FIELD STUDY 2 LEARNING EPISODE FS 2 1 The Teacher We Remember Analyze 1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the TEDx videos that you viewed; what competencies does a great teacher possess? Based on the four career stages of teachers of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers(PPSTs), great teachers never stop learning. After gaining the qualification on becoming professional beginning teacher, the next step is becoming proficient to a highly proficient one. Whereas, based on the frameworks given by the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards, great teacher knows and understands what to teach, helping students learn, engaging to the community, and becoming a better teacher every day. Engaging themselves to teaching profession means engaging to the a wider role that goes beyond the classroom. Based on the video that I viewed, great teachers has deep understanding to their students. Indeed they are a listener which is a skill needed to transform schools and education. Additionally, great teachers has a power to bring out the best version of their students. They have this deep understanding and they can see beyond despite of the struggles that their students are facing. They lead every students in the way where they can see their value, destiny and purpose that can have full impact to their future choices. 2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies? No, the competencies I mentioned above do not focus solely to professional competencies. Personal qualities are also needed to be possessed by every teacher in order to achieve success in teaching and learning. Imparting precise knowledge to students is very essential because they rely on what the teachers are teaching them. On the other hand, personal qualities of a teacher means a lot for a better relationship within the classroom and a wider community where a teacher belongs. In a classroom with diverse backgrounds and skill levels, it’s very important that a teacher strives to understand each of their students to the best of their abilities and support them along in their journey. 3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute, and report grades? Explain your answer. In my own opinion, professional competencies are not enough for a teacher to be called great. Planning a lesson, executing a lesson plan, managing a class, assessing learning, computing and reporting grades are part of a teacher’s job and by doing this task only means he was doing his job. A great teacher must also possess personal qualities such as being a good listener which is very important characteristic because a teacher will only be able to support and encourage their students to advance if they have a strong understanding of who they are and where they are in their academic journey. It is important to listen for what students are interested in so the teacher can tailor lessons to their interest areas, how they describe any challenges or obstacles so the teacher can be supportive, and how they interact with other students and in the classroom. Listening can also be important to understand cultural differences and this is just one example of a personal quality that is essential to understand one’s students and to support them in their academic journey. 4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important - personal qualities or professional competencies? They are of equal importance. A knowledgeable teacher who can’t communicate is worthless. A good communicator who is ignorant of the subject matter is likewise worthless. The professional and personal qualities are equally essential for a teacher. In my opinion, a teacher is will not be called great without either one of them. Personal qualities including good communication and interpersonal skills are required so that teacher can understand the needs of the students and they can also freely approach the teacher. Professional qualities are necessary to learn the basics of methods of teaching, techniques and hands on training to handle all kinds of students from all the sections of the society. And also to give certification for teaching. In addition to this, a teacher must have a reliable knowledge of their subjects and keep it updated for an effective teaching and learning. 5. Who are the teachers that we remember most? Actually, most us don’t remember being taught, rather we remember being transformed. We remember the teachers that facilitated our growth and transformation over the years, not a single lesson in a classroom and this aspect was mentioned in the TEDx video that I viewed. Although teachers all have different teaching styles, passions, and life experiences, memorable teachers have one thing in common, they are intentional about the impact they want to create. These teachers have a long-term vision and don’t get caught up in the small day-to-day stuff. They accept their students for who they are, and help them see their purpose of who they could become when they leave school. Reflect Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement in? The personal traits I possess was being patient and approachable. They say that ‘patience is a virtue’, and this couldn’t be more true for teachers. Dealing with youngsters can be a tricky task so being approachable is a must. I am also enthusiastic and adaptable I love to be a teacher and everything about it. Feeling a sense of enthusiasm from their teacher will inspire them to learn and apply themselves better. I am also a good listener, emphatic, and disciplined. As a person, I know that there are personal traits that I need to improve such as strong communication skills. Possessing this quality is necessary when speaking to parents about their children. Or sometimes a child might be misbehaving, and news of this must be broken to the parents. Another trait was my patience, I knew that this trait is very crucial in the teaching profession especially to the students who will truly test may patience and I was afraid that I can’t hold back my anger. Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating? I am capable of creating a safe learning environment that is conducive to learning is essential. I knew that I can also be good at lesson plan design. I have the knowledge on how to choose and create instructional materials to accommodate students at different levels. This follows my knowledge of using varied teaching strategies to help my students with multiple learning styles learn and stay engaged. I know that I can also be able to assess and identify my students’ needs. I can also collaborate with others so we can learn from one another and grow into better teachers to make the school a safe, effective learning environment for all students and to improve the overall image of the school and the instruction that takes place there. In which competencies do I need to develop more? My technical and digital skills are the competencies that I need to develop more because as we know due to modernization one must be settle with the knowledge we had to provide a better instruction for the learners. Children of today have been surrounded by digital technology and this skills as well are essential in this time of pandemic. I should undergo an extensive digital transformation to be able to meet the needs of the young generation and their digitalized future. The COVID-19 pandemic has suddenly and abruptly forced schools and education indeed to engage in such a transformation that’s why I need to enhance my knowledge and skills in this competencies. Who are the teachers that we remember most? We don’t forget teachers who will make you realize that good things take time, so work hard for it. Teachers who will make you realize that life is tough, will be tough, and will always be tough, so we need to be tougher! Someone who will taught you that a beautiful face is not enough so you also need a beautiful mind. A teacher that will never leave hopeless and weak students behind, even if other teachers think that some students are too stupid to learn anything. They keep on saying that grades don’t measure your intelligence and that the real battle starts when you graduate. They are inspirational, cool and witty without even trying. They will remind you that it is okay to fail as long as you’re willing to get up again. A teacher who will make an impact to his/her students to always pursue his dreams and know his purpose as an individual. Write an Action Prompts 1. OBSERVE In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such as enthusiasm, sense of humor, personal touch; and professional competencies like creativeness and technical skills were least/ not displayed and as a result, students were not that engaged in class, eye contact with students were limited, a quick lesson pace was made but there is no encouragement to students in approaching with the topics or problems they have on mind. Satisfaction and motivation are less because the teacher lacks creativity. Collaboration and curiosity driven by an engaging content was also limited because less activities and learning materials was displayed. 2. REFLECT The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies (mentioned in #1) may be caused by some problems they are facing and the lack of resources and support. Technology is a major factor influencing education today. Schools are expected to use it to enhance the education of their students. The issues I have identified as the main barriers to its successful use are factors related to equipment, resources and training that are external to teachers and internal factors such as attitudes and beliefs, confidence and skills. 3. PLAN I would like to address this problem (mentioned in #2) by conducting an action research on different factors that influence technology integration in educational context. 4. ACT a) The main objective of my action research is to outline current thinking on the role of technology in education. b) My specific research questions are: 1. What are the variety of external factors that influence the use of technology in an educational environment? 2. What are the benefits and risks of technology in education? 3. What are the risks of educational technology? c) To answer my specific research questions, I will gather data through survey, review of literature and analysis. Work on my Artifacts Attach your reflections here. As future teacher, we need to be reminded of the personal qualities and professional competencies we ought to possess. Being a great teacher doesn’t rely solely on the knowledge and skills the teacher has because his traits and characteristics also play an important role in striving to be one. In recent years, the quality of education has significantly changed. Teachers must provide students with skills that will help them work collaboratively and sensitively in a team, become decision-makers, plan and manage their time effectively, listen to one another and choose the right communication strategy at the right time. We need great teachers consisting of one or more skills whose mastery would enable the attainment of the competency. He or she must be linked to all three of the domains under which performance can be assessed: knowledge, skills and attitude. Since competencies are observable, they are also measurable. It is possible to assess a competency from a teacher’s performance. Teaching competencies may require equal amounts of knowledge, skill and attitude, but some will not. Some competencies may involve more knowledge than skill or attitude, whereas, some competencies may be more skill or performance based. Teachers need a wide range of competencies in order to face the complex challenges of today’s world. The central figures in the educational process are teachers. The success of training and education depends on their preparation and performance quality. Ideally, then, educators should demonstrate effective classroom management, maximizing efficiency, maintaining discipline and morale, promoting teamwork, planning, communicating, focusing on results, evaluating progress, and making constant adjustments. A range of strategies should be employed to promote positive relationships, cooperation, and purposeful learning. Organizing, assigning, and managing time, space and activities should ensure the active and equitable engagement of students in productive tasks. Great teachers are remembered. They are the kind of teachers that will leave an imprint of himself or himself on his/her students. They possess good qualities that will empower students to reach their dreams and see beyond. They will have a very essential impact to student’s life in pursuing to be the best version of themselves. To be able to transform schools and education, great teachers are in need. So, from all that I have learned in this episode, I will always try my best to be a great teacher someday. I will strive to have not only a great mind but also a great heart who will always be considerate to the needs and interests of my future students. I will open my mind to share all the knowledge and skills I have, open my ears to listen in the struggles in class, open my eyes to see their capabilities and open my mouth to remind them of their calling.
