Jeremiah Dyson, 5th Block Tim McGraw Why I Chose This Artist… I chose Tim McGraw as my artist because he is a more familiar country artist to me and I thought it would be fun to research him for this presentation. Childhood McGraw was born in Delhi, Louisiana on May 1, 1967 to his mother, Elizabeth Ann, and his father, Frank Edwin McGraw Jr., who was a popular baseball pitcher. Tim had a step father, Horace Smith, and thought that he was his real dad, until he found a certificate and confronted his mother about it. As a kid, Tim enjoyed playing baseball and played it while in high school. Education McGraw went to school at Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship. One day, he injured himself and threw away his dream to be a baseball player like his dad. Since then, he started to play more music and even learned how to play the guitar. Then, his mother decided to move to Florida. He decided to go with her and attended Florida Community College at Jackson. In 1989, one of McGraw’s heroes, Keith Whitley, died and he decided to drop out of college on that day to honor him. He moved to Nashville to start his music career. On the right is a picture of Keith Whitley. Music Start After McGraw moved to Nashville, he managed to get gigs in clubs and within a year and a half later, he got a contract with Curb Records. He released his first selftitled album but people didn’t really know it existed. As a result, the label sent him on the road with his band (the Dance Hall Doctors) to gain some notice. His live act went over big. In 1994, he released the single “Indian Outlaw” and it was a huge hit. Unfortunately, he also received a lot of backlash because people took it as offensive. He apologized but some radio stations started to refuse to play it.
