Scoring: The first thing you must do is to reverse the items that are worded in the opposite direction.
In order to do this, subtract the number you put for that item from 6. So if you put a 4, for instance, it
will become a 2. Cross out the score you put when you took the scale, and put the new number in
representing your score subtracted from the number 6.
Items to be reversed in this way: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20
Next, you need to add up the scores for each of the five OCEAN scales (including the reversed
numbers where relevant).
Each *OCEAN SCORE will be the sum of four items. Place the sum next to each scale below.
_____18_____ Openness: Add items 5, 10, 15, 20
_____14_____ Conscientiousness: Add items 3, 8, 13, 18
_____10_____ Extraversion: Add items 1, 6, 11, 16
_____17_____ Agreeableness: Add items 2, 7, 12, 17
_____9_____ Neuroticism: Add items 4, 9, 14, 19
Compare your scores to the norms below to see where you stand on each scale. If you are low on a
trait, it means you are the opposite of the trait label. For example, low on Extraversion is Introversion,
low on Openness is Conventional, and low on Agreeableness is Assertive.
19–20 Extremely High,
17–18 Very High,
14–16 High,
11–13 Neither high nor low; in the middle,
8–10 Low,
6–7 Very low,
4–5 Extremely low
Guide Questions: Answer the following questions in an essay form with a maximum of 300 words.
Write your answers in a clean sheet of paper. Take a photo and turn it in using GED 101 group chat
via FB (10 points each).
1. How do you describe your scores on Mini IPIP Scale? Do you think the results are accurate?
Why?
It is incredibly true that the score that I got on the Mini IPIP Scale define who I am. The
number of points that I got are sometimes very high or low depending on the traits that being
examined. My ratings to each one of the situation may be different, however, the outcome will
always be the same as it is the reflection of what personality I have as a person.
In line with this, the results that I got in each trait are different from each other but it is
so accurate. Like on ”Openness” and “Agreeableness”, I got “very high” as a result, and it’s
right since, I’m the type of person who like creativity and wants to see and discover new things
that is beyond reality. Moreover, most of the time, I tended to agree on others opinion and
prioritize others need over my own. Likewise, I got “High” as the result on “conscientiousness”
which is also true for whenever there are school activities, as much as possible I don’t want to
pass it late. I also want my workplace to be organized and neat. On the other hand, in terms of
“extraversion” and “neuroticism”, I got “low” as result which is also accurate because I’m an
introvert person and I prefer quiet place than being on the party. Furthermore, I’m always tend
to be calm even I’m in the middle of chaos.
Taking everything into account, the result in Mini IPIP Scale was reliably and accurate.
It helps us to easily interpret and understand ourselves specifically our personality trait as an
individual. In my case, the results suit who and what really I am as a person whereas I am me.
2. Do you think personality changes through time? How?
Personality is a kind of phenomenon that evolves and develops even with just a span
period, that’s why I do believe that one’s personality changes through time. To support my
claim, Brent Roberts’ as cited by Whitcomb (2020) asserts that, personality is a developmental
phenomenon. It’s not a fixed thing that we can’t neither improve nor change. However, there
are still people whose confuse on how our personality changes through time. Thus, this paper
will shed light on how those changes occur.
It is undeniably true that time is constantly changing and along with these changes
was also our own personality development wherein here comes the so-called “maturity”.
People tend to develop their personality traits and be mature through time. This is because as
time pass by, the people will get more experience and adopt a certain behavior that will put
their personality to change and be in a better frame . Moreover, concurrent with the changes
in time is the change in the environment and situation in which we currently find ourselves, and
this alters one personality to be well-fitted and appropriate to that specific environment and
situation; thus, time plays a significant role in our personality changes.
To conclude, as time goes by, one person will be mature enough and will be able to
enhance and change his/her personality for the better because our personality is not a onetime occurrence that you’re stuck and will not be able to change. Time is the cause of factors
and culmination of why a person’s personality change and improve. But, always remember that
no matter how quickly time affects our changes, we must always choose to change for the
better because our personality traits are the reflection of ourselves.
3. Discuss how we develop our personality.
Development of our personality begins in understanding ourselves--- who we are, what we
are and what personality traits do we possess. There are many factors that influenced the
development of our personality including biological factors, environment, culture and situations. As
these factors continue to concur, they produce the same effect of improving our personality. Thus,
let me use the acronym BECS to elaborate how this development occur.
First, the Biological Factor of Personality, wherein it can be hereditary factors, brain and
physical features like height, weight, and body language which we can enhance over time like our
personality. Here comes the so-called “maturity principle” which simultaneously mature our body
and matures our mentality. Second, Environmental Factor of Personality, which not just about the
places where we live and grow but it also involves the people around us. It is undeniably true that
there are times that people around us--- our friends, family or other people can influence our
thoughts, feelings and behavior. These places and people make us experience things that
eventually become the reason of the development of our personality. Next is the Cultural Factors
of personality wherein our beliefs, values and personality changes depending to where culture we
belong. We’ve grown accustomed to conforming to our culture. Our personalities, including our
beliefs, have been shaped by or culture. And lastly, the Situational Factors of Personality wherein
it alters how one person behave to a certain situation. Any various situation that people faced,
whether it is good or a bad experience, help to shape their personalities and contribute to who
they are today.
In conclusion, when the genes we are born with was combined with the environment and
culture we are raised, as well as the situation we face, they will result in a well-developed
personality we have today as an adult.
4. Differentiate personality from self.
It is frequently asked by everyone "how does your personality differ from your self?".
Maybe some of you are also wondering about their differences, since those two are undeniably
confusing in some aspects. Hence, this paper will give you a vivid interpretation of the
differences that run beneath personality and self.
In most cases, personality is a part of what makes up a person---its thoughts, feelings, and
behavior, while self is the essential being of a person, which is a combination of our identity,
most likely our personality traits, abilities, and physical attributes. Furthermore, personality is
the kind of feelings, thoughts, and behavior we possess. That’s why we have the so-called
"good personality" and "bad personality", which depends on the traits that we have. On the
other hand, our self is what we are. It is our image as an individual. Our personality and traits
are like an egg wherein the shell serves as our self while the yolk inside represents our
personality. To simplify, just like an egg shell, our self is our representation and what’s visible
to others, while our personality is what we possess inside. Thus, our personality is a subset of
our self.
All in all, self is a broad category that includes many different perspectives about who a person
is, which is contrary to personality, because it is more specific and has fewer aspects.
Nevertheless, even if personality and self have differences, they are still connected because
our personality is part of our self.
5. How will you answer the question, “Who am I?”
!“ Who am I?”. A simple question but complicated to answer. When I was a child, whenever I was
asked “who am I?” I always answered my name--- Katrina Chariss C. Caubalejo, because I
thought that’s the limit of this question. However, now that I grow up, I can fully understand that
the question “who am I” is wider and more complicated than I thought. But, how should we really
answer the question “who am I?” or is there really a proper way to answer it?
Nowadays, I am on the process of understanding myself. Little by little, I can decipher the kind of
personality and identity I have as a person. So, at this point, if I was asked “who am I” I can
confidently answer, I am simple college girl named Katrina who prefers quiet and less crowded
places, an introvert, a girl loves to see arts and new things that’s beyond reality, and most
importantly I am dreamer who wants to be a Certified Public Accountant in the near future. Hence,
this is who I am, and I believe that I am unique in my own way.
Taking everything into conclusion, it is my belief that answering the question “who am I” can’t be
wrong as long as you express and tell who you really are and the motives of your action.
Answering the question of who am I leading to understanding our own self, wherein all of us is
different from each other
