Traditionally, housing styles have been largely regional. For example,
in the Southeast homeowners favored plantation style homes with
wide front porches, steep roofs, intricate gables and lots of space.
In the Northeast you found a lot of Cape Cod and Victorian-style
homes, especially on the coast.
As demographics shift and technological advances allow for more
remote work, we see housing styles that were once prevalent in
specific parts of the country pop up in new places as people take the
styles they prefer with them when they migrate across regions. For
instance, modern and contemporary homes that once dominated the
Northwest and West Coast are now growing in popularity throughout
the South and Midwest.

GETTING BACK
T O N AT U R E
Study after study has shown the importance of spending time
in nature. It improves our physical and mental health and helps
us feel more centered. So it’s no wonder more homeowners are
building vacation homes that have wood-inspired fiber cement
siding for a more natural feel and large walls of windows so
they get plenty of natural light and blissful landscapes.

DREAM

For some homeowners, their idea of connecting with
nature involves sand and water. But coastal homes bring
their own challenges to your exterior design thanks to
salty air and severe wind. Your siding needs to provide
beautiful coastal style—try a cream, blue and tan color
palette and lots of windows—and also be able to
handle the severe weather you’re likely to encounter.
Fiber cement siding from Nichiha meets and exceeds
wind load requirements in coastal areas, including the
stringent Miami-Dade HVHZ codes.
You can get the beach-home vibes you want without
sacrificing the high-performance or durability that
your coastal location demands.

During high winds, wind can slip under lap siding and create strain, using the
boards like a lever to lift them off the home. The smaller the board profile, the
higher the wind load rating. For more information, visit How Nichiha Meets Wind

AT T R A C T
One of the biggest trends of the past two years is white
siding paired with black trim and black roofs — and it shows
no signs of slowing down. It’s a stunning look that provides
depth to your exterior, highlighting your windows, doors and
roofline to ensure they capture passersby’s attention.
To help your home stand out even more, try using the siding
panels in both vertical and horizontal orientations. The high
contrast color combination combined with a unique installation
style will give your home a look that will be the highlight of
your neighbor’s evening strolls.

Home trends are leaning towards the more
adventurous these days, with an increase in
modern and contemporary styles. But even
if your taste leans to a more traditional
aesthetic, your home can still make a bold
statement by incorporating color into your
exterior design.

MODERN
DESIGN
Modern design has become increasingly popular. Featuring
sharp, clean lines, a limited color palette and repetitive
shapes, simpler is better when it comes to this style — but
that doesn’t mean it has to be boring.
Most people think of minimalist design when they hear
modern, but that’s not always the case. Minimalist design
features a monochromatic color palette, while modern
features several neutral colors combined. Modern design
uses purposeful decorative elements, while minimalist
design focuses purely on function.

MID-CENTURY MODERN
Popular from the mid-1940s to 1960s, Mid-Century
Modern is a classic design style that features
uncluttered, sleek lines, minimal ornamentation
and the juxtaposition of contrasting materials.
Flat or gabled roofs, dramatic edges and large
windows are all hallmarks of the mid-mod style.
Try pairing natural textures on your siding such
as concrete, redwood or stone in a neutral color
palette to accentuate your design.

If you thought farmhouse style was going to fade out
quickly, you’d be mistaken. Popularized in 2015, the
style is still going strong (thanks Chip and Joanna!).
It’s one of those styles that you know as soon as you
see it.
Elements include lots of white, rustic, warm wood
and barn-style lighting. Add in a few vintage touches,
distress some of that white, and you’ve got yourself
a style that is in high demand.

BOARD + BATTEN CAN’T BE BEAT | As exterior cladding, board and batten adds
a more homely or rustic feel to a home’s design. This style can also be used inside
the home and is popular in mudrooms, hallways and dining areas.
Who says you have to use wood to get a board and
batten design? While this popular home style was first
created with wood, today it can be made with any siding
material, including fiber cement. All you need is two
different width boards, one wide and one narrow, to
alternate, and you end up with an iconic look that is
beautiful no matter where your home is located.

There’s nothing like watching the sunset with a cold drink after
a long day of work. Fresh air is proven to lower blood pressure
and heart rate, increase mental clarity and increase happiness.
Those all sound like great benefits to us.
To take advantage of the fresh air, include a patio or deck in your
custom home. If you are worried about getting too much sun,
you can install a pergola over the area or extend an overhang off
your home to provide cover. To make the space stand out, try
using a different style of siding under your covering.

YOUR
INTERIOR
By using architectural wall panels on the exterior of
your home, you’re improving air quality on the inside
as well. That’s because our panels have a built-in
rainscreen system that allows for air movement and
drainage. This improves the longevity of the siding
while allowing moisture from the wall cavity and
weather to escape maintaining a dry, healthy structure.
But the best exterior siding materials don’t have to
stay outside — they can come inside as well. You can
extend your design into your entryway and down
your hallways for a cohesive look that will make your
