Visual Literacy Terms Context: the circumstances or situation of the photo Symbols: something that represents something else Compare: Look for similarities Contrast: look for differences Foreground: the front of the photo Background: the rear/back of the photo Visual Artist: person who created the photo Lighting & Color: affect how we see the photo Composition: arrangement of objects, people & places in the photo Perspective/distance: dies the viewer feel close to or far away from the visual? Point of View: how you are looking at the visual? (angled down, angled up, level photo) Juxtaposition: the arrangement of objects side by side to emphasize similarities and/or differences Mood: an overall feeling from the photo and the arrangement of details. Could include sad, happy, fear, despair, anger, serenity, excitement, etc.
