Getting Through the Process While
Keeping Your Sanity.
This is not a DBQ step by step teaching guide!!
This PD covers effective & efficient strategies to
teach the DBQ without wasting class time.
Step by step plans for the DBQ can be found in the Project
manuals. (See Justin).
Keep in mind students have 90 minutes or less on
any standardized test to create a DBQ Essay!
So….
Make the skills needed second nature.
Teach the process step by step with the 1st
DBQ .
Shorten the modeling and instruction with
each future DBQ.
Your goal is total release students for a trial
test run.
Goal: Complete the process in 50
minutes independently

Methods for Analyzing
Activities to Shorten the Task
• Carousel Activity:
• Place each document in the middle of a larger white
paper
• Have students rotate using the analyzing methods to
annotate the importance of each document.
• Give 3-5 minutes depending on the document length.
• When done, Discuss as a class and have students take
notes in a graphic organizer.
***Suggestion: Also hang the activity papers for students
to refer to when writing.
• Text Rendering Group Activity:
• Divide in groups and give each group one
document to analyze.
• Using the prompt:
• Have students look for one sentence that
answers the question
• One phase
• One word
• Answer why their choices are relevant to
the prompt
• Share as a class.
• Have students record in a graphic
organizer as students are sharing.
• Divide and Conquer Jigsaw:
• Each student is given a document and
one single part of the analysis process
to find.
- Example: Using the SPY Method:
• one student summarizes one
of the documents
• one answers the prompt of
that document
• etc.
• Do a wrap-around aloud as students
discuss and record answers.
•
.
Padlet Group Activity:
The Outlines and Writing
• Start with modeling and outlines, but shorten
the process for future DBQ’s.
• Remember that standardized tests give about
60-90 minutes for the whole task.
• Go over the thesis and direction guidelines
carefully.
• Outline Examples:
• Language Arts DBQ Outline
• AP History DBQ Outline

Building Your Own
DBQ
• Consider building a DBQ using your content
• All DBQ’s should include:
• Background essay with a prompt
• Prompt should be controversial (multiple
correct points of view).
• Use 5-8 source documents that have multiple
viewpoints.
• Be sure students have enough information to
provide reasons for 2-3 body paragraphs.
• Be sure students have been taught enough
background to understand some of the
information presented.
The Following slides show an example of
the parts needed for an effective DBQ
