DIAGNOSTIC IMPRESSIONS AND INTERPRETATIONS:
To assess Tanya’s cognitive functioning, the standard battery of the Woodcock Johnson IV Tests
of Cognitive Abilities (WJIV-COG) was administered from which his composite scores of
General Intellectual Ability (GIA) and Gf-Gc Composite (Gf-Gc) are derived. The WJIV-COG
can be used to provide information on overall intellectual functioning and to identify specific
cognitive strengths and weaknesses. The GIA is derived from a combination of seven tests and is
considered the best single predictor of overall school achievement. The Gf-Gc is an alternative
composite score derived from four tests that can be useful in identifying students for gifted and
talented programs as well as in determining the presence of a learning disability.
On the WJIV-COG, Tanya, with a chronological age of 7 years, 0 month, obtained a GIA of 93
classifying her overall intellectual functioning within the Average range. The chances are about
95 out of 100 that Tanya’s true GIA would fall between 86 and 100. Her GIA is ranked at the
32nd percentile, indicating that she scored higher than 32% of other individuals her age. In
addition to GIA, Tanya’s overall intellectual functioning can be gleaned from her Gf-Gc
composite. She obtained a Gf-Gc of 109 classifying her within the Average range. The chances
are about 95 out of 100 that Tanya’s true Gf-Gc would fall between 99 and 119. Her Gf-Gc is
ranked at the 88th percentile, indicating that she scored higher than 88% of other individuals her
age.
To understand more about Tanya’s intellectual functioning and to determine her cognitive
strengths and weaknesses, performance in broad and narrow abilities are further explained in the
paragraphs below.
Comprehension-Knowledge (Gc)
Comprehension-Knowledge is derived from two tests and measures verbal ability in terms of
knowledge and skills to communicate linguistic-based knowledge and to reason using previously
learned experiences and procedures. On the Comprehension-Knowledge, Tanya’s abilities are
within the Average range and exceed 85% of individuals her age. Within the Comprehension-Knowledge
cluster, Tanya has Average ability to succeed on tasks requiring knowledge of words and their
associated meanings identify words and provide associated meanings. Similarly, Tanya has
Average ability in general verbal information, specifically referring to tasks that require locating
an objects and what people typically do with an object.
Fluid Reasoning (Gf)
Fluid Reasoning is derived from two tests and measures the ability to reason, form concepts, and
solve problems using unfamiliar information of novel procedures. On the Fluid Reasoning,
Tanya’s abilities are within the Superior range and exceed 99.7% of individuals her age. Within
the Fluid Reasoning cluster, Tanya has Average ability in quantitative and inductive reasoning,
specifically on tasks that require identifying and applying a rule to complete a numerical
sequence. Similarly, Tanya has Superior ability in categorical reasoning and executive
processing, specifically on tasks that require identifying, categorizing, and determining rules.
Short-term Working Memory (Gwm)
Short-term Working Memory is derived from two tests and measures the ability to encode,
maintain, and manipulate information in immediate awareness. On the Short-term Working
Memory, Tanya’s abilities are within the Average range and exceeds 51% of individuals her age.
Within the Short-term Working Memory cluster, Tanya has Average ability in verbal working
memory, specifically on tasks that require answering questions based on verbally presented
strings of unrelated objects, names, and numbers. Similarly, Tanya has Average ability to
temporarily store and recode orally presented information, specifically on tasks that require
remembering a series of serially presented numbers and then perform a complex processing task
of reversing the sequence of numbers.
Cognitive Efficiency
Cognitive Efficiency is derived from two tests and measures complex cognitive functioning that
involves processing speed and short-term working memory. On the Cognitive Efficiency,
Tanya’s abilities are within the Average range and exceeds 65% of individuals her age. Within
the Cognitive Efficiency cluster, Tanya has Very Low ability in processing speed, specifically on
tasks that require to make rapid visual discriminations by locating and circling two identical
letter patterns in a row of possible options. On the other hand, Tanya has Average ability to
temporarily store and recode orally presented information.
Summary and Recommendations
Tanya’s current overall intellectual functioning as measured by the GIA and Gf-Gc is
consistently within the Average range. She displays Superior abilities in the areas of quantitative
and verbal reasoning. He displays Average abilities in verbal comprehension and general
knowledge, short-term working memory and processing speed. In terms of specific cognitive
tasks, Tanya displays relative strength in visualization ability related to spatial relations and
block rotation. Her ability in categorical reasoning also stands as a strength. On the other hand,
Tanya displays relative weaknesses in rapid visual discrimination and auditory processing.
To improve Tanya’s cognitive weaknesses, the following related educational interventions or
accommodations are recommended.
1. Engage in activities that:
a) focus on learning and recognition of specific English-language spelling patterns;
b) emphasize perceptual speed through repetition;
c) Reduce quantity of work; and
d) Eliminate or limit copying activities.
2. Exposure to activities or games that:
a) focus the sounds in words;
b) increase production of words with the same sound;
c) intensive practice on word pronunciation; and
d) use of semantics in word instruction.
