Look to the earth beneath your feet: the way that the plants grow to nourish, to support, to share the very oxygen that you require to live. Look to the rains that fall and how they hydrate the greenery around you and you yourself. Look to the animals and to how they look to you. We are as one, all of us together in a network, a symbiosis that relies on one another to survive to thrive. And the time is now here for us to thrive. There are those who believe that the time is upon us for our very existence to come to an end. I understand their fear. I feel it in my heart. But that is not the case. Our dawning is upon us; our thriving is upon us. We celebrate this time as we move into a place of togetherness and of love. May you remember that as you are held on the surface of my very essence. Remember that there is always a place for you also in my heart. Remember that I will always hold you, as closely as you need it and as firmly as it is required. I am always there. I am waiting for you to reach out as any mother. I am waiting, always giving you my love, ever waiting to be asked for support and wisdom. I am here for you, as you are. Step forward Pippa Neve, who, in this specially commissioned feature, gives valuable advice on coping with grief. Experienced and highly intuitive, Pippa has a true affinity in understanding emotions and is passionate about the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of her clients. Originally from the UK, Pippa now runs a thriving healing practice in Sydney’s Inner West, Australia. She also works with international clients online via Zoom or distant healing, many of whom followed Pippa from her previous practice in the UK. Pippa was a healer at Paul’s Cancer Support Centre in London, working with patients and their families to provide much-needed emotional and spiritual support. I HAVE been sitting with my thoughts around grief for quite some time after the fairly recent passing of my mother, having found that it uncovered a whole myriad of layers and emotions that were both subtly and yet distinctly different to the feelings I experienced around my father’s death seven years ago. I found it to be a nuanced web, with interconnecting threads that stretch all the way back through my ancestral lines and emotions which affects each one of us differently, and can change and fluctuate on a daily or even hourly basis. What is grief? We all experience times of unavoidable stress, loss or sadness, but the first thing to say around the subject of grief is that there really is no rule book or prescriptive manual when it comes to dealing with it and it’s important to understand that it can be different for each and every one of us. It has, however, brought me comfort to look at what grief actually is. To my mind it is this: a powerful myriad of emotions and 30 PSYCHIC PSYCHICNEWS NEWS || MARCH 2022 2022 physical reactions to the loss of someone or something we value. Grief can be losing a person due to death, a reaction to the breaking up of a relationship, losing your job or even mourning the loss of hopes and dreams for our future. All of these seem to weave through several stages and can require us to reach out for a little help to move through what can feel like such overwhelming emotions in a safe and supported way and come out the other side. Within my practice, I feel it’s of the utmost importance to create a secure and nurturing environment for clients who have experienced loss in all shapes and forms. Swiss-American psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross suggests that there are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. However, David Kessler, who worked with Elisabeth, suggests that there is a sixth stage – meaning. PIPPA NEVE: “Be gentle with yourself.” The stages of grief As a healing practitioner, “Be gentle with yourself” is the first piece of advice I give to anyone who is enmeshed within grief (whether that’s a client or a friend). It is advice that I’ve had to feel into and follow myself since my mother passed away. The stages of grief aren’t always linear. Neither do they necessarily emerge one at a time. Sometimes coming in waves, grief can leave us feeling overwhelmed, lost and alone; we need to be able to allow ourselves to move through at our own pace and often need some support. The various stages of grief can be identified as initially experiencing shock, denial or disbelief, which is then followed by pain, anger and bargaining, sadness and reflection, and perhaps even guilt and loneliness. It’s only after these emotions are felt that there emerges a chink of light – a sense of moving through the darkness in the form of release, resolution and finally acceptance and hope. FEATURE FEATURE As I touched upon earlier, there is no rulebook in the form of right or wrong with any of this. The important thing is to be gentle with yourself and reach out for help when you need it. When we look deeper at this initial stage of shock, denial and/or disbelief, we can see that these feelings arise as much due to the cause of death as the death itself, and we need time to process not only the news, but the finality of the situation. After this, the pain of our loss takes hold and we truly dive into the process of grief – or rather, we are thrown into it. This is when anger can rise up within us and we begin to bargain: the “What ifs,” the regrets and so forth, which can in turn lead to depression. In going to the heart of understanding denial, I would suggest that it is part of the process of coming to terms with our loss, particularly if a loved one dies suddenly or their life was cut short unexpectedly. It may initially feel insurmountable, but slowly the process of understanding means we are able to come to terms with the situation. When my father had a tragic accident which caused him to be airlifted to hospital, I was lucky enough to be with him. He was already in a coma on arrival, but I knew he would still be able to hear me. I was quickly told that it wouldn’t be long, not even long enough for my brother to say his goodbyes. As I chatted to my father, I placed one hand on his heart centre and held his hand in my other. I told him I loved him and that I knew he loved me. I also told him I forgave him for any wrongdoings and asked him for his forgiveness, pointing out that we’d always done our best. I knew my father didn’t believe that the soul moves on, but reminded him that he had promised to keep an open mind as to what to expect. I then began to list all those that he loved whom I knew to be in Spirit or those that I thought might be. As I did so, I felt my father begin to lift out of his body. He passed over shortly afterwards. The experience has given me so much comfort, despite the shock I felt at the time. I still remember the whole experience so clearly as if it were yesterday. Anger It’s very important to highlight that anger is often a key player when we lose someone we love. Again, spiritual healing helps us move through each stage of the grieving process. When we first hear the news, it can be such a shock that we energetically come out of our physical body; we may not want to be in our body because the news is quite simply too huge for the conscious mind to bear. Spiritual healing brings us back into the vessel of the body because it grounds and centres us. It also enables us to be held in loving energy as we come to terms with our loss and as we move through grief in our own way, being supported by someone who understands the process, thereby helping to ease the pain. Acceptance and meaning When we lose a loved one, there are often practical matters and arrangements which need to be overseen – not just a form I found myself mourning the mother I would have liked her to have been: a warm, loving, caring mother, and then began to be able to allow myself to admit to myself that she had sometimes been emotionally very cruel. I realised that I would never have dared allow myself to think this way while she was still alive, but I knew it to be true. As I sat with it, in truth, it began to resonate through me. Naturally, this felt very uncomfortable to begin with because I felt guilty for thinking such thoughts, but when I gave myself permission to accept it, I began to feel calmer. I began to let go of the old pains and hurts that I had struggled to release before. Quite remarkably, I began to feel lighter and started to be lighter. Moving through this process, I was able to find an even deeper degree of compassion and empathy for those who turn to me for support when they are experiencing grief. It enables me to hold space for them to heal and move through it in a nourishing and sensitive way. Allowing yourself to feel WHEN grieving, “Give yourself permission to feel the whole gamut of emotions.” of gathering, but the legal, financial and practical side of things. As we grieve, this can all be extremely overwhelming. Healing can support us emotionally as we work through everything which has to be organised. All that needs to be faced until we are able to not just accept, but as David Kessler suggests, make meaning of our loss. Holding our loved ones in our hearts, feeling them with us as we move through our lives, smiling as we remember them, feeling the love that we shared and knowing that it is real are all beautiful and poignant ways of finding a sense of meaning entrenched within the sadness of loss. When I think about the stage of acceptance, I can’t help but recall my relationship with my late mother. I loved her dearly, but it certainly wasn’t always the easiest of relationships. After her death, as we were making all the necessary arrangements, I was on an emotional rollercoaster. There were days when I cried and those when I was also very angry. My final thoughts on grief when it comes to the death of a person are these: for those of us who lose a loving, kind person, we grieve their loss. However, for those of us who grieve for someone with whom we had a difficult relationship, it can be more challenging. We mourn the person we would have liked them to have been or maybe we mourn the fact that we no longer have the opportunity to tell them how we feel – the good, the bad and the ugly. Give yourself permission to feel the whole gamut of emotions that you feel; allow yourself to feel the things you perhaps think you shouldn’t be feeling. It’s all okay – feel your feelings. Let them pass. Let them go. All is well. How to cope with the loss of a much-loved pet For many of us, our pets are much-loved family members, so much so that some of us refer to them as our “fur babies.” It’s my firm belief that grieving for our pets is no different from grieving for anyone we have loved and lost. My dog stole my heart within moments of our meeting. I fret when she is unwell, so know that I will be devastated when the time comes for her to pass over. However, I also know that if my husband and I have to make the decision for her to be put down, as hard as it would be, we wouldn’t want her to suffer or be in pain any longer than needs be. Other than this, I would suggest that the PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 202231 31 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 FEATURE grief is the same; there are no rules, but we need to allow ourselves to feel our feelings with the loss and grieve in whatever way helps to ease the pain of it until we can smile once again, remembering all the joy they have given us. What I find beautiful is the belief shared by many that our pets come to us to heal our hearts, helping us to give and receive love unconditionally. Just like our human loved ones, we can feel their presence around us after they have passed. We can also give our pets healing, channelling energy to ease their suffering and help them on their journey to the Other Side. Love, after all, is the greatest healer there is. I also recommend that after the sadness and shock of losing a much-loved pet, healing for the person suffering the loss can be a great comfort. – and especially to have someone beside you to help ease the sense of loss. Grief is a very individual experience, so each situation is different. Speaking as an accredited spiritual healer, my primary focus is to work with my client’s energy. Firstly, I work with someone who is grieving the approaching end of their life to help them to ground and centre, bringing them back into their physical body because this makes it easier to focus on decisions that need to be made. Secondly, I work with them to heal their fear, assisting them with being able to die both free from pain and free from that fear, so that they are hopefully able to pass on with a smile. In helping those grieving the loss of a loved one, again, firstly I work to ground and centre them, but also assist them through their grief as they come to terms What is a grief doula? A grief doula (also known as a soul midwife) provides support, comfort and guidance where needed both for the dying and their family. This can include offering assistance and guidance as the person who is transitioning to their passing moves through their end-of-life care and through their death, and in supporting the family through their subsequent bereavement. Understandably, many people are afraid of death and dying, and a grief doula is there to hold space as they come to terms with their diagnosis and all that it entails. In terms of looking after the family, a grief doula is someone who holds space for a person going through the process of grief, to guide and support them through the emotional minefield that inevitably comes with losing a loved one. How does a grief doula or a spiritual healer help someone who is dying or grieving? The initial news that someone is dying can be the most tremendous shock, so many people need to process this themselves before they feel able to inform their loved ones. Holding space as the dying come to terms with nearing the end of their life is an absolute honour. It can entail assisting with practical matters such as arrangements that need to be made. More importantly, it involves dealing with the person’s own fears as well as those of their family. Grief is a very personal journey; there are no rules and people react differently, as I’ve mentioned. It’s perfectly normal to want to feel held and supported through this journey, to have help with easing the pain and any sense of guilt and/or blame that might arise 32 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 SPIRITUAL healing “is a wonderful tool to help people come to terms with their loss.” with the physical loss of losing a loved one. This involves helping them to understand that although they have lost the physical presence of the person, their loved one is still with them. One of the things I remind my clients of is that their loved one will always be in their heart. Once the pain has eased, they will be able to remember shared experiences with joy, even beginning to smile each time they think of them and holding a steadfast inner knowing that they are continually loved and supported – essentially trusting that the loving connection is still there. As illustrated by sharing my own experiences with my mother’s passing, it can be more difficult if there has not been a positive relationship with the person who has died. In this case, we often need to allow ourselves time to grieve the person we wanted them to be, allowing the pain, anger and hurt to be dissolved as we learn to accept the sense of incompletion. It is a case of needing to grieve the fact that there is no longer the option of one day confronting that person for their wrongdoings and moving through the waves of emotions, good and bad, in order to ultimately be able to move forwards free from past pains and hurts. Do grief doulas and spiritual healers recommend various ways to grieve? Different doulas and healers offer differing tools and techniques to deal with grief and should align with the client with whom they are working. Journalling is a wonderful way to allow emotions to flow and to be able to let them go, but some people prefer to be able to speak to someone, whether one-to-one or in a group. In joining a grief group, people feel understood by those around them and can often open up as they hear other people’s journeys and experiences, being able to acknowledge their own feelings more easily as they recognise them in others. I would also recommend walks in nature and meditation as two excellent tools to help clear the mind and gain clarity. Being a healer myself, I offer guided meditations and work energetically with my clients to help them with grief. All of my meditations are written with the aim of assisting my clients to be able to connect deep within, where they are able to come to terms with their sense of loss and to begin to find a positive way to move forwards once again. How can you find the right grief doula or spiritual healer for you? There are lots of support groups and practitioners operating online, particularly since the pandemic started, as so many more people are experiencing a sense of loss – especially those who have been unable to be with their loved ones as they passed over. It’s always very important to find someone that you trust, someone you feel safe with, so you can truly open up and communicate how you’re feeling. It is also vital to find a person that holds space as you move through the journey of grief, so you feel safe as you work through your emotions. Overall, I have come to realise that spiritual healing is a wonderful tool to help people come to terms with their loss, helping them to make sense of the incomprehensible and assisting them to move through these layers of grief whilst feeling supported, enabling them to move through release and resolution – or put another way – come to a state of acceptance and even hope. n Want to know more? Benefit: Improved energy levels Reducing external noise from your daily life can help to declutter your busy mind and bring peace into your day. Benefit: Playful and spontaneous reactions We can be bound by limiting beliefs from our upbringing, teachings and our own belief system as well as societal beliefs. GO for a walk “somewhere which lifts your spirits and talk to the nature around you.” if you stay true to your values and catch yourself each time you are repeating an old binding pattern. For example, when I was at the start of this process, I had to trust that going out for a walk was more beneficial to my mental health as opposed to sitting and worrying where my next client would come from. It helped me to invite in more play into my day and then life started to become full of spontaneous memorable moments. Activating you into action. Here is a list of “pattern interrupters” for you to start making way for more spontaneous play: • Spend time in nature. Go for a walk somewhere which lifts your spirits and talk to the nature around you. Breathe in the sounds, and fill your lungs with fresh free air. • Dance to your favourite song. If you are feeling really stuck, then start by stamping your feet to the song. • Next, close your eyes and get more into the rhythm of the music. Dance as if no one is watching – it’s so refreshing. • Full moon bath. Bask in the beauty of the moon and all its gentle and kind energy. Make this experience even more luxurious by listening to some gorgeous sound bowls, which will heal and light you up even more. • Mindful eating. Cook with a new ingredient. Find a recipe you know well and then add a new ingredient. Invite friends over if you are feeling sociable and get them to see if they can taste the new secret ingredient. Top tip number three. As you begin to create sustainable self-care rituals and attract your soul-led community, you begin to feel better, build better relationship and flourish within your business or work. The change-makers within our field are now working together to pioneer nonlinear leadership. Together we begin to offer each other strength and guidance to bridge the gap between the old and new ways. Finally, we feel at home and comfortable in our own skin to show up daily as a mystic in a modern-day world. One final self-care ritual for you to try Let’s get your co-creative collective started with a letter of love. This letter would be like writing to your oldest, trusted friend. It’s someone who you miss with all your heart. Without them, you feel incomplete, a person who also activates you in a fierce and raw way to keep trusting the incredible individual that you are. Sonja is both Native American and Norwegian, and was featured on “Feel Good Factor TV.” She can be seen on Gaia TV’s “Great Minds,” “Ancient Civilizations” and “Inspirations,” and “ Beyond Belief” with American presenter George Noory. Sonja’s books “Spirit Traveler” and “Dancing with Raven and Bear” were the winners of the Beverly Hills Book Awards. “Become an Earth Angel” is the basis of her Earth Angel Training Course. Sonja’s new oracle, “Odin and the Nine Realms,” received the prestigious Coalition of Visionary Resources visionary award. In this specially written article, Sonja, who lives in Arizona, tells how to become an Earth Angel to help others in their lives and the qualities which are required. I WAS born an Earth Angel and can see, hear, feel, smell and oddly taste everything in the unseen world. As a child, I played in the woods with devas and built forts with tree spirits. My mother recognised my abilities and placed me in a ballet class to give form to my story. I remember spinning fast as I travelled across the dance studio floor. I would calculate how many chaîné turns (a series of short, usually fast turns by which a ballet dancer moves across the stage) I could do in the room and explore how fast I could turn. Suddenly, my body would transport me without rhyme or reason until arriving at my destination. I was the child who did grand jetés (a big leap) as peals of laughter escaped my smile in what was supposed to be a quiet and subdued setting. My classical ballet training taught me how to defy time and space. In my early adult life, I was a professional ballerina. I spent a decade at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. This allowed my exploration of timelines where I was able to relive past lives through countless days and nights of Shakespearean plays. It also opened me to understanding my own cosmology and karma. SONJA GRACE: “The journey of an Earth Angel is often arduous and challenging.” (Photo: Danielle Richardson) PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 202237 37 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 FEATURE There are many requirements for the life of an Earth Angel. The most important aspect is living your life in service I learned from years of teachers and dance how to defy time and space, and work long distance on clients. The journey of an Earth Angel is often arduous and challenging. Learning how to navigate gifts and abilities needs more than pointe shoes and a tutu. Earth Angels need a proper platform from which they can execute their gifts. There are many requirements for the life of an Earth Angel. The most important aspect is living your life in service. This is a daily ritual that I have practised for over 40 years. Living in service requires total surrender. We often think of the sacrifices doctors and nurses make, but there is a community of health professionals, healers, naturopaths, acupuncturists and herbalists that have equally sacrificed their lives for a greater cause. Living in service also requires the ability to let go and let God. It likewise requires clear boundaries. This is something which is acquired by training. A good teacher will lay the groundwork for the path of an Earth Angel. Knowing your emotional wounds and doing inner work is critical. Too often we see the wounded healer navigating oceans of dysfunctional behaviour and little self-discovery to manage the internal seascape. In my book Become an Earth Angel, I describe their common characteristics. Authenticity is paramount for any Earth Angel. Knowing who you are and why you are here helps you to find your own voice. 38 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 Understanding the ego is everything. The ego is a natural firewall, just like you have on your computer, and will protect you no matter what. Most people who grow up in a dysfunctional family will develop a false ego. This is often demonstrated through a loud external show of self-importance, but an internal low self-esteem. Being authentic means developing a healthy ego. A spiritual path often requires the death of the ego, a difficult journey that brings forth authenticity and transparency. We are not in the habit of seeing our ego. It is a part of the human experience and only traversed in psychological and spiritual work. There are many walls which people will hit when deconstructing the ego. Denial is the biggest block a spiritual seeker can face. The security system of the ego will override anything that challenges it. Therefore, I am emphatic about my clients doing deep processing work. There are a myriad of emotional wounds which are stored in the body, all tied to karma that need to be excavated for the ego to transform. A plateaux of understanding can be reached and re-engage the ego to its original format unless we stay diligent in our authenticity. Being empathic is a shared experience amongst the spiritual community. Needing to help others is another characteristic of the Earth Angel. Empaths are subject to so many feelings that it can be overwhelming. The feeling of “knowing” what another person needs or what they are going through can bring compassion and understanding. The need for clear boundaries while answering the call of empathy is an important factor for any Earth Angel. Many empaths come from a childhood which was dysfunctional and co-dependency was learned at an early age. The need to care for others is a common trait of co-dependency. Therefore, it is very important to understand one’s own empathic nature versus learned behaviour of the co-dependent. I teach my students to have clear boundaries for the heartfelt need to care for others. The highest level of clarity we have in human form is our integrity. Your work, words and actions are all accountable and transparent. There is no victimisation in integrity. There is only accountability. I teach students my daily prayer: “I ask that my will is aligned with the will of God and the Goddess. That all my healing and processing work is done for the highest good of everyone and the highest good of the universe.” I never use my gifts for gain or power. Nor do I allow pollutants such as drugs or alcohol to block my filters. I hold each person’s energy with love and respect. I do not converse with any astral beings such as entities and aliens, and only communicate with the angelic realm and the Divine. Integrity comes from doing the inner FEATURE work. In the beginning, we imprint all our parents’ psychology from the womb until three years old while we are creating the template for our karma or unresolved emotional wounds. Starting at four years old, patterns begin and cycle throughout our lives. When a client tells me they were traumatised at twelve, it is clear this is the pattern already cycling. When I take the client into a process, back to the beginning of the wound, it is always in early development that the original event took place. Learn who your inner child is and be his or her parents. We are born with a pallet of paints that represent each emotion and create our daily experience painting our world with feelings. Getting sidetracked by our feelings is the human condition. Emotions take us down karmic roads that revisit betrayal, anger, resentment, fear, abandonment and more. As an Earth Angel, I feel my integrity is bonded to a deeper understanding in the soul body. It is the inner navigational system of knowing right from wrong, keeping focused on a clear mind and heart, and remaining the observer. Being criticised for being too sensitive as children can put a block on our natural gifts. Sensitivity is a major characteristic of an Earth Angel. Some people experience psychic abilities or clairvoyance and can see the spirit realm. Others have clairaudience and hear the voices of the unseen world. A more common gift of the empath is clairsentience. Feeling what is going on and reading the energy in a room through your belly is a powerful gift. Claircognisance allows a person to download from their intuition to the brain. This “knowing” is a fantastic combination of heart and mind. Unblocking the wounded child takes us to the next characteristic. It is through humility that we learn to be of service and help others. The false ego will not survive the journey of the Earth Angel. The wounded inner child must be attended to to release the blocks from our sensitivity. Humility requires a good look at yourself and confronting the ego. Over 30 years ago, I sat on the side of a mountain in a Lakota Sioux ceremony called hanbleceya, which means crying for a vision. The medicine man whose altar I sat in kept an eye on me while I prayed. Hanbleceya involves four days of fasting, with no food or water. I experienced humility, as I sat alone in the dark, hungry, thirsty and cold. I felt humbled to be alive, but had a new understanding of life. One of the greatest aspects of an Earth Angel is the gift of healing. Born with this ability, most Earth Angels must learn to navigate the burden of illness and disease. Grounding the energy of the body is essential to a healer. Having awareness and clear filters helps not to take on other people’s pain and suffering. The greatest teacher of all is dis-ease. This powerful lesson takes us from fear to joy, disbelief to conviction and regret to surrender. Earth Angels are confronted with clients who are afraid, angry and resentful, and the victim in their story. Being a healer means helping clients to recognise their part in their illness and learn to forgive themselves and others. This brings humility, compassion and forgiveness to the forefront. The confrontation of fear versus love creates a powerful experience. The ego may not be ready to allow such an invasion of privacy. As in all life on Earth there is a transition or death that takes place. The healer is called to help with all transitions of life. This brings us to compassion, which is a necessary element to Earth Angels. Life on earth requires compassion. I see so many clients with cancer, illness and disease often calling me in their final hours for a miracle. To transcend the physical body, we must not live in fear. Our attachment to this earth plane keeps us believing in the illusion we have created. Having compassion creates an opening in the heart that transforms tolerance. It is fear that keeps us from experiencing compassion, fear of not being accepted, not being loved, not being seen or heard, or not being important enough. I teach my students to let go of their fear, which allows their compassion to flourish. I knew what my sense of purpose was at a very young age and attempted to heal our family dog at five years old. She had cysts on her back, and I was determined to relieve her of any pain. My purpose as a healer, mystic and visionary has been with me through all my earthly incarnations. I have clients ask me daily, “What is my purpose?” Each person has their own karma and purpose as to why they came to Earth. Through my time travels, I have learned our greatest relationship is with the earth. There are soul mates, twin flames and karmic relationships that keep us preoccupied, but the Goddess, the earth, is our main reason for being here. Past lives are important to the Earth Angel because they tell the story of our karma or unresolved emotional wounds. When we understand our history, we gain awareness for our purpose. I can see past lives and share with clients where they have been all the way back to their first incarnation. I find that most people came here as scientists, botanists and geologists to study the planet. As infinite souls, we originate from other parts of the galaxy and beyond. We have always been and always will be. Love is the greatest characteristic of an Earth Angel. When we embody Divine love, we transcend the illusion and no longer engage in duality. Our true mission on earth is to love at the deepest level of our being. Earth Angels are called upon now more than ever. Inside, the vendor had heavy, antique furniture and several stuffed dogs – her late pets – and in one case just the head of a Jack Russell. As a dog lover, it turned my stomach. My husband, newly promoted to management level, fell in love with the grandeur of the place, its old servants’ bells that still worked, its elegant rooms and large garden backing onto the village common. I had my misgivings, but agreed we should buy it. Our relationship had hit a rocky patch after the birth of our first son and we finished a year’s counselling at Relate the day before we moved in. It seemed that we had mended ourselves; we settled in and had the leaking roof fixed. We redecorated, taking off layers of old paint and revealing lovely original fireplaces, and wooden doors and panels. Most of our money went on the house. We rarely had holidays away, but felt optimistic about the future and soon another baby was on the way. Harry was a delight from the day he was born. He was a happy, smiling, fun-loving child with big brown eyes, and learned to talk quickly. By his second birthday, Harry could express himself and describe things well. Sadly, my husband’s work had become more stressful and he was often away overnight. We became distant again. I regularly felt he was not telling me the truth about where he was. Often he 40 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 ANN GREEN: “I heard a voice in my ear say ‘Get out!’ I was glad to go.” didn’t give me contact details or answer his mobile phone. I became anxious, tense and suspicious, and hated myself for it. One day, sitting in the bath with only candles lighting the darkness, I felt utter despair and silently called out, “If there’s anyone there, please help me.” I don’t really know who I was addressing. I had some belief in a spirit world and a sort of higher power. It’s only in retrospect that I realised this may have been the start of the problem. Harry’s older brother often had night terrors. These were really disturbing to witness, but he never said there was any particular cause. Now Harry, the placid, happy-go-lucky little boy, started to have nightmares too, especially when my husband was away. He’d cry out in the night and I would rush along to see what was wrong. One night he said, “There’s a man in my room.” Of course, I reassured him there wasn’t. If anything, if I thought of any resident ghosts I would have imagined there might be a lady in the room, as this had been the servant’s bedroom in the grand old days of this middle-class home. There was no bell-push like there was in the other rooms. There had been a second staircase connecting this room to the kitchen, so she wouldn’t disturb the master and mistress of the house. From the kitchen, the servant could come and go via the back door. The stairs had been taken out some time before, creating a larger kitchen downstairs. Upstairs, the space was now the bathroom in which I had made my bath time appeal. Next to it, Harry’s room still had a second doorway, but now it only opened onto a cupboard. The nightmares weren’t especially frequent, but after two or three more Harry declared: “The man was in my room. He tried to kiss me.” This was a more alarming turn of events. This happened once or twice more. It was understandably frightening for Harry, but my husband never witnessed these things directly and was sceptical when I told him. Occasionally Harry would also “see” an old lady in the garden. He called her “other grandma.” There was nobody there. I had a feeling that a former housekeeper might be around in spirit form, but she was no problem at all. I wasn’t obsessed with the idea of ghosts. Like most people, I’d had some unexplained experiences, but on the few occasions I visited mediums out of curiosity, I heard nothing that convinced me either way. I was now a little jumpy. One lunchtime, Harry was playing in the lounge to the right of the front door and hallway. It was probably Lego bricks or his Thomas the Tank Engine set, which he loved. Harry suddenly stopped, looked up and was agitated. He seemed to “see” through the wall of the hall and door, and said: “The man is here, the man in my room. He’s here; he’s coming in.” I was pretty freaked out as you can imagine, but then Harry relaxed and said, “He’s gone.” “Gone where?” I asked. Harry was a bit puzzled I had to ask and could not understand that I hadn’t seen the man. “I think he went upstairs,” he said, and went back to playing. This was bizarre enough, but about two weeks later, events got even worse. The same thing happened again. It was around 1.00 pm. The TV news had just come on and I was about to get us some lunch when Harry again said the man was coming in. “What does he want, Harry?” I blurted out. His answer was simply “You.” I’d had enough of this. Some years ago, I met Essex medium Maureen Flynn, so rang her. Maureen agreed to come to our house and see what she could do to help. I arranged for Harry to be taken out by a neighbour. Maureen arrived and was soon going round the rooms. First, she detected the “other grandma,” a lady she confirmed was a warm, smiling elderly woman who had worked there and just liked to come back to keep an eye on the children. She was welcome, I said. In fact, I had a photo of the person I thought it might be. Maureen agreed that she was a likely candidate. Upstairs, in the main bedroom Maureen felt an impression of somebody struggling for breath. She felt they may have died there, but it was not haunted. Finally we came to Harry’s room. At the doorway of the cupboard where the stairs had been, Maureen said she felt a cold area. Maureen suggested I step into and out of the spot, but I couldn’t feel anything. Maureen was sure this was a portal, a place where the spirit world could come through, and was certain that the man was able to enter this way at night. She felt that he was looking for his lost love, and that was what Harry had meant when he said I was the target. Maureen prepared to communicate with him and asked me to leave them to it. I went downstairs, but my ears were straining to try and hear what was said, as she was talking to someone. Finally, Maureen came downstairs and told me that the man had been a lover of the maid who had lived there. She felt it was not long after the property was built in 1902. The man had come to the house a number of times and became friendly with the maid. He used the back stairs to come and go without anyone knowing. Maureen “saw” what happened to him – the owners came back unexpectedly and he made a dash for the stairs. Here we find out about Kate’s spiritual journey and read first-hand accounts of some of her experiences. Plus we get to see some of Kate’s striking charcoal spirit drawings, each with a nature connection. KATE describes herself as a spirit artist, animal communicator and medium. She’s a highly sensitive intuitive individual who has a deep connection with nature. She explains that she has been aware of her natural psychic abilities from an early age. Her earliest valued connections were with horses rather than humans. In 2017 she was forced to rehome her small herd of horses as a result of degenerative disc disease. This time of rest was a pivotal moment for Kate in that it allowed her to further explore her interest in the study of psychic science at the Arthur Findlay College (the world’s foremost centre for the advancement of psychic science) and began her journey in spirit art. Kate has a BA Hons degree and has formally studied neurolinguistic programming (NLP), animal communication and is qualified as an EAL (Equine Assisted Learning) therapist in equine assisted therapy. She has travelled extensively and is keenly interested in the work of philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, parapsychology researcher Rupert Sheldrake, and scientist and animal behaviourist Temple Grandin. Kate offers as one of her most memorable moments a chance meeting with renowned painter Sir Howard Hodgkin at an Easter lunch in 1991. Their son, Wood, was a friend of painter Howard Hodgkin and invited him and his partner to lunch on the day. She fondly remembers the fact that Sir Howard was enthralled by the shape, form and line of her nose. He asked whether she was aware of how beautiful it was and said that it must be Roman in origin. Kate replied that her dad was from southern Italy. Howard’s attention to detail and awareness of form immediately perceptible in his work was even more inspirational in his relationship with the world in general. Sir Howard died on March 9, 2017, which coincided with the first occasion Kate attended the Arthur Findlay College. Kate lives with her husband and son in a wooden house which she designed, set in a seven-acre woodland in County Galway, Ireland. She is a high functioning autistic person. KATE’S WORK Kate works with Spirit to inspire comfort and support individuals in their life’s journey. She provides charcoal drawings of spirit portraits – human and animal guides in which the essence or soul of the guide is captured and resonates for the client. Messages, if received, are provided. SOUL CARDS Produced from Kate’s original drawings, the soul cards are useful as part of meditation practice, psychic readings and mediumship development. They may also be used as training aids and in group work. The cards contain quotes from the work of the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, with kind permission of the Krishnamurti HORSE: “Nobody can teach you about yourself. SON HELPS WITH SPIRIT PORTRAIT Kate has found that when she has drawn portraits for clients the response has invariably been inspirational for her as well as the client. Here, in her own words, Kate shares some of her spiritual experiences: A lady from Wales contacted me with a request for a portrait. She was unclear as to what she required and asked if I would connect with the spirit world and provide her with a drawing. I found myself drawn to this request as it allows for greater expression of the spirit world to come through: the mind of the artist is then able to step further back. I spoke with my son prior to starting the drawing. I spoke of a gentleman gently making his presence known to me. On his shoulder sat a magnificent barn owl. The two inextricably bonded. My son was quiet then said he felt the presence of a bat. Unusually, I dismissed the suggestion of the bat and its possible connection to the owl and the gentleman, and proceeded to walk over to my studio to start the drawing . To be honest, I may have dismissed the idea of the bat because I felt unfamiliar to how exactly I could draw one – an example of how an undisciplined mind can get in the way. I can often forget to trust in the intelligence of the spirit world. I showed my son the finished drawing. He was somewhat dismayed by the absence of the bat and insisted that I should include it. I decided to take a quiet walk in the woods. On returning to my studio, I sat quietly with the drawing of the gentleman and the owl and after some time I, too, felt the bat, and the drawing was completed. It was at this moment that my husband came into the studio at around 10.00 pm. It was dark outside and the light of the studio BARN OWL AND BAT: “Truth has no path and that is the beauty of truth, it is living.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti. escaped from the door as he entered. We spoke briefly about the gentleman, the owl and the bat, and suddenly I was aware of a small fast-moving shadow. As I looked up, to my surprise a bat had flown in through the open door. It was circling above our heads in silence. My heart smiled in astonishment at the synchronicity. This was the first time and, at time of writing this, the last time a bat has ever come into the studio. We eventually convinced the reluctant bat to leave, and I sent a photograph of the completed spirit drawing to the lady in Wales. Having received the portrait, she called me to say that she was immediately drawn to the gentleman in the painting. She felt him to be kind and gentle. She referred to the fact that she had recently and very unusually come across a barn owl on a daytime walk. It was perched on a branch just staring at her. She felt that it had a message but was unclear as to what the message may be. She also referred to the fact that she had a healing practice in the loft of an old, restored barn that bats are regular visitors to, and that she continuously hears owls at night. In what I considered to be a very glowing comment, demonstrating that the spirit world speaks through spirit art, she stated: “I love the portrait. When you feel that you can hear art then you know it’s good.” PORTRAIT FOR A FRIEND “Real learning comes about when the competitive spirit has ceased.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti. 44 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 My second example relates to a spirit art portrait I made for a friend of mine, Mia Ottosson – a tutor at the Arthur Findlay College, spirit artist and generous mentor. I made the drawing in May 2019. On completion, I sent Mia a voice message explaining to her that I felt that the gentleman in the drawing spoke about living in the 1800s. She recognised the individual instantly on receipt of the image. She called me confirming that the gentleman was indeed her spirit art teacher, her guide who lived from 1864 until 1901. SPIRIT JOURNEY As far back as I can remember I’ve been aware that there was another dimension to my existence in alternate universes. The first time I was acutely aware of my psychic and mediumistic abilities was during a meeting with a spiritual healer and two others in 2004. We were discussing healing and distant healing. One of us would leave the room and lie down in another room, and the two remaining focused on sending healing. I was able to read the other two individuals to the extent that I recounted the loss of two infants who made their presence known to me, and the separation of an infant from her mother in early infancy. The clairsentient images were powerful and haunting. As previously stated, I’ve always had a strong interest in animal communication. Many times I’ve felt that I have been led down numerous tracks and experienced many profound encounters with animals that are still to this day impossible to put into words. I’ve always sensed that at some level there was some sort of inextricable order associated with all these experiences. They, together with my ten-year-old son, eventually led me to the Arthur Findlay College. I first met with tutors Sharon Harvey and Angie Morris in 2017 on a course at the college and thereafter with tutor Minister Bill Thomson, who remains my mentor to date. Tutors Colin Bates, Mia Ottosson, Sandie Baker, Lynn Probert and Alan Stuttle have also been so supportive. I’m eternally grateful to all. The experiences have been amazing. I consider all the tutors I’ve been privileged to meet and work with as my friends. Has any further positive research been published? – Jonathan Trotwood. Last time, I concentrated on the work of Sir Roger Penrose (a British mathematician, mathematical physicist and philosopher of science), and Stuart Hameroff, an American anaesthesiologist and professor at the University of Arizona, on near-death experiences. I also mentioned the MWI, or manyworlds interpretation, of Dr Robert Lanza, who is considered one of the world’s leading scientists. Other scientists have been open to the possibility of the continuity of life and investigated, experimented and published accordingly. To be as objective as possible, let us put aside everything we think we know as Spiritualists about spirit and the soul, and look at the survival of human consciousness from a purely scientific aspect i.e. quantum physics. (A quantum in physics is simply the smallest quantity that can exist at a subatomic level.) Sir Roger Penrose holds that it is possible consciousness in the form of quantum information can exist outside the body, perhaps indefinitely, as a soul. Dr Robert Lanza says: “Although individual bodies are destined to selfdestruct, the alive feeling – ‘Who am I?’ – is just a 20 watt fountain of energy operating in the brain. But this energy doesn’t go away at death. “If for all the things, whether it is living or dead, there exists a quantum code… then there is an existence after death.” Dr Lanza maintains that life creates the universe, not the other way around. He commented: “What you see (around you) could not be present without your consciousness. “If reality is created by our own consciousness, can consciousness ever truly be extinguished?” If this “quantum soul” does indeed 46 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 SIR ROGER PENROSE believed it is possible that consciousness can exist outside the body. (Photo: Cirone-Musi/Festival della Scienza) survive, where does it go? Some scientists believe it goes into what is known as a uniform field of consciousness. This is one of the so-called quantum fields that exist throughout the universe. The late Prof Dr Hans-Peter Dürr, former head of the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich, declared that beyond the material world is “an infinite reality that is much bigger.” He added that our material world is rooted in this infinite reality and that “in this way, our lives in this plane of existence are encompassed, surrounded, by the afterworld already.” Dr Dürr compared the survival of human consciousness with personal computing. Just as data on a hard drive is uploaded into the processor, so consciousness, in the form of quantum information, is transferred at death to the spiritual quantum field. He concluded: “When I die, I do not lose this information, this consciousness. The body dies, but the spiritual quantum field continues. In this way, I am immortal.” Note that he described the quantum field as “spiritual.” Why? Here is what Dr Christian Hellwig, of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, says: “Our thoughts, our will, our consciousness and our feelings show properties that could be referred to as spiritual properties… “No direct interaction with the known fundamental forces of natural science, such as gravitation, electromagnetic forces, etc, can be detected in the spiritual. “On the other hand, however, these spiritual properties correspond exactly to the characteristics that distinguish the extremely puzzling and wondrous phenomena in the quantum world.” British physicist Jeremy Hayward says: “Many scientists who are still part of the scientific mainstream are no longer afraid to openly state that consciousness awareness could, in addition to space, time, matter and energy, be a fundamental element of the world – perhaps even more fundamental than space and time… It may be a mistake to ban the spirit from nature.” The late theoretical physicist, David Bohm – an American-British scientist – thought along similar lines to Dr Dürr and stated: “The results of modern natural sciences only make sense if we assume an inner, uniform, transcendent reality that is based on all external data and facts. The very depth of human consciousness is one of them.” David Bohm also postulates that we are immortal and exist outside of time. Life, he says, cannot be extinguished in a timeless, spaceless world. These theories are, of course, controversial. They conflict with materialist beliefs in a purely physical existence, as well as religious doctrines that deny the continuity of life. For that reason they tend to be found in specialist publications rather than the mainstream media. Nevertheless, we are making progress. People no longer have to accept what they were taught about “death” as children by those who knew no better. All the above information is available to anyone with a few clicks of the mouse. Try it for yourself! n FEATURE FEATURE Emperor sent emissary to ancient oracle What can you tell me about Julian the Apostate, the last non-Christian emperor of Rome? – Joyce Carpenter. Flavius Claudius Julianus was born around AD 332 in the last years of the reign of his uncle the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Constantine had chosen Christianity as the state religion to unify a divided and weakened empire. At the time, it stretched from Europe and North Africa to the shores of the Black Sea and the borders of Persia. He oversaw the transformation of the charismatic faith of the early Fathers into one of ritual and dogma as enshrined in the Nicene Creed. Julian was raised a Christian. His father was Julius Constantius, Constantine’s half brother and a consul. When Constantine died in 337, the army murdered many of Julian’s family including his father, so that only the sons of Constantine should rule. Constantine’s son Constantius succeeded him as emperor and shared power with his two brothers. After their deaths, he became sole ruler as Constantius II. He pursued his father’s policy of imposing Christianity on his subjects, which was enforced by coercion and exile. Julian blamed Constantius for the murder of his father, brother and other relatives. He also questioned and rejected Christianity. Julian loved Hellenistic philosophy and culture, and identified as a Hellene. He studied at Pergamum and Ephesus, and later at Athens. When Julian was 23, Constantius – apparently unaware of his enmity – appointed him as a subordinate ruler with the rank of Caesar. He dispatched him to Gaul, where he proved himself a successful military commander. Julian defeated the marauding Alemanni and Franks, and expelled them. This merely aroused jealously and mistrust in Constantius. He tried to weaken Julian’s authority by demanding his best troops to serve in the East. Julian refused and his men hailed him as Emperor. In 361, he marched against Constantius, who was suddenly taken ill. On his deathbed he bequeathed the empire to Julian. Now sole ruler of the empire, Julian announced his intention to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher-emperor. He sought to restore the “old religion” and issued an edict proclaiming freedom of worship for all religions. An official could be a Christian or not as he chose. Christians were still allowed to hold offices of state, but were prohibited from teaching the Greek classics. From now on, Julian is described as a “pagan,” but that is a relatively modern term. In his day, the “old religion” was a mixture of Greek culture, Platoist philosophy and polytheism (the belief in multiple deities) that broadly speaking came under the heading of Hellenism. Julian was not alone in this. Greek was the common language of the Eastern Empire and educated people including Christians were steeped in Greek culture. Again, like many educated Romans, Julian worshipped Mithra, the Persian sun god. Anxious to restore the ancient practice of divination, he sent an emissary to the Oracle at Delphi. It famously brought back the last ever oracle that signalled the passing of the classical world. It read: “Tell the Emperor the Dorian hall is crumbling in decay. “Apollo’s chamber is no more, nor his oracular laurel, “Nor prophesying spring; and the chattering water is silent.” Unfortunately, Julian also reintroduced animal sacrifice. This was in the age-old superstitious belief that the smoke of burnt offerings was necessary to carry the prayers of mortals heavenward. It was probably this belief that induced Julian to restore the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem where animal sacrifice had taken place. Quite what the Jews themselves would have thought is not recorded, but they were overjoyed that a Roman emperor wished to rebuild their temple. Christian writers told how his intention to rebuild was greeted with rapture by the Jews, but opposed by the Christians. It was this decision as much as anything that led to his being called “the Apostate.” According to his Hellenistic beliefs, Yahweh (the national god of ancient Israel and Judah) was not an exclusive deity. Julian wrote to the Jews that their God “is worshipped by us also under other names.” He identified Yahweh with Plato’s Creator and also referred to Him as Helios and Attis. In addition, Julian revoked Hadrian’s edict that forbade the Jews to reside in Jerusalem and prohibited special levies against them. He wrote, “No one is any longer to have the power to oppress the masses of your people by such exaction.” Unfortunately, at this point Julian THIS statue of Constantine the Great by Philip Jackson was unveiled in York in 1998. He invaded Rome’s old rival Persia with an army of 65,000 Roman troops. Before the walls of Ctesiphon, leading from the front as usual, he was fatally wounded by a javelin. He passed on June 26, 363 aged 31, having ruled for just twenty months. Julian left his friend and general Alypius in charge of rebuilding the temple. Work lasted but a few days before either lightening or an earthquake caused fire to burst from the foundations. Several workmen were killed, others fled and all work ceased. The Christians attributed this to divine intervention. They quoted Jesus’ prophesy that “not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” Jovian, the next Emperor, was a Christian who reverted to the proChristian policies of Constantius. Work on the temple was abandoned and the Jewish people were again exiled. Had Julian lived, their history would have been so different. They could have returned to their homeland instead of having to live in other peoples’ countries. The Church demonised Julian, but later writers took a more sympathetic view. In his History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism, Irish historian, essayist and political theorist William Lecky wrote that he was “among the best men who ever sat on a throne.” In The Psychic Stream, famous Spiritualist Arthur Findlay said that Julian “was a good Emperor, temperate in all things, and at all times showed self-control and zeal for the public good… “If his reign had been longer, the history of Europe would undoubtedly have been different.” Lastly, English writer, philosopher and novelist Colin Wilson – an expert on the paranormal – wrote in The Occult that if Julian “had lived as long as the Emperor Augustus, the world would have become a better and saner place.” n Figuring out the Rule of Three What is the Rule of Three in magic? Is there really anything in it? – Nicholas Moore. The Rule of Three is a warning given to those who are initiated into Wicca. It is usually given in verse form: “Ever mind the Rule of Three, “Three times thine acts come back to thee; “This lesson thou must truly learn, “Thou only gets what thou dost earn.” There are differing opinions about this, even among Wiccans. Some say that it only applies to witches’ spells and other forms of magic. Others maintain that “three” is simply a nominal value to warn initiates that whatever they put out will be returned in greater measure i.e. to the power of three or more. Still others claim that it is not a rule so much as a universal law. But that would mean that it has always existed. Where, then, is it mentioned in the occult literature of the past? Wiccans themselves cannot trace its origin any earlier than Gerald B. Gardner’s High Magic’s Aid published in 1949. Although a novel, it contains authentic information about witchcraft. Regarded by many as the father of Wicca, Gardner wrote, “Mark well, when thou receivest good, so equally art bound to return good threefold.” If a witch uses magic to do only good and it is returned threefold or more, all is well. If, however, the witch uses magic to do harm, the Rule of Three warns 48 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 WHEN he wrote “High Magic’s Aid,” Wiccan Gerald B. Gardner used his craft name of Scire. that not only will it rebound: it will go on rebounding. Magic recognises that there are other planes of reality beyond the physical. You can use energised thought to open up a channel into another dimension. It will remain open until you close it, and it is a two-way process. The energy will flow towards you as well as from you, and go on flowing. In this way, the consequences of your original thoughts are made manifest more than once or twice. Witches and magicians use secret and mystic rituals, but their purpose is to serve as a focus for thought. Thoughts alone though can be strong enough. When we as Spiritualists send absent healing, we consciously send out healing thoughts and act as a channel for the healing power. Ideally, we do it in a quiet place, but of necessity we could do it anywhere, even a crowded railway carriage. The lesson then, not just for witches, but for everyone, is this: be careful of your thoughts, especially if you are angry. Suppose a harmful thought became so energised with anger that it became tangible and passed beyond your control. What could you do? Could you recall it, or close the energy channel it opened up? Are you confident you could undo any harm that has been done? That is why our spirit guides warn us that what we put out comes back to us. The great masters, including the Buddha, caution us to beware of our thoughts. “We are shaped,” he said, “by our thoughts; we become what we think” and “Thoughts really do become things.” In the Bible, Deuteronomy 15:9 states, “Beware that there is no base thought in your heart.” Psalm 64:6 adds, “Inward thought and the heart of a man are deep.” In other words, everything is cause and effect. Thoughts as well as actions have consequences. n CAMBERLEY SPIRITUALIST CHURCH 112 GORDON ROAD, CAMBERLEY, SURREY GU15 2JQ Website: www.camberleyspiritualistchurch.org ~ Tel: 01252 879719 6th SUNDAY SERVICE at 6.30pm SUE & MALCOLM NASH 13th CLOSED 20th CLOSED 27th CLOSED MARCH 2022 REGULAR EVENTS Every Monday 7.30pm OPEN CIRCLE First Wednesday of month 7.30pm (2nd March) ONLINE OPEN PLATFORM Zoom Meeting ID: 870 8361 6024 Password: 491883 (Monday Events - Except Bank Holidays) NEVER MISS AN ISSUE OF PSYCHIC NEWS Subscribe direct and enjoy the luxury of having the magazine delivered to your home every month A year’s subscription costs United Kingdom £48 Overseas £68 By post, please send your details or the form (right) along with payment to: Psychic Press Ltd, Unit 2, Griggs Business Centre, West Street, Coggeshall, Essex CO6 1NT To subscribe by phone, call: 01376 563091 Or subscribe via our website: www.psychicnews.org.uk TUESDAY CLAIRVOYANCE at 7.30pm 1st SARAH MAGMAN 8th GILLIAN BLAISE 15th MICHAEL LENNON 22nd VAL TRIGGS & CAROL DAWBER Third Friday of each month Friday 18th March 7.30pm Mini Workshop HEALING Every Monday 1pm - 2pm (Approx) Every Alternate Thursday 7pm - 8pm Please send me a Postal Subscription to Psychic News for 1 year Name ...................................................................................... DOVER CASTLE was founded in the 11th century. The Romans had a fort in the area and the unique remains of a lighthouse dating from their occupation can still be seen in the castle grounds. For centuries, Dover was regarded as one of the key defences of Britain. Tunnels were dug out beneath the castle during the Napoleonic Wars and Second World War in readiness for an invasion from across the Channel. In 1940, the evacuation of Dunkirk was overseen from the tunnels and German planes fought with British fighters in the skies above the town and port during the Battle of Britain. Dover and the Straits soon became known as “Hellfire Corner,” as the town was regularly fired upon from German guns across the Channel. Up to 10,000 buildings in and around the town were damaged by shellfire and more than 200 civilians were killed. Hundreds more suffered injuries. It was not until September 1944 that the guns were finally silenced when they fell to British and Canadian troops following the allied invasion of France. The church of St Mary in Castro and the adjoining Roman lighthouse is said to be haunted by a Roman soldier and monk. The castle is home to a phantom drummer boy murdered during the Napoleonic period. He is said to haunt the battlements at night, the sounds of his drumming echoing across the deserted castle grounds. The drummer was fifteen. One story THIS wonderful aerial photo shows Dover Castle in its full majesty. (Photo: Michael Coppins) claims that he was on an errand involving a large sum of money. Two soldiers heard of this and decided to rob him. In the struggle, he was accidentally beheaded by a sword. The Red Lady haunts the Keep. She wears a long, flowing red dress, but who she was has been lost to history. The apparition once put in an appearance in the Officer’s Mess, which was built in the 19th century. FEATURE A SOLDIER poses by one of the German guns which once blasted Dover from France. (Photo: Malindine E G (Capt), No 5 Army Film & Photographic Unit) In December 1897, General Sir William Butler was having dinner with some of his officers when a lady in red entered the room looking upset. She insisted to the general that there was a fire in the smoking-room. A subaltern was sent and found that the chimney was on fire. It was quickly put out, but the lady insisted that all the rooms be checked. They did and everything was found to be safe. The general then asked the lady who she was. She ignored his question and walked towards the door, vanishing as she neared it. The next morning, the phantom appeared again. She approached one of the officers by the stables and insisted that he go to his room immediately. The officer ignored her request, but was urged by his men to go and look. She then smiled, curtsied and vanished again as she walked across the snow. It was noted that her footsteps left no trace on the ground. The officer went to his room and discovered a fire. It was finally put out, but not before causing damage, which amounted to over £2,000. It was discovered that the fire was caused by smouldering wood in the roof, AS he locked up one night, a member of staff saw a phantom in the castle’s Great Hall. (Photo: Michael Garlick/HARTLEPOOLMARINA2014) a legacy of the chimney fire from the day before. The castle was searched for the mysterious woman, but no trace of her could be found. A figure from the English Civil War period also haunts the ground floor of the castle. He has been described as wearing a purple cloak, wide-brimmed hat and knee-high riding boots. The King’s Bedroom is also haunted. Visitors have felt a sense of unease there and the lower half of a figure has been seen walking across the room. The ghost of an old woman and her black dog haunts Peverell’s Tower. A legend states that her little black dog was entombed alive in the walls of the tower. This was done as a sacrifice in the hope that it would end the bad luck that had dogged – excuse the pun – the construction of the Norman tower. The dog’s howls of terror are still said to be heard from time to time. Some say that when the old lady protested about her dog, she was walled up alive too. The tunnels beneath the castle are also active. An English Civil War pikeman appeared in the guardroom area, and a soldier dressed in khaki and a nurse have been seen in the hospital. Voices have also THE lower half of a figure has been seen walking across the King’s Bedroom. (Photo: Nilfanion) been heard in the Dynamo Room. Leslie Simpson was a tour guide at the castle. He was showing some twenty visitors around the Defence Telecommunications Repeater Station in the tunnels beneath the castle. The guide noticed that one of the visitors, a woman, was acting strangely. She appeared to be looking at something, then became alarmed and fell on one knee. Leslie went to her and asked if she was injured, but the woman said that she was all right. The woman told him that she had seen a man in naval uniform at one end of the room. He appeared to be working on some equipment. She thought he was a member of staff, but became alarmed and then started to walk quickly towards the tour group. The man reached the barrier, walked through it and then her. The woman spun around and saw him vanish through an exit. This was why she had fallen on her knee. The guide later took another group around the tunnels, but decided to walk ahead to look in the Repeater Station for the apparition. Leslie saw nothing, but noticed that a blue door that led to an annexe was open. It should have been shut. He then heard a sound from inside, which he likened to a mechanical whine, combined with an animal noise. The guide became scared and the sounds immediately stopped. He never heard the noise again. A few months went by and an Italian tourist saw the same figure in a naval uniform near the equipment. He asked Leslie about the man, but no one else had seen him. Karen Mennie was another guide at the castle. She was taking a tour group around the Repeater Station in the summer of 1993 and noticed that a father and daughter were acting strangely. PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 51 FEATURE IN one of the tunnels beneath the castle, a visitor said that an apparition walked right through her. (Photo: Karen Roe on Flickr) The daughter appeared to be talking to an invisible person as the father looked on. The father then left the area and Karen had to get him to rejoin the rest of the group. At the end of the tour, the guide told the group that the Repeater Station was supposed to be the most haunted part of the complex. The father then replied that he had seen the ghost. Karen assumed that he was joking, but he then explained that his daughter had been speaking to the apparition. The father seemed unconcerned by the whole experience, but the daughter appeared to be in shock. The father claimed that the ghost’s name was Bill Billings. He communicated with the father and said that he was a Postal Telecommunications Officer from Canterbury, who had been killed assembling some amplifier racks. Attempts were made to see if this information was correct, but it was found that the local military records for the war years were not complete. Two American tourists recounted another interesting experience. They had been visiting the castle and tunnels, and commented on the sound effects used during the tour. They were especially impressed with the sound effects in the area of St John’s Tower. The groans and shrieks had been particularly effective. The tour guide explained that no sound effects were used in the castle or tunnels. After the couple left, the area was searched in case someone had been injured and was responsible for the cries heard by the Americans. No one was found. Philip Wyborn-Brown, another member of staff, was a sceptic and attributed much of the phenomena to natural causes such as drafts and shadows cast by the light. However, even he had a strange experience in the castle. 52 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 Philip was checking the building one evening to ensure that all the tourists had left. As he locked up, he saw a figure pass the Great Hall and walk into the King’s Bed Chamber. He dismissed the idea that it could have been a ghost and believes it was caused by a shadow. In 1991, the Thanet Psychic and Paranormal Research Unit and the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena conducted a series of night vigils in the castle. On October 12, one of the investigators was in a passageway in the castle. He heard a noise like a wooden door slamming. The time was 11.22 pm. At 2.20 am, two other members of the team were on the second floor of the Keep. A loud bang was heard from behind a locked door that led to the west stairwell. The door was opened, but nothing could be found to account for the noise. The door was again locked and the two investigators walked away. As they did so, the door shook for several seconds. Two other members were staying in the St John’s Tower area when they saw a shadowy figure moving down a stairwell. One of the team called out and the figure turned and walked quickly back up the stairs. They assumed it was another member of the team, but when they asked him, he explained that he had been at the other end of the passageway at the time of the sighting. The same two investigators heard the sound of a heavy wooden door being shut at 3.30 am and 4.40 am. This time, the sound was recorded on tape. Other members also heard doors slamming. It was decided to train a camera on the two wooden doors in the Keep, which had been witnessed shaking. It was a wise decision, as the film captured both doors being violently shaken for several seconds. One of the investigators cried out “We’ve got it!” and the shaking stopped. A search was made of the area, but nothing could be found to account for what had been witnessed. Other sounds were heard in St John’s Tower during the vigil. One was likened to the dropping of a pebble falling onto the wooden stairs. Four of the team heard this. A second vigil was held on November 30. A tape recorder was left on in the Mural Galley, which lies in the Keep. The sounds of the recorder being interfered with were recorded. The smell of perfume was also noted in the area whilst in the basement two loud bangs were also noted. Members of an ITV series, Strange But True, were making an episode in the castle and a psychic, Michael Bromley, was filmed in the tunnels trying to contact any of the ghosts there. He mentioned the name Helen in the Repeater Station, but Clive Boreham of English Heritage was unimpressed, as no women were historically associated with that area. A few days after the TV crew had departed, an Australian tourist, Annie Sallows, was visiting the castle and tunnels. She suddenly saw an apparition running up to her. Annie described him as blond and said that he was wearing a navy blue uniform. He spoke to her and said that his name was Samuel. The apparition was quite agitated and kept asking where Helen was. Clive Boreham was astonished when the tourist told him, as she had not been aware of what the medium said only a few days before. He admitted that this experience had now left him with an open mind. n John West is a writer, film producer and broadcaster. In 2018, he teamed up with director Jason Figgis to produce films and TV documentaries. The pair have so far collaborated on several projects ranging from a documentary on photographer Sir Simon Marsden to a feature film called “Winifred Meeks.” John’s first book on ghosts, “Britain’s Haunted Heritage,” was published by JMD Media in 2019. QUESTION: What is the price on Love? ANSWER: There isn’t one – love can not be bought The reason that I pose this question and then give a response to it, is to let you know that neither my colleague nor I charge for any help that we can extend. “What is the nature or type of help that they can extend?” This may be the thought that now comes to your mind. Rather than go into a lengthy explanation, perhaps a brief explanation will help? My colleague has the “Gift” of “Mediumship.” However, although often being called a “Psychic” he is not a fortune-teller. His “information” comes from an external source, and that “source” focuses on things that are of the heart/spirit. Example: inner you; things regretted; forgiveness; a deceased family member; a loved-one; a friend. My application is that of “Contact-Healing,” sometimes referred to as “laying-on-of-hands” Healing. Maybe the simplest way of explaining it is to think of an engine that has run down and is about to stop working. It needs its battery recharging. You are the “Motor” and I try to be the “Charger.” The motor and charger have to be connected – hence the term “laying-on-of-hands.” You may not be a “Believer” in such things, but when all other avenues of help seem to be exhausted is it unusual to give something that may help – and without financial cost - a try? I do not operate a business, therefore should you wish to visit, you will be coming to my home – and like any friend you will get a cup of tea or coffee – for free!! Many years later and nothing has changed. What unites these groups is that their music is extremely well written, the lyrics meaningful and the presentation exceptional, due to the expertise of the musicians. I want to pick up on one Abba song as the theme for this article. You may remember the film Mama Mia and Julie Walters’ fantastic version of Take a Chance on Me. Hearing the song recently got me thinking about chance and how, as a Spiritualist, I viewed the concept of chance. Born into Spiritualism, I have often heard it said by fellow Spiritualists that “Nothing happens by chance.” Let’s explore that idea a little. If nothing happens by chance, does it not follow that everything must be planned or preordained? Yes – everything. That must include even the smallest of decisions or events, the minutiae of life and our existence. I wonder if this is viewed as applying to 54 PSYCHIC PSYCHICNEWS NEWS || MARCH 2022 2022 MEMBERS of Abba are welcomed at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. (Photo: doblecachanilla on Flickr) all forms of life, not just human life – to the falling of every leaf, the crashing of every wave on the beach, indeed every one of the billions of actions that take place every day across the small globe we call home. What of the billions of stars and planets that form our universe and the other known and unknown, seen and unseen, universes which are now being spoken of? It may seem that I am going over the top by expanding the idea to such a broad front, but if “Nothing happens by chance,” then including talking of everything seems reasonable and logical. If I question the notion that nothing happens by chance, then it is appropriate to ask how I do view chance and its relationship with the belief that everything is pre-planned. Before I deal with that question, I would remind you of the fifth of the Spiritualists’ National Union’s Seven Principles – Personal responsibility. How can I be held “responsible” if actions, reactions and consequences are all laid out in advance? Clearly I cannot be expected to accept responsibility in such circumstances. Thus the “Nothing happens by chance” idea clashes with this most fundamental and essential aspect of Spiritualist philosophy. Where does that leave us? As with all things in life, I believe that we cannot deal simply in black or white, in one view or its complete opposite, taking sides and quoting examples to support our own view. FEATURE Put another way, there is no “absolute,” whatever we are dealing with. There is no absolute truth, no absolute knowledge, no absolute right and no absolute wrong. What we believe to be truth or knowledge or right or wrong are only those things because we choose to accept them as such on the basis of the experiences we have undergone up to the present time or the experience of those whose ideas we accept as valid and valuable. What we decide to accept changes through our lives, as we all know from our own lives. As we gain more experience, we gain more understanding and more appreciation that change is inevitable and essential. We couldn’t get into our baby clothes as grown-ups; our minds have grown perhaps even to a greater extent than our bodies. I hope so because whilst our body reached a point where we stopped growing and have maintained a relatively constant height, weight and shape, I trust that our minds have continued to grow, to expand, to embrace and understand more with every passing day. My understanding as I write this, based on my 80 years (boy and man) as a Spiritualist, is that not everything is preordained, not every decision already made, not every choice already settled or not every result already known. I believe that chance does play a very important, large and a necessary part in the lives of all beings. At the present time, millions of UK citizens will be watching a series of international rugby games. Would anyone seriously suggest that when kicked and bouncing on the ground, the direction the oval ball takes is already determined? I do not – and cannot agree – with that idea. The ball will bounce in a random manner, which is part of the nature and the excitement of the game. So too with life, where it is the randomness and the lack of preknowledge that gives it much of its value, its excitement, its joy and above all its challenge. I do not believe that I am a puppet, controlled by and responding to a puppet master, even if I might have had a hand in preparing the screenplay followed by that master. A subject which has provoked much discussion over the years within Spiritualism is reincarnation. If there is a detailed blueprint produced in advance of our life (or lives?) in a physical form, who was the draughtsman who prepared it? Was it some “senior” being? Was it a solo creation or the result of a “committee”? Were we in on the planning or was it imposed? I don’t believe there is such a detailed blueprint for any of us. It may well be that there’s a rough sketch (drawn on the back of an envelope perhaps?) that shows certain points which are likely to be passed, events that could well happen and various dots that show a possible route. If this is the case, I believe it is we, individually, throughout our lifetimes that actually join up all those dots. Now I am going to throw a spanner in the works by telling you about events in my own life, which challenge the theories I have just been advancing. In 1984, I travelled to Sweden to attend and speak at an international Spiritualist event. This was held near a small town in the South, where one of the residents was a lady called Mayne. She did not to attend that week because HERE is how one artist depicted reincarnation. (Photo: Himalayan Academy Publications, Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii) of her circumstances at the time and we did not meet. Three years later, the next conference was held in London. Mayne had a close friend who planned to attend, along with her daughter and her daughter’s American husband. She asked Mayne to come along, so that she would not be the “third wheel.” Never having been to the UK before, Mayne agreed. Then Mayne’s friend suddenly passed. The daughter still wanted Mayne to take part, telling her that the deposit and flights had been paid and she was booked (not quite true!), so with some reluctance, Mayne agreed to make the trip. Thus in 1987 we were in the same place at the same time, met, felt an instant connection and a few months later, after journeys in both directions, got engaged. My question is this: was our meeting and the subsequent events meant to be? My answer is a resounding “Yes!” but can I reconcile that answer with the arguments I put forward earlier, and if so how? I go back to my suggestion that there are no simple answers and no fixed and immutable rules. I am totally committed to the idea that chance is an essential part of all our lives. That said, I also believe that in the lives of each of us there are events and circumstances which are likely to happen, are expected to happen and meant to happen. I do not see any problem in accepting a middle route that encompasses both the “Nothing happens by chance” doctrine and the “Some things are the result of unexpected, unplanned and uncontrolled events and situations” idea. It may well be that wiser souls and more knowledgeable beings can show me that the stance I have taken is mistaken, based on flawed premises, lacking in logic and clarity. I never ask others to accept my ideas without giving them careful thought. Indeed, if those ideas are rejected I make the assumption that such careful consideration has been exhibited. I am no “righter” or “wronger” than anyone else about anything. If a more cogent and convincing argument is presented, I will consider and perhaps accept it. Even at 80, I like to think that I am still open to expand my knowledge and understanding. If each of us cannot say that, then one of life’s major lessons has yet to be learned. Remember that childhood teaser: what is the biggest room in the world? Room for improvement. Never stop searching, learning or growing, as you become closer to the truly great spiritual being that each of us has the potential to be. There may be a border already defining the picture that represents us, but like a jigsaw puzzle, there are many pieces to fit in place. Some of those pieces have yet to be made. So, what have got you to lose? Perhaps now is the time to “Take a Chance” on each other, ourselves and life. n A quick word about my own health. Children need physical and spiritual nurturing, and this book is about providing spiritual nourishment to children. “What if, instead of discouraging children’s spiritual growth, parents could be educated about the spiritual world? Embrace the love, forgiveness, faith and non-judgemental behavioural strategies to nourish the intuitive side of children and their families. Our world needs our children to understand what true love and acceptance really is.” ENLIGHTENMENT IN A CAFÉ By A. R. Matkins RRP £9.99 US$13.67 104 pages The author writes: “There are moments when you can be caught up in a creative space where there is a need to pick up a notebook and pen the words that pour into your mind and flow onto the page. “Enlightenment in a café came into being whilst I sat in a café with a cup of coffee and found myself writing words of comfort and wisdom that gave encouragement and insight when I most needed them. “I knew these words were inspired by a connection with a spirit guide and other spiritual beings who simply described themselves as ‘Messengers.’ My own thoughts had been put to one side as other voices added theirs.” 56 PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 ENLIGHTENED DOG TRAINING Become the peaceful alpha your dog needs and respects By Jesse Sternberg RRP UK £6.99 US $14.99 221 pages The publisher writes: “Are you aware of the body signals through which your dog shares his or her perspective of the world with you? “Understanding the language of your pet allows you to communicate better and naturally transform your dog into a calm, relaxed companion for life. “In this guide, meditation teacher and dog trainer Jesse Sternberg reveals the principles of the secret language of the animal kingdom and offers commonsense yet unique solutions to everyday canine behavioural problems. “Using case studies that resonate with every pet owner and dog lover, he explains how most of our pets’ issues arise from intense feelings caused by the environment, ourselves or prior conditioning and how these emotions are acted out by the dog. “Combining mindfulness teachings with animal psychology, Jesse suggests training exercises and powerful meditative practices to do with your pet as well as on your own to help build a calm and peaceful mindset for both your dog and yourself, so eventually you will find yourselves aligned and able to gracefully master even unexpected situations. “Enlightened Dog Training offers unique training techniques for soothing anxiety, healing neuroses, overcoming aggression issues and transforming tension into harmony. Communicate nonverbally with your dog using the signals dogs use with each other and address problems with leash training and guarding resources and territory.” THE SOUL’S BRAIN The neurology and logic of your intuition By Dr Catherine Wilkins RRP £12.99 US $24.84 320 pages The publisher writes: “Your intuition holds the key to a truly inspired life. It can, however, bring with it an increased sensitivity so overwhelming that some find it hard to operate in day-to-day life. Others feel foolish or weird when acknowledging their intuition. “In a world focused on science we have amazing technology and vast physical abundance. However, ignoring our intuition has deprived us of untold benefits in our careers, well-being, and relationships. “The Soul’s Brain reveals the principles of conscious intuition. These principles are part of the structure of our universe, forming patterns in our lives which are as fundamental as breathing. Knowing these patterns allows you to translate between intuition and science. “Understanding the neurology and logic of your intuition will allow you live a truly brilliant and inspired life. “Catherine Wilkins guides you through the nine-step process to conscious intuition. You will learn how tuning into your intuition is a skill like any other – all it takes is knowledge and practice. “Science and spirituality have a common language. You don’t need to choose between science and intuition: you can use both together to achieve your full potential.” RUNES MADE EASY Harness the magic of the ancient northern oracle By Richard Lister RRP UK £10.99 US $15.99 257 pages The publisher writes: “The runes are some of the most powerful divination and communication tools available. When we learn how to use them, they can provide much needed support and guidance. “Runes have been marvelled at and studied throughout history. They are more than just a method of words and writing: each rune has a phonetic sound, similar to the sounds heard in Norwegian or Icelandic. They were used to communicate, for divination, to provide guidance and were also bound together to make magic spells. “With this insightful, practical book, Richard Lister provides a resource that you can use to build your knowledge and develop your own relationship with the runes. In Runes Made Easy, you will discover: • An introduction to Norse mythology and the role of the runes within it • What each of the runes mean • Translations of original Viking texts • How to use and work with each rune • How to make your own set of runes, which materials to use and how the material you choose impacts the energy and resonance of the runes • How to set an intention for your rune use “The runes, if used and treated with respect and honour, provide a support system and life-navigation tool for those keen to learn more about the ancient power of the Vikings, the runes and their magic.” BODY HEALING CARDS By Ewald Kliegel and Anne Heng RRP UK £25.00 US $25.00 The publisher writes: “A fullcolour card deck to intuitively explore the interconnected nature of the organs and the health of body, mind and spirit. “The deck presents 56 beautifully illustrated cards that depict the physical, soul and spiritual layers of our organs and anatomy. “The accompanying guidebook explains how to use the cards, offers a channelled message for each card, and helps you develop strategies for resolving stressful situations around your health.” A YEAR OF MYSTICAL THINKING Make life feel magical again By Emma Howarth RRP UK £12.99 US $17.99 288 pages The publisher writes: “What if you could find inner peace right where you are? No one-way ticket to paradise required “After a terrible year, feeling burned out and broken, Emma Howarth decided to go on a year-long mystical adventure from the comfort of her own home. The result was a year that changed everything. A year that turned frantic chaos into life in the slow lane. A year of magic and moonlight and pink sky sunrises. A year fragranced with incense and burning herbs (that sometimes smelled suspiciously illegal). “A Year of Mystical Thinking is Emma’s witty and life-affirming account of the year that transformed her world. Each month she introduces a new spiritual practice with practical, actionable tips from how to create the perfect vision board to living by the phases of the moon. “Join Emma on her journey as she connects with spirit guides in February, obsesses over astrology in August and learns about reiki in November.” EMPATH ACTIVATION CARDS Discover your cosmic purpose By Rev Stephanie Red Feather RRP UK £23.00 US $34.50 The publisher writes: “Presenting high-vibration activational messages, this oracle deck and book set is designed to help you remember your true nature as a being of light, access your cosmic mission and raise your vibratory frequency. “Reverend Stephanie Red Feather hand-painted the art on each of the 44 full-colour cards, imbued with sacred geometric symbols and patterns from nature and the cosmos. “They serve as a tool of transmission, engaging you on multiple levels of consciousness and allow you to receive whatever activation, message or inspiration from The Source you need in the moment. “The art is also intentionally embedded with activational frequencies to help you ‘turn on’ your light codes, retrieve ancient wisdom stored in your soul’s memory from enlightened times and transmit signals from The Source, which land like seeds in the mind and flower into higher knowledge. “In the accompanying guidebook, Stephanie explains how the oracle can be used as a self-guided initiation into the mysteries of higher consciousness. “Drawing on astrophysics, biology, geology and quantum mechanics, as well as ancient mystical traditions, she shows how the cards can be divided into four groups, each representing a distinct initiatory path and acting as a cosmic mission activation launch sequence.” Please contact us if you have recently had a non-fiction spiritual book or oracle deck published Email details to: pnadverts@gmail.com PSYCHIC NEWS | MARCH 2022 57 CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING READINGS VIOLET MOON Spiritual Centre PSYCHIC POSTAL READING £15 KELLY CUMMING 24 Baglan Heights, Port Talbot Wales SA12 8UF Ruskin House, Nelson Mandela Room, 23 Coombe Road Croydon CR0 1BD JAMES - Medium Telephone Readings £15 by appointment Tel: 07494 897937 CLAIRVOYANT READINGS Palmistry included if able to send photos of both hands front and back, stating right or left handed.
