Setting the Scene: The Weird Sisters
Part I: After reading this brief scene, think about how you would direct it.
Setting: How will
you design your set?
What is on stage
during this scene?
Atmosphere: How
will you create
atmosphere? Will
there be thunder
and lightening?
What colors will you
use to create the
atmosphere you
want? How would
you use music or
sound to create the
best effect?
The Witches:
What will they look
like? Dirty and old
or dressed in
traditional flowing
black? Other ideas?
Will your audience
be able to see them
clearly or will they
be more mysterious?
Language: How
will your characters
speak?
Part II: Now that you have planned your main ideas, take the scene line by line and describe
how you would direct it and what each witch is doing. (You may make notes on this sheet or in
your books). You must explain how your witches would enter and exit, how they move, what
sound is heard, and how the witches look and sound.
Part III: Get up and act it out. You will present these to the class during the second half of the
period on Tuesday. If you want props or costumes, feel free, although they are not required.
Part IV: Explain in a one-page response how you have chosen to direct this scene. Make sure
you explain how your scene sets the mood for the rest of the play and why you think
Shakespeare decided to open with the witches. Please neatly handwrite your work. Make sure
your work is at least a page. You may type if you wish.

Macbeth Act I, Scene i
A desolate place
Thunder and lightning. Enter three witches.
First witch:
When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
Second witch:
When the hurly burly’s done,
When the battle’s lost and won.
Third witch:
That will be ere the set of sun.
First witch:
Where the place?
Second witch:
Upon the heath.
Third witch:
There to meet with Macbeth.
First witch:
I come, Graymalkin!
Second witch:
Paddock calls.
Third witch:
Anon.
All:
Fair is foul and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air.
