CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
An examination of the core concepts of financial accounting, which includes the determination of
income and the recognition, measurement and reporting of assets, liabilities, and owners’ equity.
Different methods of the utilization of accounting information for business planning and management

problem solving will be explored. Core concepts of financial and managerial accounting such as financial
statement analysis, tax considerations, cost-volume-profit analysis, budgeting, cost allocation, job order
and process costing will be covered. The impact of ethical, regulatory, and environmental aspects on the
interpretation and application of accounting information will be considered.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course provides students with an introduction to the core concepts of financial and managerial
accounting. The first part of the course will concentrate on financial reporting to users external to the
organization. Issues of income determination and asset recognition and valuation will be considered.
The emphasis will be placed on the study of accounting transactions and events in the context of
International Financial Reporting Standards. The impact of ethical, regulatory, and environmental
aspects on the interpretation and application of accounting information will be considered. The second
part of the course will consider the users of financial information inside the organization, i.e. managers,
and examine different methods and techniques for business planning and management problem solving
including product costing-job and process operations, cost-volume-profit analysis, relevant costs and
benefits for decision-making and operational budgeting decisions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The main aim of the course is to provide students with a robust understanding of the conceptual issues in
accounting and how these are reflected in accounting standards. At the end of the course students should
be able to:





Explain the main financial and management accounting methods, techniques and principles.
Describe and apply a conceptual framework for financial reporting.
Identify the conditions and environments leading to various forms of national financial accounting
and reporting
Explain the international regulatory framework for financial reporting and apply the provisions to
general examples
Apply the requirements of International Accounting Standards to certain economic events and
transactions undertaken by organizations.

EXAM/ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS:
Practice Questions
Practice questions have been assigned for each module. These practice questions can be found in the
textbook at the end of each module. Although the practice questions are not graded, I strongly
encourage you to attempt each practice question as these questions are reflective of the types of
questions you will see on the midterm exam and final exam. Further, each Friday 6:30pm to 8:30pm
E.S.T. the course teaching assistant Blerina Hoxha will be holding live tutorials. During these live
tutorials, Blerina will be available to help you with all practice questions, and any other questions you
have with respect to course content. These weekly tutorials will be held on Blackboard through the
virtual classroom tab. These tutorials are NOT mandatory. They are made available to you should you
decide to you require extra assistance with respect to these practice questions.
Assignments

There are two assignments. Assignment #1 covers topics in financial accounting and assignment #2
covers topics in managerial accounting. The assignments will be provided to you within the first few
weeks of classes. These assignments are to be submitted no later than 11 p.m. E.S.T. on the respective

MIDTERM EXAM
The midterm examination comprises problem solving and decision-making questions relating to various
financial reporting issues. Estimated length is 2 hours and will be on-line. Further details with respect
exact time to be announced.

Final Examination
The final exam comprises questions on managerial accounting issues. It will be available online with the
final date and time to be determined. The estimated length of the final exam is 2 hours.

During the final week of the course you may also be invited to participate in further research about the
course. If you decide to participate you may be asked to fill out anonymous online questionnaires that
solicit your impressions about the course design and student learning in the course. The survey
participation is voluntary and no questions of a personal nature will be asked. Your participation will
have no effect on your grade and your instructor will not know who participated in the surveys.

Finally, at the end of the survey you may also be asked if you want to participate in a focus group or
interviews after final grades have been assigned to gather yours and other student opinions about
specific course delivery methods and technologies used.
