There are a number of misconceptions
surrounding metacognition and the
related construct 'self-regulated
learning'. 1. Metacognition is simply
'thinking about thinking' Although
metacognition does involve thinking about one's thinking, it is more
complex than that. A large part of metacognition is actively
monitoring one's own learning and making changes to one's own
learning behaviours and strategies based on this monitoring.

The Toolbox organizes the Thinking
Routines into categories that describe
the types of thinking the routines help to
facilitate. Some routines appear in more
than one category, and some routines have different versions that
offer modifications for specific age groups or more specific
conceptual challenges.

Amplify Reflection
Amplify Reflection | Silvia TolisanoLangwitches Blog
Reflection is an important component of
the learning process. It can NOT be seen
as an add-on, something to be cut if time
is running short. We have all heard John
Dewey's quote: "We don't learn from experience, we learn from
reflecting on the experience" Reflection also takes on an important
role in documenting learning, blogging as pedagogy and formative
assessment.

Study Strategies Beyond
Memorization
Using a metacognitive exercise helps
students know what they should and
shouldn't study. Metacognition, or
thinking about how one thinks, is a
useful skill for improving comprehension and learning. It can be
especially useful for review in advance of an assessment.

Metacognition: Nurturing SelfAwareness in the Classroom
How do children gain a deeper
understanding of how they think, feel,
and act so that they can improve their
learning and develop meaningful
relationships? Since antiquity, philosophers have been intrigued with
how human beings develop self-awareness -- the ability to examine
and understand who we are relative to the world around us.

How Metacognition Boosts Learning
Patricia Chen, a postdoctoral researcher
at Stanford and the lead author of the
study, says she often had students
coming to her lamenting their poor test
scores. "Many students have come to
me after their exams trying to understand why they did not do as well
as they had expected, despite their hard work," she recalls.

Easy Ways to Build Metacognitive
Skills
Hope you find this useful!
Many teachers have designed an
engaging project or lesson only to be
faced with the initial questions "Why are
we doing this?" and "Is this going to be
on the test?" Helping students develop metacognitive skills is critical
for learning.
