Can the rise of extreme right be a
threat to Europe’s stability?
What History
teaches us
Question 1: The road to fascism
· Search information about the implementation of dictatorships and
totalitarian regimes in Europe during the interwar years.
· Draw a map using Maphub and include the following metadata for each
country:
→ Year when the dictatorship/totalitarian regime started;
→ Colour them red if the regime was forced by violence;
→ Colour them yellow if the regime started by any other means
(elections, social or political pressure, etc. but no direct violence).
· Do you see any kind of pattern?
· Search information about the social-economic situation in those countries:
→ Unemployment, GDP (lower or higher than Europe’s average), % of
foreign-born population.
Question 2: The road to postfascism
· Search information about the entry of far-right parties in European
parliaments from 2000 to 2022.
· Draw a map using Maphub and include the following metadata for each
country:
→ Year when the far-right party entered the parliament;
→ Percentage of seats;
→ Colour them with a gradient depending on the number of seats.
· Do you see any kind of pattern?
· Search information about the economic situation in those countries:
→ Unemployment, GDP (lower or higher than Europe’s average), % of
foreign-born population.
Question 3: The roads compared
· Compare the patterns (if any) in the maps drawn.
· Summarise the data for the countries studied in a table
· Do you see any links or pattern in the table between social-economic
conditions and dictatorship/rise of far-right?
· What came after the consolidation of Fascism and Nazism in Italy and
Germany is well known, so...
Essay: The road to repeat History
Write an essay in which you address these topics:
· To what extent were dictatorships/rise of far-right predictable?
· How can relate the entry of far right parties in European parliaments in the
early 21st century to the implementation of dictatorships in the early 20th?
· How could these parties destabilise Europe, the EU and the processes of
European convergence?
· What kind of measures do you think could the EU or its Member States
take to prevent it?
