HZT4U1-1A Ms.Watson Alisha Ali Philosophy Through Film- The Island Synopsis: In the mid-twentieth century, Lincoln Six-Echo is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility. Lincoln, like the other residents of this carefully regulated environment, hopes to be chosen to travel to "The Island," which is said to be the planet's last uncontaminated location. However, Lincoln eventually realizes that his entire existence is fiction. He, along with the rest of the facility's residents, are human clones whose sole function is to serve as "spare parts" for their human counterparts. Lincoln attempts a daring escape with a lovely fellow inmate named Jordan Two-Delta, knowing it's only a matter of time until he's "harvested." Lincoln makes a daring escape with Jordan Two-Delta, a lovely fellow resident. Lincoln and Jordan are relentlessly followed by the forces of the dark institute that formerly housed them, and they are in a race for their lives to meet their maker. Truth: The film looks at truth from coherence and pragmatic perspective. It’s coherence by looking at the cloning institution, the so-called clones were living their life with truth to a certain degree. From a pragmatic perspective, they would argue between the institution was a reasonable and logical way of doing things. The characters in the institution were erased from the truth because they were clones of people in the real world. They are used as subjects so the people in charge of the institution can create “life”. Lincoln Six-Echo's drive to find the truth tells us that human nature is to seek the truth. We all want to know the truth because not knowing it makes us frustrated and anxious wondering why don’t we know. The film reveals that truth can be difficult to find but it’s never impossible. It also shows that realizing that truth can fully overcome obstacles and seek justice. The institution implanted memories into clones they but there was something special about Lincoln Six-Echo he would have dreams of how own with memories which made him more human than the others. Once he told his “doctor” they would try to erase his memory or punish him trying to convince him that he was contaminated what he was seeing was not real. Lincoln Six-Echo was not convinced by the doctor he later snuck out of his room that night figured out that the doctor and institution were lying to them about the island, he figured out there was no island and was determined to find Ali 2 the truth. This demonstrates that concealing the truth will always push one even more to seek the truth. I connected with Lincoln Six-Echo because he reminds me of myself questioning life how do I know there's no other life, I’m sure if I was in another world just like Lincoln Six-Echo that I wasn’t even aware of I would like to figure out why am I’m being lied and concealed from the other world. The film did not offer truth to me because how do I know if I’m not living a life that’s being controlled by someone else like Lincoln Six-Echo how do I know I control my own life how am I certain that really I exist? Philosophical Questions: Many philosophers' questions were explored through the film. Lincoln Six-Echo has to hold on to the belief that there are certain truths because his memory doesn't allow him to store much information. He talks to the doctor about how he is distressed about how things are out of his control and wants to know he says " I wanna know answers, and I wish there was more" We can't, No matter how honest or real something may seem there is always the possibility of it being false or some manipulation of reality. When he thought he had found the truth to these questions there was always doubt. The film also attempts to answer if we even need certainty. Neither can be certain that this happened or is even possible. Nevertheless, they find their truth and reveal to the other colones move on with their lives. Thus answering truth can be found if one truly desires to find it Philosophy: The film relates to the coherence theory. The coherence theory states that we construct our beliefs and establish truth based on a coherent structure. It was based on this thinking and how truth is constructed, that Lincoln Six-Echo made his decision to follow the bug believes there's an outside world and not the island. The real world is more reasonable and made the most sense to his beliefs, versus the doctor's reasoning because he had lied to him and tried to keep him from asking questions about his life. he was always questioning how he could believe that he was right, how his reasoning made more sense than the doctor but made his decision nonetheless. Which was to escape the incision with Jordan Two-Delta to find his truth about life. This film poses a lot of philosophical concerns and shows how difficult it is to fully answer them, if it is even possible: The film makes the audience wonder about Ali 3 everything, especially their own existence. It also demonstrates how insecure they are about life, death, reality, and dreams. People are usually unaware of or unconcerned about, the nature of truth, specific knowledge, or reality itself, but this film makes them care. This film is unclear enough to leave us wondering about the answers, but just enough to remain mysterious: and we will always be theorizing. The movie makes the same point. Lincoln Six-Echo Felt that you couldn't establish the existence of god or the soul, which is similar to the film's message that we can't be sure our thoughts or memories are real. The film reminded me of Berkley merely because he believes, as the film suggests, that we may accept the existence of God. Berkley opposes the premise that our senses are proof of reality. The movie also looks at how our senses can be deceiving, since we can't even trust our own thoughts! The film The Island would undoubtedly be included in a list of philosophical films.
