II. Background Information for Learners
Participatory action, in relation to the definition in research, is an approach that
uses different means to address issues identified by a community. It allows for new
ways of working, interacting and knowing for the improvement of a community’s
practice.
Five Characteristics of Participatory Action
1. Participatory- the community maintains control over the process of dealing with issues.
2. Define by a Need for Action- the community initiates the project that will address the
issues and this action is guided by a goal.
3. Useful and Meaningful- the members of the community are provided with the opportunity
to analyze the situations and develop solutions.
4. Reflexive- the members reflect on the activities executed regularly, and determine the
benefits and purposes of the projects.
5. Flexible and Interactive- throughout the process, action plans may be modified
depending on the needs of the community.

In this activity sheet, you will be able to plan and make your own participatory
action that would help your community solve the issues and concerns you are dealing.

Exercise 2
Directions: List down 3 issues that your community is facing right now. Using the given
frame work in activity number 2. Create your own participatory plan of action.
Invite local teenagers that is interested of volunteering for the
work.
Brain storm about the possible solutions and how effective they may be. Find
a better alternative than just picking up trash.
The ideas are:
 Put a trash can around the area where it can easily be accessed.
 Visit the shores every Friday to pick up trash
 Put up signs to remind the people to not throw trash around the
area.
Dividing the group of teenagers into three; conducting an experiment on what
is the most effective suggestion. And this will go on for two weeks this way
we will be able to know which is the most effective if we are dealing with trash
or garbage.
After gathering enough information about the possible solution to the problem;
practice the solution that is chosen. At the end of the day conducting reflection
and praising the efforts that is given and knowing that we are able to be of
help b.

The importance is the community becomes one in one goal on which they try to
reach. This is an action that gives back to the people that surrounds you as well
as a way of reaching out and making a connection.
As a student, how does participatory action helps your community? Cite an example
Participatory action helps my community in making sure that the surroundings are
clean. There is a time that when dengue is spreading and is very harmful to the
children and so they decided to ask the members of the community to help clean the
areas which they think is prone to mosquitoes, they would sometime clean each
other’s backyards for the safety of everyone.

I have learned that there is a big benefit to the community if there is participatory action.
I realized that the there are things that we could do in order to live a life in the community
as healthy as we can and create a bond that will be remembered.
I will apply this to my life as much as I can for this will help think and organize the things that
is hard to solve.
