So how has it step together programme been?
Unknown 0:32
The step together has got off to a fly start and i feel its been amazing seeing how much impact the purple jackets have on the streets of Newtown, Aston and Jewellery quarter. It's been good to see the engagment we have been getting from young people and the encouragement and uplift that they look forward to when they see our members of staff. Over the last few months its been important that we have played a vital part in keeping them safe and supporting the schools with the after school time, and how much the schools respect us and have developed a partnership in making the first stage of this pilot a success and I've done anything they could possibly do to help support us in any way they can. Unknown 1:07
Even though this is a pilot before the pilot, i feel we have gathered good ground and now we have a foundation, it's time to start really building and pushing forward over the next few months. Unknown 1:16
Here are some of the case studies of situations that's happened while on the step together programme and why I think our impact intial impact has been successful. Unknown 1:34
Our first situation is where, some the young people's relationship with stuff from the schools has been broken and the young people felt that they're not being heard. Our staff has been able to talk to teachers and be a mediatior and support the young people as much as possible to get their voices heard and their point of view across in a manor which feel like they matter. Unknown 1:56
Our staff have done a good job of encouraging young people after school and making them feel safe and supported and helping in any way possible.
Unknown 2:06
There's been cases where our staff members have:
Unknown 2:08
- Stopped fights between students vs students.- Supported teachers when members of the public attack teachers.- Supported young people on the bus when bus drivers didnt want to let them on, or stop the bus or they don't have money to get on. - Supported young person by droppoing them home safely to make sure that they don't get on bus with student they had just had a fight with to prevent further risk on the bus. - provide food for young people that may be hungry at the bus stop. -Rebuild relationship between young people and local businesses. and even been a situation where a young person got hit by a car, And then the driver tried to drive away and our guys were standing the road, stopped and escorted the driver to the side so he we could get his details and give it back to the school. Unknown 2:40
There has also been situations where our staff witnessed a group of guys come to the school in ski masks, which we was able to be a deterrent for any problems that may or could have occurred if our staff wasnt there. - there has also been situations where our staff have stopped potential problems when a group of boys came down to school and stopping some of the students and was questioning them or antagonising them to spark a respond so that they could end up in a fight. our staff was there to support to amke sure that didn't happen and when this group in question seen our staff team they flee and the boy was able to go home. Unknown 3:31
This is why I feel like our guys have made a brilliant impact over this term and looking forward to see what next year brings.
Unknown 4:15
Our after activities have been interesting. Wherever it's just speaking to them after school, doing boxing sessions with them, encouraging them, playing games with them at the bus stop to make sure that they're engaged, giving them words of encouragement.
Unknown 4:38
We have also taken a group of young people which holte school identified as being problematic and hard to engage to saquibs after school and had a nice open honest coversation about school, life, relationships and money and just general encouragement. Unknown 4:54
On another day, We also played a game of basket ball with them and utilised there leadership skills to bring out their talent and encourage them to use that same talent and skills in other areas of there life.
Unknown 5:02
Next year our focus is to do more after school work because there's a big request for it and they want much more. So our aim is to get first class Fridays started and initiated. Get the Dear youngers forum initiated and set up so we can start refering young people over. As they need to go after school, where they can touch base and be with other like minded young people that want to progress and move forward. Unknown 5:32
Schools Unknown 5:29
JQa we've had the best response they can't imagine a day without the purple jackets. We've been so supportive with them and they've also gave us feedback on how we've been. I think the young people get along with our stuff and we've created a good support system where they feel supported and encouraged. My personal concerns at this school is the safety on the road after school, which when they step out on the road, they're potentially in a very dangerous position where they're in the middle of road or cars are coming down. But there's not that much a school coming to do about that it's
Unknown 6:13
more of local government as their have said it would take a young people to get hit by a car and killed before they can impliment change. the last problem is the buses, how frequently the bus comes, because of the bus coming late it means the young people have to stay at the bus stop for longer and the longer their are there the more risks we have and more disturption to businesses.
Unknown 6:37
Some of the young people still stay regardless because their friends are there or their friends might have detentions but overall aslong as the buses come on time, the kids tend to clear out pretty quickly. Unknown 6:52
What we didn't notice for a period of time with that the young people will stay in longer because we was there, and I think they kind of liked the fact that like a little after school club, but what we don't do is we set a time where we would say we would go in and then they tend to go around that time anyway. Unknown 7:13
Holte has been interesting. We've built up quite a good rapport at the school. The young people love giving us high fives the teachers have been congraluting us how the young have gravitated towards us and show us so much love and respect. Unknown 7:30
It's been interesting to see how some of the the classified by the school as troublsum and problematic young people have engaged and opened up to us, and have come to us in times where they feel like they needed support or for when they feel like their are not being heard. Unknown 7:50
The only concern we can see at the moment is the teacher and young people relationship because I feel like along the way, the relationship has been broken. After speaking with young people, It feels like there's no connection between the two. young people have said it feels there no real point of contact and unless their getting in trouble or there's something important needs to be said, There's no real coversation between them. Unknown 8:17
But every school is different and every school responds differently but I think that probably my own concerns. The postway has been pretty quiet compared to how it was explained but some situations does happen there. One of the situations where one of our staff handled. which was One of the young girls, older brother came down to the school for some boys that were bothering his sister. Our stuff spoke with the brother handled it in a way the brother felt supported and our staff seen if there was anything that they could have done in a professional manner and made a brother feel at ease that his little sister was not getting bullied or in any further problems. Also little fights where I stuff has supported the young people to prevent further fights from happening and we have had other students come down from other people referral units or schools come down and linger but because of our staff has prior to this program have built rappor with some of the kids that have come down, the potential for risk has been low.
Unknown 9:47
Nishkam has been quite quiet. There's not much real observations with it. the afterschool opperation the school run is smooth and kids ten to go straight home. there has been one problem after school in the whole of our time being there and that was handled by there communtiy officer. They're also happy to see us but is not really needed as much as the rest of the room.
Unknown 10:05
For aston manor. has been really good starting with this school. we are glad to be able to support them as this came onto the program late but school has been ultra supportive and the response from young people has been amazing but we still need more time to see what its really like
