Layer One
Introduction
Guided oral reading practice helps students achieve fluency in reading connected text. Use controlled
reading material to practice specific skills and help students become confident readers. Stories
may be used with any skill-based reading instruction and are correlated to the Layer One lessons
in Phonics First®.They are structured to contain only the skills and the sight words taught up to the
designated lesson in the Phonics First®program. The Phonics First®lesson number is indicated to the
right of each story title below.
Copying Stories
Permission is given for an individual teacher to copy stories for each student in one classroom
or for one resource teacher to copy for student case-load each year. Permission is not given for
reproduction for additional classrooms.

The Fox by the Shed
Ken is a lad. He is six. Max is his chum. Max
is ten. Max led Ken to the shed to get an ax
for Ken'sdad. The ax was in the shed. By
the shed was a red fox ... a BIG red fox!
"Dad! Dad! Comeon, Dad." But Dad did not
come. Ken'sdad did not come to the shed.
"Rex! Come!Come,Rex, come!" Rex was
a dog. He was Max's big tan dog. '\Rex! Rex,
come!"
Rex did come. He ran to the shed to see
Max and Ken ... and the big red fox. Rex
did come and the fox did go. The fox ran
and ran.
Ken and Max ran to Ken'sdad. "Max and I
saw a fox by the shed. Rex did come and
the fox ran!" Dad got the dog mix from
the bin and fed it to Rex.
