Why would it sell?
The movie idea would sell for three reasons. First of all, the idea captures two human natures:
fear and curiosity. Resource exhaustion, overpopulation, continuous conflict between countries
will be shown at the beginning. This brings audience fear and calls their attention right away.
Another scene will be a few summit leaders and scientific researchers finding higher creatures
in another galaxy. People will be curious about how this research is going to affect us and how
human beings is going to survive. Secondly, the movie idea is expandable which means it can
be made into a series. The end of the first movie or Part 1 can be left with some unsolved
problems. This leaves some imagination for the audience, and they would want to watch the
second part. Another reason why it would sell is that science fiction is a hot theme. According to
the market statistics, Science fiction movies have consistently accounted for at least above 15%
of the box office market share, having a 25% market share in 2015. Futuristic and apocalyptic
themes have been portrayed successfully in movies like The Martian and Divergent Series. In
recent years, more cinemas are equipped with IMAX technology, which accelerates a
continuous growth for Sci-fi movies.
Target Audience
Moving on to target audience. The main audience of the movie can be categorized into three
groups: people who aged between 18 to 45, teenagers and Sci-Fi fans. It is actually would not
be surprising to see that there is big gap in age groups. A well-known movie The Martian has a
59 percent of audience who aged above 35. Since our movie is very similar to The Martian, we
would expect more older adult audience to watch. Another interesting fact is that two thirds of
people who followed The Martian on Facebook are teenagers. So teenagers can account for a
huge number of box office of our movie. Not to mention Sci-fi fans, they would definitely go to
watch our movie just by hearing the name and watching our trailer.
Who are potential buyers?
So who can be the potential buyers? Big movie distribution companies like Universal and 20th
Century Fox will be our top choices. The reason why these two companies are chosen is
because they all have rich experience of distributing Sci-Fi movies. Two of the most well-known
Sci-fi movies distributed by the companies will be Avatar and Jurassic World. Not only these two
movies are by far the top box office movies, but they help these two distribution companies to
gain a good reputation. There is an interesting point that when people think of watching a Sci-Fi
movie, they are also likely to consider the distribution company. Since these two companies are
famous with Sci-fi movies, they would love to accept and take our movie idea as well as the
content.
