Page 7 of 8 ACTING BASICS THROUGH SELF-AWARENESS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP Theatre for Development PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSITION Clarity. The idea needs to be clear. (i.e., what is the problem or specific issue). Focus and Subordination. A specific image (the oppressed) is emphasized to draw the viewer’s attention to a particular idea (problem). It is necessary then those other elements do not compete for attention with the focal point. Movement and Dynamism. Dynamism refers to the excitement created by the interaction of elements. The tension or the push and pull of forces provides movement, this contributes to the dynamic relationship of each individual as well as their blocking, levels, physical relationship. QUALITIES OF A GOOD PERFORMANCE Sensitivity and teamwork (ensemble acting). One does not work alone in theater. They all work as a team. And for the team to get to where they want to go, members need to be sensitive to each other. Sincerity and conviction. The actor must be convinced of his/her role and sincere in its portrayal. S/he has delved deep into knowing the character s/he is portraying, in relation to other characters. Precision and mastery. Precision in a performance refers to right timing, or the characteristic rhythm of the play; to the contribution of each member of the team to achieve this end. Mastery is achieved when everyone does the work well. Relaxation. The actor must know how to relax. His performance should appear effortless, as he delivers his lines or as his character unfolds.
