What else can we discuss when exploring these characters? Roald Dahl (the narrator) mischievous and intelligent Mrs Pratchett miserable and unhygienic Thwaites (and the boys) Second in command and childish ”Evaluate how the writer has created these impressions” You can write about any method the writer as used, if you feel that method has created the impression you are writing about. ”Evaluate how the writer has created these impressions” For example: I agree with the statement as the writer cleverly contrasts the happiness that the sweet shop brings the children with the person who owns it; through describing the sweet shop as being at “the very centre of [their] lives”, yet describing “the woman” as a “horror”. The specific placement of the sweet shop in relation to the children’s lives implies that it holds a position of appreciation and value however, the intentional vague labelling of the owner as, “the woman”, conveys to the reader that, she is held in an opposite regard. Therefore, a sense of mystery and fear is established, enabling the readers to be rather intrigued by this character. The contrast of having such a joyful place, as the writer has used a simile to label it as being what a “bar is to a drunk” to the children, and having the owner being regarded as a “terrible drawback” ultimately creates an interesting impression regarding the relationship between these characters.
