Science Unit 3. Earth Interactive Systems STEM Module Project: Design an Eco-Column 5th Grade-Ms. Jennifer Torres 3rd Period Project What are we going to learn? -Students will complete the science challenge to build an eco-column. -Students will use what they’ve learned throughout the module to design an eco-column. -Students will experiment with the process of making an eco-column which will show the transfer of energy because energy from the Sun will go to the plants. -Use the checklist below to evaluate your project. ● ● ● ● ● 1-Research ideas for materials that you could use in your eco-column and bring the materials to school (three two-liter bottles, soil, seeds, small plants, dead plant material, decomposers, fish, water, and gravel). 2-Sketch your model: Draw a diagram of the eco-column(include length, width, and height). 3-Construct the eco-column in class(groups of 3-4). Support the evidence by writing and filling out the guide. The project will be evaluated on the following way: NOTE: Students will investigate, prepare and make the project in science class. Science indicators 5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and Earth. [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include molecular explanations. LS2.A: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems. LS2.B: Cycles of Matter and Energy Transfer in Ecosystems. ELA/Literacy Connections: RI.5.7, SL.5.5 POINTS 5 RESULT Oral presentation 3 Creativity, use of resources 1 Work on time TOTAL 1 10
