To develop curiosity for the learners about the world they live in. OBJECTIVES KNOWLEDGE Learners should know the dates and seasons associated with the equinoxes. Learners should know what causes the equinoxes. SKILLS Learners should be able to explain what an equinox is. Learners should be able explain when the equinox happens. VALUES Learners should be able to value the earth they live in. Learners should be able to value our earth and respect it. APPROACH Whole class discussion. Explanation. Question and answer. Demonstration. RESOURCES Video INTRODUCTION The class will be divided into two equal groups, the first group will have to count the second group and the second group will also do the same. The learners will then be asked what they notice after counting each other. The meaning equi will be given which means equal and the meaning of nox which means night. DEVELOPMENT STEP ONE The definition of equinox will also be given which means equal night and equal. The hours of day are equal to the hours of night. 24 / 2 = 12 There are two times when the tilt of the Earth is zero, meaning that the tilt is neither away from the Sun nor toward the Sun. These are the vernal equinox the first day of spring and the autumnal equinox the first day of fall. STEP TWO The dates of equinox will be given which is the 21st of March and the 23rd of September every year. During this time the sun is over the equator, and in between the tropics, tropic of cancer and tropic of Capricorn. STEP THREE The types of equinoxes will be explained. The vernal equinox is an equinox that happens in the beginning of Spring, and the autominal equinox. STEP FOUR A video showing visuals of equinox will then be played so learners will understand better. CONSOLIDATION 1. What is an equinox? 2. Explain when the equinox happens and give their names. ASSESSMENT 1. Assessment on individual work. REFERENCES CAPS – Social Sciences Teacher’s Guide: Social Sciences: Grade 8. Learners Book (Solutions for all: Map Skills): Social Sciences: Grade 8. To develop curiosity for the learners about the world they live in. Understand and work with a range of sources including maps, data and photographs OBJECTIVES KNOWLEDGE Learners should know the dates and seasons associated with the solstices. Learners should know what causes the solstices. RESOURCES Video INTRODUCTION The learners will be grouped into two groups with uneven numbers the one group will have a smaller number and the other will have a lager number. The learner will the be asked what they noticed. DEVELOPMENT STEP ONE Solstices will be defined as the dates of the year when one hemisphere has the longest number of hours of daylight and the opposite hemisphere has the has the shortest hours of daylight. STEP TWO The names of the solstices will be given the Summer solstices and the winter solstices. The Summer solstices takes place on the 21st of December and is the longest day of the year and the sun is directly above the tropic of Capricon, the winter solstices makes the beginning of winter which is the 21st of June and the sun is directly above the Cancer and is the shortest day of the year. STEP THREE The seasons associated with the solstices will be explained which are winter and summer. The 21st of June where the Winter solstices takes place and the 21st of December where the Summer solstices takes place. CONSOLIDATION 1. What are the solstices? 2. Explain do the solstices happens and give their names. 3. Which seasons are associated with the solstices. ASSESSMENT 1. Assessment on individual work.
