Introduction
/ou/ Spelled ou and ow
▶▶ Write for display: count, sour, south. Instruct a volunteer
to read the words and identify the vowel sound in each
word.
How is the /ou/ sound spelled in these words? ou
▶▶ Direct a student to circle the vowel sound.
Does /ou/ come in the middle of these words or at the
end? in the middle The /ou/ sound can be spelled ou
before a consonant or a consonant digraph.

How is /ou/ spelled in house? ou Do you hear e at the

▶▶ Write show•er and tow•el for display. Ask a student to
read the words aloud.
How is the /ou/ sound spelled in these words? ow The
/ou/ sound can be spelled ow at the end of a word or
syllable. In these words, the ow comes at the end of a
syllable.

▶▶ Display the instruction manual. Discuss what might
happen if words in an instruction manual were misspelled (e.g., unclear how to use the appliance correctly;
safety issues; someone could get hurt without proper
directions).
▶▶ Display the cookbook. Discuss what might happen if
a recipe had misspellings (e.g., unsure of ingredients,
measurements, or order of mixing).
Misspelled words send a confusing message. People
might make mistakes because the meaning of the words
is not clear.

▶▶ Direct a student to circle the spelling for /ou/ in each word.
▶▶ Write for display: about, aloud, amount.
▶▶ Clap the syllables as you read the words together. Ask the students how
many syllables they heard in each word.
▶▶ Circle the a in each word. Explain that the letter a at the beginning of
each word does not have a long a or short a sound. The a says /uh/.
This soft /uh/ sound is called the schwa sound. Any vowel can say the
schwa sound. Here the schwa is spelled with an a.
▶▶ Circle the /ou/ pattern in each word and discuss the spellings.
Homophones
▶▶ Display the Homophones activity for aloud and allowed, revealing only
the illustrations at the top. Elicit that these words are homophones. They
are pronounced the same, but they have different meanings and spellings.
▶▶ Use the illustrations to remind the students of the meaning of each word.
▶▶ Discuss the illustration for the sentence. Guide the students as they complete the missing homophones in the sentence.
▶▶ Follow the same procedure using the visual for flour and flower.

Word Sort
▶▶ Draw attention to the Pattern Words on page 66. Pronounce each word
distinctly and instruct the students to read each word after you.
▶▶ Display the picture of a sunflower.
The sunflower is not one flower but a cluster of more than 2,000 tiny
flowers growing together. A sunflower’s head can grow to as big as two
feet across, and the plant itself can be as tall as eighteen feet. Sunflower
seeds are used in cooking, salads, and granola snacks.
▶▶ Display Word Sort List 17. Point out the Word Sort activity. Remind
the students to look for the spelling of /ou/ to determine where to
place each word.
▶▶ Choose a student to read the first word on the list.

Alphabetical Order
To put a group of words in alphabetical order, look at the first letter
of each word. If the first letters of the words are the same, look at
the second letters.
