WEEK 1 CHEERDANCING
Before tryouts, prepare:
1. Medical certification- to assess health and fitness
2. Parental consent
3. Must be able to do stunts and other gymnastic skills (tumbling, split, being a stuntman)
Tryouts
-screening to get the best cheer dancers
Elements of cheerdance routine:
1. Dance Techniques
- some may prefer contemporary dance techniques or some incorporate dance, hihop, traditional dance,
modern dance, ballet, etc.
-Dancers usually perform hiphop dance (most, if not all)
- in order to catch the attention of audience and judges, from start to finish, they must think of a
choreography that is impressive (most esp. In the entrance part)
-cheerdancers must be energetic and confident until the end= they give all they have and they must be
synchronized. (ex: UAAP and NCAA cheerdance competition)
-dancers have the freedom to choose dance genre- there are no guidelines or themes that needs to be
followed. = as long as they adhere the safety of the competition guidelines.
2. Elements of cheers
- cheers= organized words that the cheerdancers shout
-purpose: to draw a unified response from the crowd to highlight their support for the team.
-Cheer motion= made up of arm, hand and body motion or position.
3. They have to have basic gymnastic skills
- tumblings, splits, bendings, jumps
-there should always be a proper execution of these
- elements of jump:

-needs stamina, flexibility and strength and good/ enough training to execute the movements well (master
the movements)
- Tumbling= to cheer a crowd and impress judges and audience
Basic Formations
1. Bowling Pin Formation
- like a triangle; pagkakaarange ng bowling pin sa bowling alley
2. Staggered Line formation/ windows
-windows (if there are 3 in front, there are two at the back
3. Reverse Bowling Pins
-Backwards triangle
4. Diamond
5. Diagonals
6. Partners- side by side or in front and back
7. Block- in one line
Cheerdance
- there is a mixture of musics (remix of musics)
- there can also be a drama (insert a slow tempo music)= not beyond 8 counts to maintain energetic
disposition and maintain climax; otherwise= the audience may be bored.
Cheer sections
-support to the school that the cheerleaders represent
-cheerleaders must show the mastery of movements (synchronization, stunts and cheer as well.
Different Popular Cheerdance Competitions- annual (in universities of metro manila)
1. UAAP
2. NCAA
- Whoever wins, may represent the country in global contests

WEEK 2 (Dance Sport)
DANCE SPORT
- combination of art and sport
-competitive ballroom dancing as contrasted to exhibition or social dancing
-ex: wheelchair dance sport= at least one of the dancers is in the wheelchair; ang nakatayo ay nagpeperform
ng proper feet movements; the other (in wheelchair) uses upper body.
- importance: same with the importance and benefits of dancing in general.
- combines sport and dance which allows participants to improve physical health and improve social
connections and mental health
HISTORY
- The first unofficial DanceSport World Championship took place in 1909, and the first Formation Team
was presented in 1932 by Olive Ripman at the Astoria Ballroom in London.
-Dancesport was first broadcasted in TV in 1960
-main rule: dancers are entirely prohibited from any doping substance that enhance their abilities, like
steroids which enhances the ability of the performer= stronger
-it is exhausting bec. It has a lot of movements that are snappy, which is why sometimes they dancers take
prohibited drugs.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF DANCE SPORTS
1. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
-used to be called modern
A. ) WALTZ
- performed during debut
-highly popular ballroom dance that evolved during 18th century
B. ) TANGO
- partner and social dance originated in Rio de la Plata= na original border in Argentina and Uruguay
- originated in 1980s (?)
C. )SLOW FOXTROT
- smooth progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements similar to waltz
D. ) QUICKSTEP
- movement of dance is fast and powerful
- a light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances
E. ) VIENNESE WALTZ
- a rotary dance where the dancers are constantly turning either clockwise or counterclockwise
- consists of turns and chain steps (?)
2. LATIN DANCE OR LATIN-AMERICAN
A. ) CHACHACHA
- lively and fun dance that really gets you moving on the dance floor. Quite similar to the Rumba and
Mambo
-lively, fun, cheeky and playful dance
-originated in Cuba
- dancers keep on moving back and forth, side to side and turns
B. ) SAMBA
- fun, upbeat and lively dance that progresses counterclockwise turns around the floor
-performed during carnival times
C. RUMBA
-distinctive side to side movements
-dance na parag nang seseduce ng boy partner bec of the hip movements
-it began as a fast and sensual dance with exaggerated hip movements.
-Rumba is universally recognized as the dance of love. It is danced to slow, sensual music with a Latin beat
and features a hip action known as “Cuban Motion.”
D. PASO DOBLE
-steering and dramatic dance based on spanish bull fight
-men= matador (nakahawak ng red cape); red cape= female
E. JIVE
- a very happy and energetic dance
-fastest of all the latin dances
- incorporates lots strong kicks, flicks, snappy movements and even curling of a woman when the dancers
don’t move around the dance floor.
- most of the time, Jive is always included among the three dances in competitive dance competitions.
