The Hurricane

It was a cloudy and grey day. There was no school that day and the city was like a ghost town a few
hours before hurricane struck my city. I will never forget that day and how it felt to be in a living
nightmare. Three days before the hurricane, the schools were closed. I never saw people preparing
for such a thing, it looked like a horror movie to me. I remember the markets and supermarkets
were closed and most of them were almost empty, they particularly ran out of the food and water.
Just before getting the supplies for two weeks and taping down our windows, we helplessly waited
for the hurricane to strike. Around 9 pm, the hurricane got to the city and that's when the gusts of
wind began to slam the doors, windows and trees. There was heavy rain which caused our balcony
to start flooding. My brother and I couldn’t stand the noise of the gusts along with the heavy rain
and thunders, so we tried to sleep.
The next day, when I woke up, the first thing I did was to go and see my family. I checked up on them
to see if they were all okay and if there was anything broken in the house or outside the house. To
my surprise, a tree had fallen on the fence of my house. Fortunately, the fence was strong enough to
resist the weight of the tree and didn’t collapse. Afterwards, we went to the front yard and had a
look at the street. When we checked our cars in the front yard and saw one of them had the
windows opened, we immediately imagined the worst. When we got close enough to the car, we
saw it was flooded. We quickly opened the car doors so that the water could flood out.
Finally, we decided to take a drive around the city to scale the overall damage. On our way to a
market we saw that the streets were full of branches, trash and even parts from broken cars! There
was one boulevard that had 4 to 5 electric poles which fell in the middle of the way so we needed to
go very slowly otherwise our car could be electrocuted. I will never forget how most of the stores
were destroyed as the bordering walls were made of glass for display purposes. Some
neighbourhoods were severely damaged and were devoid of electricity and water for almost 2
months. Luckily, my house had electricity for the next 2 days and water for 1 week. For me, this
experience was unforgettable and it still seems like a nightmare.
