SBT Open Observation Form Focus for the observation 24/01/2022 RE – what makes a community? Observation notes The children learnt about what the parish community – i.e., the parish community supports its members at the Sunday Eucharist etc. The children learnt what happens at a funeral in the parish community – community are reminded of the gift of eternal life. The teacher was explaining what happens at a funeral to the children, he was patient in explaining each step while answering any questions the children have. The lesson was interactive, showing photos and videos of some of the features of a funeral. What I have learned from the observation and how I will implement it in my teaching Make religious studies lessons interactive so children stay engaged Allow time for children to ask questions Ensure that pupils are clear about the difference between fact, opinion and belief Further questions Sensitivity issues? Understanding some children may find talking/learning about funerals can be triggering. provide appropriate support after a session for any pupil who may be troubled by an issue raised either by the class teacher or members of the well-being team. Impact on my teaching In this section note the impact on your teaching. Teaching RE is not as straightforward as other core subjects such as maths, science and English. There are many sensitive aspects to consider in order not to offend or trigger any students. I will ensure pupils establish ground rules about how they will behave towards each other and how sensitive issues will be dealt with.
