Essay about Ggender represantations
This is a short essay written to describe the differences and the similarities based on Gender
Represantations in the two pieces, A scene from a movie called,”Moana”, and the scene is
called,” Moana meets Maui” and the other piece is an extract from a short story written by
Charlotte Perkins called, “ The Yellow Wallpaper”. There are multiple similarities and
differences which can be perceived by the audience in terms of gender representation from the
two pieces, for example the tone of the characters in both the pieces and how female characters
are being serious and the male characters are disregarding their concern , as we can see the
person showing concern is a woman and the person disregarding the concern in both scenarios is
the man, we can see that there are gender-stereotypical issues being presented since the man is
showing, ‘dominance’ and the woman is just having to agree.
In the scene, “Moana meets Maui”, we can see that the character Moana is being serious as we
can see in 1:59 seconds of the scene when Moana is shouting a Maui, her mood is serious and
her tone is stern, but Maui completely disregards her concern as we can see from, 2:13 in the clip
when he is ignoring it. In the text we can see that when the writer is displaying concern, which is
visible when she says,”Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it.”, this
suggest that she believes that there is something unusual and peculiar about the Colonial
Mansion, and the man, whos name is, ‘John’ completely disregards her concern and laughs over
it, as we can see when the writer says, ‘John laughs at me’. The similarity is that the two texts
have gender representations where the man is taking control and ignoring what the womans
concern is, and is making the decision by himself, in both scenarios the womans voice is not
being heard and the man is taking charge.
In the scene from Moana, at 1:30 Maui says, he is the hero of both men and woman and what hes
suggesting is that he is not sexist, in the text the Narrator does not do any work since she is not
well and she is forbidden from doing the work by her brother and husband, even though she
believes that doing some work will do her good and make her feel better, her opinion is
disregarded. This is different from the scene in Moana because Maui is saying he is the hero to
women and men which is suggesting that he is not sexist and doesnt discriminate the two
genders, whereas in the text the men do not listen to the opinion of the woman and do what they
think is right.
To conclude the essay, This is a short essay written to describe the differences and the similarities
based on Gender Represantations in the two pieces, A scene from a movie called,”Moana”, and
the scene is called,” Moana meets Maui” and the other piece is an extract from a short story
written by Charlotte Perkins called, “ The Yellow Wallpaper”. There are multiple similarities and
differences which can be perceived by the audience in terms of gender representation from the
two pieces. As stated earlier, the two texts are similar because they have gender represantations
where the man is taking control and is ignoring the womans concern but there is also parts in the
two pieces when they are different like when Maui is suggesting he is not sexist, and when the
brother and husband are being sexist by not letting the woman make decisions. Both pieces have
different representations of Genders, in which some are similar and some are different.
