The novel is set in mid-June in 1943and is in an unnamed city. Max’s father’s occupation is that of a watchmaker. On Max’s thirteenth birthday his parents inform the family that they will be moving to live on the coast. The words “gulped” and “protest” tell the reader that Max and his siblings were nervous / uncertain about the move and wanted to challenge the decision. The family are moving out of the city to escape the dangers of the war. The family are moving to a “small town on the coast”. Max’s father gives him a watch for his birthday. The engraving on the back of the watch said, “Max’s time machine”. The image is effective in telling the reader how Max is feeling because just as the speed and chaos that would occur if a train was to burst through a china shop, so do are Max’s feelings rushing through his body at an overwhelming pace. “A shadow of sadness fell across his father’s eyes”- this suggests that Max’s father was not being completely honest about his feelings. Time is personified when the writer states “the hours crept by slowly”. We know that Max’s father also had a sleepless night as Max found him “sitting in an armchair, fully dressed, reading a book by the light of an oil lamp.” This implies that he did not go to bed and was up all night reading. Max wishes his father’s invention could read really stop time as that would mean he wouldn’t have to move home. Copernicus was a man who “discovered that the earth turns around the sun, not the other way round.” Max has two sisters. Alicia is fifteen years old and Irina is eight years old. The word ethereal means something is extremely delicate and beautiful. The writer has used alliteration. “…their roofs peeping timidly over the surrounding trees”.
