Christmas Carol Context revision.
Written in 1834, when there was the industrial revolution. Many people
moved to the city from the countryside and lift in housing which was appalling.
Money made the rich, richer and the poor had to work long shifts and children
didn’t go school as they had to work long hours for little money.
Almost 1 In 5 children died in the poorest areas of Britain as they were drinking
populated water and had tuberculosis. Which claimed the lives pf 70000
people. As there was no healthcare.
For people who couldn’t support themselves, there were workhouses which
were very unpleasant. Many families were separated here. Those who couldn’t
pay debts had to go to prison for example Charles Dicken’s father.
Charles Dickens contextHe was born on the February 7th, 1812, First 9 years he lived in the coastal
region of Kent, and when he was 9 his family moved to London. At 12 his
father was sent to debtor’s prison. His mother of 7 arranged the children to
live in prison but Charles to live alone and was working at a blacking
warehouse in hellish environment.
After his father retuned from the prison his father sent him to school, and he
eventually became a law clerk. At 25 Dickens completed his first Novel The
Pickwick Papers, which was a great success, and from here he started his
career.
