FIELD STUDY 2 Learning Episode 1: The Teacher We Remember ANALYZE 1. From the PPSTs, the South East Asia Teachers competency standards and the TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess? There are numerous characteristics that a great teacher must possess; this should not be confined to how we recognize teachers as teachers. According to the PPST, a great teacher must have grown or acquired the necessary professional growth and development of a teacher as demonstrated in the four career stages. It demonstrates that in order to be competent, a teacher must possess a precise standard in each step that can be acquired on the range of being a teacher. The Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Framework demonstrates teachers' practical interaction with their pupils, with the main goal of producing a happy learner who enjoys learning while reaching the necessary learning goals. This focuses on how a teacher applies his or her knowledge to his or her students. Another thing I was impressed by in the TEDx video I watched was how the speakers demonstrated what makes a great teacher and how it can affect the lives of students. It implies that being a great teacher entails more than simply being a teacher; you can also be a friend, a second parent, or the person who influences their lives in order for them to see their worth and purpose. 2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies? These competencies aren't just limited to professional ones; for the most part, it's about being a good teacher who knows how to apply teaching in the appropriate way. It's not just about getting professional degrees or training; it's also about how a teacher can make a difference in the lives of students on a daily basis. The TEDx videos on how to be a teacher when you're in front of your students and how a teacher can change a student's life simply by listening to them moved me. As a result, being a teacher is not restricted to possessing a teaching degree and professional qualifications, because teaching is a lifelong learning experience, and competence will always be determined by how good a teacher you are with your pupils. 3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute and report grades? Explain your answer. A teacher's greatness is not determined by how successfully he or she can prepare and execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, or compute and report grades. These are just indicators that a teacher is carrying out his or her duties in accordance with his or her job description. The outputs of a teacher which are his/her students, are used to determine his or her excellence. We can state that a teacher is exceptional if his or her students get considerable learning from them. Students have an excellent instructor if they can apply what they've learned in class to real-life problems. If a teacher inspires students to pursue their aspirations and set greater goals, then the instructor is exceptional. A great teacher is one who can make a difference in the lives of his or her students. 3. For a teacher to be great, which is more important- personal qualities or professional competencies? As what I have learned and experience from my previous teachers, it is the personal qualities that the teacher has which makes them great. Every teacher can be professional competent but nor great. Being a great teacher is having the personal qualities that would get a teacher to his/her utmost teaching journey. These personal qualities may include skills in communication, listening, collaboration, adaptability, empathy and patience. Other characteristics of effective teaching include an engaging classroom presence, value in realworld learning, exchange of best practices and a lifelong love of learning. Most of all, a great teacher would change the world the touch the lives of his/her students. 5. Who are the teachers that we remember most? For me, the great teacher that I ever had was Sir Asher Pasco. He was a great teacher for many aspects, he is versatile and know what he should do being a great teacher. I was not just amazed by his intelligence but also how he touched our lives every time he spoke in front of the class. I was inspired by him to do better this college and to do well when I become a teacher. I think that is why I look at him as a great teacher, because he does not only give as knowledge and learnings but also wisdom that I may bring when the time comes that it is my turn to touch lives of my students. REFLECT 1. Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need to improve in? As I have learned throughout this learning episode, a teacher must be remembered not only for the lessons that he or she teaches, but also for the fact that he or she is effective not only in the lessons that he or she teaches, but also in the lessons that he or she can apply to real-life situations. I believe that, as a soon-to-be teacher, I am dedicated, passionate, and open to lifelong learning, among other qualities. I can motivate kids to do more than just learn; I can motivate them to make a difference in the world in which they live. I believe that, despite the fact that I already possess characteristics that are crucial for a future teacher, I still lack certain characteristics that would make me a more successful teacher, such as being lazy and procrastinating. However, I feel that it is a process, and as someone who is constantly open to new learning, I believe that I will be able to achieve and develop in this area. 2. Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating? I believe it is adaptability and the ability to motivate students. These two examples are only a few of the personal characteristics that I possess, but I believe that they are crucial and must be proved before anything else can be considered. First and foremost, being able to adjust to different situations is extremely important as a teacher. A teacher would come into contact with a variety of students, parents, co-teachers, principals, and other people who are involved in the school-community collaboration. I believe I am already capable of adapting well to any event or environment that I will encounter because I have received training in this area, which is a critical attribute to possess in the twenty-first century. Second, I believe I am capable of encouraging my students by demonstrating right activities, conversing with them, and listening to their concerns and suggestions. As a result, I will be able to establish a bond with my students, resulting in a gratifying experience for both of us during the course of the learning process. 3. In which competencies do I need to develop? I think I should develop myself more on the personal competencies and I should possess it with all my heart as a future educator. I believe that everyone can be professional in teaching but possessing personal competencies that would touch the lives and change the world of your learners is what would make a difference. I think developing more my personal competencies and apply it to my future teaching journey will make me an effective teacher. I was inspired by the TEDx videos that I watched, as it says there what makes a great teacher, and I wanted to be one. With that reason, developing my personal competencies would draw me nearer and set me to that path. WRITE ACTION RESEARCH PROMPTS 1. During my elementary to college days, I observed that personal traits such as giving importance to openness to opinions or ideas and professional competencies like communication and collaborative skills were least/not displayed and as a result, students were/class was unable to express their own thoughts, opinions or ideas in a proper manner without putting their emotions to it or cannot accept criticisms for them to grow and mature. 2. The lack of these personal traits and personal competencies (mentioned in #1) may be caused by the fact that most teacher are still using the authoritative approach of teaching or teacher-centered approach which limits the students’ communication and collaboration with their classmates. 3. I would like to address this problem (mentioned in #2) by conducting an action research on using the learner-centered approach and see how it will affect the students’ communication and collaborative skills. 4. a. The main objective of my action research is to know the value of learner centered approach in the teaching and learning process. b. My specific research question are: ➢ How effective is learner-centered approach to the teaching and learning process? ➢ How does learner-centered approach will develop the communication and collaborative skills of the students? ➢ What appropriate activities, tasks and performances can be given to students for the development of their communication and collaborative skills? c. To answer my specific research questions, I learner-centered approach as a method for the teaching and learning process. This action research will used observations on the change of learning and teaching approach and will determine its effectivity. CHECK FOR MASTERY WORK ON MY ARTIFACTS A GREAT TEACHER IS THE TEACHER WE REMEMBER When I was a young, my teachers were the ones I looked up to as the ones who knew everything. When I was in elementary school, I had a teacher who was really intelligent and had a great understanding of how to interact with her students. She is more than just a teacher to me; she is more like a mother to me as well. We are all quite attached to her, as if we were her own children, despite the fact that we always consider our teacher to be the second parent. I gained a great deal from this learning experience, which I believe will be very beneficial to me in my future role as a teacher. Aside from all of the knowledge I've received about the PPSTs career phases, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Framework, and the TEDx films I've viewed, I've come to certain realizations about myself. It is absolutely true that the professors who leave the most lasting impression on us are those who have touched not just our heads but also our emotions and souls. Those instructors made a difference in our lives, whether it was a minor or significant shift. I discovered that being a teacher is more than just a profession; it is a lifetime passion that I will continue to pursue. There is more to do than merely educate when we join the teaching profession, since we will instill values in the minds of our pupils that will lead them along the correct road on their life's journey. Given that learning is a lifelong journey for all of us, it would make a difference if we were to give our ears to our pupils rather than being the ones who just speak. I learnt that if we teach them things that they would enjoy and carry with them for the rest of their lives, we can be an excellent teacher. After all, I am just at the beginning of my career as an educator, and I hope that one day I will be the teacher that my pupils will remember for the rest of their lives because I affected their minds, hearts, and souls.
